When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

The Walnut tree

The Walnut is a sacred tree to Juno, a Goddess to whom the month of June in dedicated.

According to the Roman tradition, walnuts were thrown and donated to the spouses after the ceremony of the wedding as symbolic link with Juno: furthermore, as the fruit is protected by a woody shell, this also represents the protection of Juno on the family.

Like all trees, even walnut is an "inhabited" living being: its nymph is Caria (Kar or Ker ) who gives the sacred name to this tree. From the name of the nymph Kar or Ker comes the Latin term Kerebellum (brain) also for the resemblance of the walnut fruit with the brain according to the Science of Correspondence. Walnut is used in fact for its beneficial properties especially for the brain. The kernel, because of its resemblance to the brain, is sacred to Minerva while the shell is sacred to Janus for resemblance to a boat.

Ker, Kar, Caria is also connected with Carmenta beacuse the walnut is an oracle tree: at a walnut  healers, shamans, and seers went to have inspiration, visions and prophecies. Moreover, walnut, thanks to this connection with Carmenta, is one of the fundamental trees at the base of the sacred alphabet and calendar.

This tree is linked also to the Great Mother: it represents life and death, light and darkness.

For all these reasons, especially because of its connection with these female Deities and Sacred Forces, Christianity has linked walnut to Satan, to sabers and witches.

The willow

Role and value of the plants and trees in the Traditional Roman Spirituality are surely well known: the fig tree, the vine, oak, fir, cypress, etc ...

There are some trees having an equally important role, but perhaps less highlighted, as in the case of the willow.

It is important to say and remark that, when discussing about value and role of trees and plants (especially in an Arval sense), I want to highlight their symbolic role and value as natural expressions of specific divine forces and energies. This does not involve a reduction of this symbology into a "naturalistic" dimension, but rather the possibility to understand the Nature, the World, the Universe, as manifestations of reality much more complex than those deriving from the mere "phenomenal" perspective.

We can therefore look at the Nature as a "Book" whose reading requires the knowledge of an alphabet and a syntax. Trees and plants, as sacred expressions, are therefore an integral part of this alphabet and syntax: their symbolic knowledge allows us to read and understand this "book" of the Nature according to a vision and a point of view very different from the sole perspective of science.

This is a way also to give the proper dignity and respect to the trees as foundamental expressions of the Nature: they are not objects or "accessories" of the landscape, but the critical elements with their own individuality and their specificity.

That said, I come back to make brief remarks about the willow. This plant (vimen in Latin) was so important that a hill in Rome (Viminalis) was entirely covered with willows and this tree remains symbolically linked to this Hill in the sacred geography of Rome.

The willow is a tree strictly connected to the Moon (feminine polarity): it is important to remind that to say all the trees are expressions of the Sacred Feminine Force. In the Hortus Arvalis the willow is in fact in the flowerbed dedicated to the Moon.

Moreover, the willow also has connections with the underworld in particular Proserpina: for this aspect is considered an  infelix tree.

Being an infelix and "Lunar" tree,  the willow is a very complex tree in symbolic terms: this symbolism, with the advent of monotheism, was completely upset and misunderstood. Due to this complexity, I'll make just few brief considerations.

The willow tree is considered symbolically situated "between life and death": touching the leaves of the willow tree symbolically represents a form of contact with the underworld forces in particular with Proserpina. A willow wood is therefore a sanctuary dedicated to this Goddess and the Moon.

The willow is also connected to the water as expression of the feminine generating force.

The image of the wicker basket floating on the water (the feminine principle of life) is common to many traditions to highlight the role of this plant to act as a "vehicle" between life and death.

This position between these two worlds could explain the invocation of Jupiter Elicius (Helike = willow in greek) made by the gladiators before fighting in the arena.

In the symbolism of the hand, the willow is located on the tip of the ring finger (called wand of willow): it has power of divination. This magical and divination power Willow explains why Jupiter Elicius was invoked also during the rites of the Evocatio to discover the secret names of the Gods and Goddesses of the enemies.

Being the Dryad the spirit (nymph) of the oak, being melia the nymph of the ash, Heliconia is the nymph of the willow.

The brooms the Vestals used for their purification rites presented ropes wicker because related to the Moon.

From the willow cortex, in the past doctors produced healing extracts to lower fewers and fight pain and headaches. Today salicylic acid is extracted from the willow to produce aspirin.

Symbolically the mandrake grew at the foot of the willow.

The links connecting the willow with the Moon, the Underworld, the Feminine Force, transformed this tree during the Christian Middle Age this tree in an Evil tree (like in the case of the walnut tree sacred to Juno) used by the witches for their spells or magic wands. According to some writers the English words witch and wicked derive from wicker (willow). In addition, the brooms of the Vestals, with the wicker strings, became the evil witches brooms, with the same wicker strings. The symbolic link between the mandrake and willow contributed to amplify the connections between this tree, the witches and the devil.
The plant was then charged with negative, funeral, witchcraft and satanic values also because the healers (they were mostly women with a great knowledge of the antique medicine and the secrets of the herbs and plants) used extracts from the willow frequently to prepare their remedies.

This was enough to push the willow and the women healers in the dimension of the Evil.

The Flowerbed of Saturn

The Flowerbed of Saturn is another important component of the Sacred Garden and for the Hortus Arvalis.

Saturn is connected to a cold and dry energy. In the human body the energy of Saturn is located in the skeleton, nails, teeth, joints.

In the plant world the energy of Saturn is primarily placed in the roots of herbs, plants and trees.

In thw flowerbed of Saturn are placed many solanaceae poisonous plants such as mandrake, stramonium, hellebore, aconite, hemlock. There are also some sedative and analgesic plants such as the "devil's claw", hemp, amaranth.

The tree sacred to Saturn is by definition the willow.

The Cypress

The Cypress is an infelix tree, connected to the underworld deities Pluto and Proserpina and subjected to the influence of Saturn. Because of its shape, it is mainly linked to Pluto (Jupiter of the Underworld: The richest of all the Gods): this God, who traditionally does not have an anthropomorphic representation, is manifested symbolically in the form of a cypress.

Being permeated by this God, who, like all the underground Deities, is connected to the natural cycle of life/death, the cypress trees were always planted in groves around temples: eradicating a cypress symbolically is therefore an act of sacrilege against Pluto.

For the same reason (the cycle of life/death of Nature), the cypress trees are planted around the vineyardsi, cultivated fields, the borders between fields. Its wood is considered sacred and imperishable: the scepter of Jupiter or the club of Hercules are symbolically made of cypress wood.

The cypress expresses Despair and Inconsolable Sorrow. Symbolically, according to tradition being a plant related to Death, it allows to "walk on water" (death is placed above the Life-water), to remain in the abyss and be invisible. This tree is also used for some of the so-called remedies "Purple Via" (purple is the color of Pluto representing the light in darkness) and preparation of incenses and smokes.

His ritual name is Cyparissus

Hortus Arvalis: the Jupiter's Flowerbed

The Jutiper's Flowerbed (September is dedicated to this God) is a relevant component of the Hortus Arvalis. This flowerbed includes many corroborating, detoxifying and sedative herbs and plants such as:

  • sage
  • white henbane (different from the black henbane sacred to Apollo)
  • juniper
  • balm
  • lavender
  • chicory
  • potentilla
  • hyssop
  • dandelion
  • oleander

It is important to note that the Linden (sacred name Philyra) is a sacred tree to Jupiter.

Nymphs, Spirits of the Trees, Fairies

When walking in a forest, in silence and solitude, one can feel that the trees are whispering and murmuring. According to the Tradition, trees are not mere objects, immobile component of the landscape, simple expressions of the plant kingdom: they are rather Living entities, they are "Beings". They are moreover "inhabited": they effectively whisper and murmur.

Trees, with no exception, are expressions of a Deity, usually a Goddess (but not always...). We are in June now, so I remind that the Oak is a tree sacred to Juno (even before a tree sacred to Jupiter) as well as the walnut, the nut tree and the almond tree. In the past, before a  marriage, nuts, almonds and walnuts were offered as symbols of fecundity and solidity of the future family.

The spirit of the Oak is a Driad: every oak has her own driad distinguishing each oak from another oak like every man has his own Genius and every woman has her own Juno. These spirits of the trees are also identified as Nymphs and, having a remarkable generating force, are always expression of the feminine energy. This is the reason why trees in the Latin language, have always a feminine gender.

The popular folklore has then transformed these Nymphs into Fairies. Every trees has therefore a spirit, a Nymph, a Fairy: the presence of such Fairies is not aimed to populate the fairytales for children but rather granting and preserving the identity of every tree, their dignity as noble expressions of the Force of the Nature.

Here I include as an example a short list of names of some Fairies linked to important sacred trees.
  • Driad: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Oak
  • Melia: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Ash
  • Maelia: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Pomegranate
  • Cariatide: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Nut tree
  • Eliconia: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Willow

Marica

Some days ago, as usual, I went to the forest in the hills around my house to make the legnaticum

I have made a long walk with my baculum (I left my car in the garage any time I can: I prefer to walk whenever I can): I went through the forest to pick dead branches the trees leave on the ground. With these branches I make some bundles I use during winter at home for my fireplace.

As usual, while walking inside the forest, my thoughts  were directed to those Goddesses giving life to these so particular places. First of all Diana: then I invoked Marica in order to be able to make my legnaticum in harmony with the trees and the forest in that moment were hosting me (we are always guests in any sacred place) giving me the possibility to make the legnaticum.

Marica is "the Lady of the Forests", an Italic potnia (maybe with origins in Sabinia): she was very well-known and respected in the past in the countryside in Central Italy. This Goddess had a lucus near Minturno, but all the forests (in particular the moist and swampy forests) are sacred to Marica (mara = swamp).  Marica moreover gives life to the wild plants and grass in the forests giving to these plants their peculiar properties.

Marica also protects the newborns (Bona Dea)

Marica, sometimes also assimilated to Circe, symbolically gives life, support and help but in the sametime she can give Death: she transfers these characteristics to the wild plants. It is thus important for the Arvales to have a deep knowledge about Marica and the properties of the wild plants and herbs.

She is the sacralization of these places scarcely contaminated by the human presence. She is the Lady of the "Nobody's Land".

I have written this brief invocation, to be used before entering a forest, using contributions from Callimachus and the Orphic Hymn to Artemis.

You rarely go into town
Marica

You live in the mountains, visiting
the cities of humans, only when women
struck with painful labor, call to you for aid

Wild, infera, you kill the beasts with the happy destiny

You occupy the forests in the mountains, hurt the deer, augusta
I recognize you as queen of these places
always wild

Marica

Discendi raramente
Marica in città.

La tua dimora
sono i monti e le città
frequenti solo quando
in aiuto ti chiamano le donne
morse

sempre silvestre

Pluto and Proserpina

I would like to dedicate this post to analyze, even if briefly, role and meaning of a very important Divine Force structured into two polarities: the male (Pluto) and the female (Proserpina) polarity.

Probably these are the best known infernal polarities but too often they are quite equivocated also under the influence of many monoteist prejudices. It is important to remind that the Idea of Inferi, according to the Traditional Roman Spirituality, is completely different from the idea of Hell of the monoteism (under many points of view they are rather anthitetical).

"Nothing can last forever: without the Death, there's no Life": this sentence exemplifies the cycle of the existence and the essence of the Inferi as place of Death and Life generation. Similarly Pluto and Proserpina embrace elements of Life and Death.

Tradition indicates that Proserpina is a force related to seeds: Pluto is "Sun proceeding underground: he visits the invisible world during the winter solstice" (Porphiry, Peri Agàlmaton).

Proserpina has a complex symbolism linked to the buds' cropping out: from this reason she has two horns and the female appearance evidencing her generating force. Proserpina is the force at the base of the seeds' growth (she is Ceres' daughter).

She wears a crown made of ears of wheat (basic food for mankind): she is surrounded by poppies (symbol of the Earth). Poppy is symbol of married love and fecundity. Poppy is an infernal plant because it is the symbol of sleep and death.

The myth of Proserpina represents the alternating of the seasonal cycles on Earth and all the processes of "rebirth" (palingenesis)

Pluto is represented by the helm (as representation of the invisible world and invisibility) and by a half-scepter. The lack of the scepter's peak is the symbol of his sovereignty on the Inferi World (The Under-World), the lack of the "Above": his autority is not related to the "Above". He wears a purple cover: purple is the colour of the Underworld representing light descending underground. Pluto has the scepter in his left hand and in his right hand he holds a horn of plenty (Richness), or a Key (Initiation symbol as well as symbol of the control of the Underworld).

Cerberus, the Pluto/Proserpina dog, has three heads to evidencing the three phases in the existence formation: seeding, receiving and growth. He also represents the three main sky regions: East, South and West. Pluto, sometimes standig up or sitting on a throne, keeps his right hand over the Cerberus' heads to remark his total control.

Black animals, snakes and cypress are sacred to Pluto/Proserpina, but the tree highly representing Pluto/Proserpina is the pomegranate whose fruit, which can be harvested in October and November, remarks the "link" with the Underworld.

The pomegranate is the symbol of the "link", above all the "Blood Link": this fruit is the symbol also of fecundity, richness, abundance. In addition the pomegranate represents the "rebirth" and initiation.

Richness and abundance in agriculture depends on the Pluto's Force. But, as already mentioned, Pluto and Proserpina embody also the Power of the Death without which it is not possible to generate new life. Pluto and Proserpina are therefore destroyng and creating forces in the same time. After all the palingenesis is impossible without the involvement of a preliminary "death" as precondtion of the complete abandoning of the profane existence. Being at the base of the Mysteries of Eleusis, the greater part of the symbolism and rituals of Proserpina and Pluto was (and still is) secret and it is not licit to talk about them extensively.
Pluto and Proserpina can be invoked beating the hands over the ground.

In the ancient Rome Pluto and Proserpina had a specific underground Temple in the Tarentum (or Terentum).

Plutone e Proserpina

Liber/Libera

March 17 is a day dedicated to Liber/Libera with the festivities of Liberalia

In this post I do not want to describe the characteristics of this public cult in the past (at present very difficult to perform in its original expression): I'd rather prefer to provide some brief consideration useful (I hope) both for an eventual private cult and for the understanding of some related implications and meanings which can help us to maintain our personal status of "awakening" and "awareness".

Liber and Libera  are fecundity natural forces (not accidentally cited during this month dedicated to fecundanting Mars), above all a fecundity linked to wild Nature particularly active in the forests; they are mainly active during the transition or passage periods such as Spring and Autumn.

Liber in particular is the trees' cortex, above all the cortex richer of life and sap connecting the leaves to the roots.  Liber/Libera are "Deities of the Sap", "The plants' blood". They are underground forces (included in the triad Ceres-Liber-Libera) which every spring emerge from the ground to resuscitate plants and trees.

They are symbolized by the Ivy, a plant  living drawing sap from trees.

Thanks ot these forces, trees can be covered by leaves and then by flowers. Liber/Libera are forces of the Sap, pollen and nectar as well as any kind of lymph: for men and women, Liber/Libera are linked to the maturity of sex organs and the related fluids as tools to animate Nature

We can use this Ode by Horace as invocation to Liber/Libera

Bacchus on the far-off rocky hills, teaching
his chants -- you who are still to come, believe me --
I saw him and his student Nymphs and
goat-footed Satyrs and their pointed ears.
Euhoë! -- my soul trembles with that moment's fear,
Bacchus possesses my breast and I madly
rejoice. Euhoë!, spare me, Liber,
spare me, god of the fearful rod of power.

I must celebrate your inexhaustible
revelers, and the fountains of wine and full
rivers of milk, and mirror in song
honey dripping from the hollows of trees...

Horace, Ode 2.19

Liber/Libera

risparmiami, temibile col tuo potente tirso.
Ora solo mi è lecito cantare
le Tiadi infaticabili,
di vino le sorgenti ed i ruscelli
straripanti di latte
e raccontare come il miele scorre
fuori dai cavi tronchi..
Orazio, Odi, 2/19
