When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

April: Generation

During this period of the year, between March and April, the Nature is in a phase of great activity related to generation and re-generation. The month of March in particular is dedicated to  the male generating power linked to Mars, while April is a period dedicated to the sacred feminine generating force connected to Venus.

It is important to highlight value and meaning of generation expressed by Venus, because these aspects represent a distinctive element of the Traditional Roman Spirituality as well as for the Traditional Spirituality as a whole.

In order to understand this peculiarity it is important to remind that monotheism depicts a god, alone, creating and separating the elements, giving shape to the universe and modeling a man (not a woman...) with his hands. Monotheism therefore implies a substantial distance, an unbridgeable difference between the creator god and his creatures. God, Nature and humanity are totally separated entities having nothing in common (in the past, in the present and in the future).

In the Traditional Roman Spirituality creation is linked to a generation process highly depending on an act of Love. Everything springs from an Union of Love between a God and a Goddess which are both involved in generation: we have the same for all the beings of the Nature and thus for humanity. The Divine, the Nature and the Mankind are united by this feature, by this force that attracts and binds all the Beings. This force, attracting and binding, is sacralized in the figure of Venus: this force keeps locked together the male and the feminine polarities, as different components of a single whole Entity in all things (see the yin-yang) becoming the precondition of every union of Love,

Love is such a powerful force to render Death a key component of generation. This meaning explains the definition of Venus as Mors et Vita origo.

This splendid Etruscan sarcophagus, more than any other explanation, symbolically describes the power of this force, this bond of love that unites the male and the feminine polarities "embraced" (as in yin-yang) as a precondition for the re-birth and re generation from death.

Moreover, being a common aspect to all "existing realities", this force of Love makes reality "permeable": the Divine, Nature and Humanity are not separated and distinct entities.

This common vital energy, that pervades the universe, renders Gods and Goddesses close to and present in men and women and viceversa. Similarly Nature becomes part of us and we are part of the Nature. The Divine lives within us and within the Nature and the Nature and humanity are similarly present in the Divine

Aprile: generazione

Incense

Burning incense is probably the most "pagan" gesture  imaginable.
Incense is a resin derived from various plants mainly from the Boswellia. This plant, like other plants which produce incense, are located in the flowerbed of the Sun in the Arval Garden (Hortus) .

Burning incense is considered an offer to the Gods and Goddesses: formerly also represented an act of devotion towards the authority and sacredness of the figure of the Emperor.

Burning incense is an act with a high and complex symbolic sacred value for domestic cults. It is a typical example of "dissipation with fire": therefore, this act can be considered a real sacrifice.

The use of incense in the sacrificial household rites shows several implications. Burning incense in fact causes the generation of a dense visible smoke and pronounced perfume.

Without citing very complex details, I think it could be useful to reflect on the idea of the "smoke" and "perfume" (per-fume) related to the use of incense. Two senses in particular are involved in this act: the sight and olfaction

Incense smoke rising into the sky is primarily an elevation, an act of transcendence, a moment of connection between the human and the Celestial Deities' dimension: between Earth and Heaven. In essence, the act of burning incense with the production of a small column of perfumed smoke is materially depicts a form of "axis" along which it realizes an ascending movement. The spirals of smoke, also represented by the symbol of the spiral column, represent an expression of indirect ascension to heaven, similar to a spiral staircase or a snake: this smoke spiral thus draws symbolically a passage through the hierarchy of the various states of the Being or the representation of the degrees of Universal Existence.

The spirals of smoke from incense are released into the air and fly to the sky. This flight of smoking represents the re-union with the Divine Dimension (both for the living beings and in funeral rites) and the flight itself symbolizes the "freedom of movement", the liberation from the material sphere, the transcendence of the world or the spiritual condition.

As previously mentioned, burning incense produces a per-fume. All perfumes are econmpassed into the sphere sacred to Venus. In particular, the smell produced by incense materializes a feeling of "attractive" and seduction force intended to capture the benevolence of the divine energy: it requires an act of "divine courtesy" or the divine venia.

I will not say any more, but these brief remarks I hope can be considered as a small contribution to maintain, in a Cultor and a Cultrix, an attitude of consciousness and awakening  also in case of apparently simple and obviousl gestures as burning incense, but capable to hide complex values and symbolic meanings.

Incenso

Venerari - Veneratio

Considering that the month of April is dedicated to Venus, I think it may be useful to make some reflections about the verb "venerari" and the term "veneratio".

It is quite obvious the etymological connection linking somehow these two terms to Venus. As for other Latin words (eg. Devotio, Evocatio, felix, sinister, etc.), these two words have now acquired a totally profane meaning also following the process of continuous profanation in modern languages (not coincidentally defined as "vulgar" )

The veneratio, as well as the act of venerari, is an attitude of the Cultor and the Cultrix towards the Gods and Goddesses connected to the pietas. Unlike the pietas, the veneratio is not based on a relationship of fides and do-ut-des but rather on a feeling capable to capturing, captivating the benevolence, a positive approach to the divine power. So this is not an equal exchange, but it requires an act of "divine courtesy" or the divine venia.

The veneratio implies a sincere attitude and a particular disposition of spirit as to arouse a gesture of love by the divine power. In this sense the veneratio is inspired by Venus. The involvement of Venus, as powerful, fascinating and attractive force of Love, would be likely to make veneratio and the act of venerari (applying certain theurgical techniques - unknown to me), a so powerful and seductive formula to create a force to which the involved divine energy can not resist.

In this sense the veneratio may become not only an invocation inspired by Love to/from the Divine, but also a very powerful magic formula capable to consequently generate a venenum or a charm similar to that exercised by women towards men. The venenum aroused by veneratio and venerari therefore can become similar, in theurgic and magic terms, to fascinum. But while the venenum is a religious expression and captivating love, the fascinum has a definitively negative value because it looks like a magic formula of curse.

In short, a distinction of a not scondary importance.

Venerari - Veneratio

April - Venus

April is a month enterely dedicated to the Nature and to the Nature's Beauty. Many Goddesses are celebrated during this month, above all Venus.

Venus is a very complex and difficult Divne Force: some additional details can be found in this post and in this post.

Venus is the sacralization of Beauty: in particular she is "The Revealed and Disclosed Beauty".

Her sacred trees and plants are: cherry tree, myrtle, daisy, rose, lime and apple tree.
Her sacred animals are: stork, sparrow, frog, dolphin, swan, hare, turtle and dove.

A Venus' fundamental symbol is the shell.

Venus is also identified as:
  • Venere Pandemia: physical love
  • Venere Urania: spiritual love
  • Venere Murcia: she-mitigating
  • Venere Verticordia: passion

Venus is symbolized by a cone dark stone.

Other important Gods/Goddesses celebrated in April are:
  • Ceres: "the nuorishing land". She is also named "Flavia" (blonde, clear), "frugifera" (giving fruits), she is the sacred symbol of corn cultivation. Spike, poppy, pig and heifer are sacred to Ceres.
  • Tellus: the Earth, symbol of stability and solidity (Tellus Stabilita), she-generating energy. She is represented surrounded by children. Sacred animal: veal
  • Pale: ancient Goddess of pastures and herds.
  • Robigo: "Rust". Negative God provoking inactivity and many plant, animal and human deseases.
  • Flora: Goddess of Flowers. She is the symbol of spring. Seeds and honey are sacred to Flora. She is represented by a wicker basket full of flowers she will put on trees.
______

It is possible to provide some brief and simple considerations about a deeper meaning and sense of the cult and symbology of Venus.

Venus represents the Generating Force hidden inside the Nature, in particular the generating and purificating force of Water. It is important ot note that the letter "V" as initial of her name and the symbol of Venus are linked to the hermetic symbol of Water however connected to the feminine sexuality. The purificating power of Water-Venus is also evidenced by the Goddess' nudity: I will discuss this complex topic in another post.

Venus contains in the same time Life and Death: she is defined also "mortis et vitae locus".
Venus symbolizes, in hermetic terms, the passivity, contraction, the Original Primigenial Force, the "Wet Path", "the Green Path", copper, sexuality, the lumbar region.

Venus is also somehow linked to the secret name of Rome.

 The roman grafito in Pompeii

The importance of the cult of Venus in Rome is extremely well known and the realtion between the name of Rome and Venus is also evidenced by the famous grafito in Pompeii.

Aprile - Venere

Venere viene indentificata come:
  • Venere Pandemia: amore fisico
  • Venere Urania: amore spirituale

Hortus Arvalis: the Venus' Flowerbed

We are in Spring time and  now we can devote ourselves to the preparation of our garden. In particular, being April dedicated to Venus, in this post I would like to make some considerations about the section of the garden dedicated to this Goddess, as critical component of the Hortus Arvalis (Arval Garden)

First of all, I think that it could be useful to provide some brief detail about the Hortus Arvalis. An Arval Garden is the place where the Arval Knowledge in embodied in botanical and Theobotanical terms. Its structure and organization should depict the harmony between the Nature, in her deeper essence, and the human spirit. This can achieved through the symbolic knowledge of the herbs and plants the garden includes, their placement and the sacred geometry the Garden represents as place of contact between the macrocosm and microcosm dimensions. In brief, the Hortus Arvalis is a sort of "Green Book" written with the symbols, letters and grammar of the Tradition where the Three Worlds (Inferi, Surface, Sky) can find the description of their communication and harmony.

Every plant and herb, through its placement within a precise sacred geometry, thus becomes a tool capable to catalyze benefits and energies deriving fom the contact and harmony between these worlds.

Being expression of the generating force of the Earth, the Arval Garden has a squared or rectangular shape: it will be divided into four main sectors whose division can be made with two lanes intersecting at the centre. In this way, the four main elements (water, air, fire, earth) are represented and the fifth element (quintessence) is placed in the middle as axial point.

I can just remind that the antique roman domus surrounded a hortus showing these characteristics with at the centre water as generating element (life) and axial-contact point with the Sky (water is simbolically an infernal element but this case involves the Rain, as water falling from the Sky). This tradition has been copied, maintained and used in the Middle Age in the cloisters with a well as axial point and contact between the inferi, the surface and the sky. In the Reinassance this tradition was at the base of the great hermetic, symbolic and botanic gardens.

The Sacred Geometry at the base of the Arval Garden is symbolically aimed to evidence and streghten the (more or less occult) properties of plants and herbs under the influence of the Divine Forces connected to them, the Sacred Astrology and the underworld providing nourishment to plants and herbs.

The Arval Garden represents therefore the link between planets, metals, plants, Deities, numbers, colors and musical notes. It should have the power to stimluate all the senses: in this way it become a perfect place to practice otium and spiritual purification. The Arval Garden usually includes the "Simples", or those herbs capable, without other ingredients, to produce effects: these herbs can be eaten, used for infusions, compresses, essences, pomades.

Every herb and plant is connected to a Divine Force according a precise correspondence: from these Deities the plants receive some signs, prints, symbols (Doctrine of Signatures) and above all characteristics, qualities, positive (or negative) properties, influences. Any part of the plant, like the human body, is consacrated to a specific Deity: Saturn-roots, Mercury-seeds and bark, Mars-stem and trunk, Pomona/Jupiter-fruits, Moon-leaves, Venus/Flora-flowers.

The Arval Garden is structured into four main sections, which may be divided in further sub-areas. These sub-sections may show particular geometrical shapes on the base of the principles of Geomancy, a divination science through the esoteric value of the geometric shapes and spaces where placing plants, herbs and flowers in order to obtain the better qualities and properties from them.

It is important to note that the bordering of the flowerbeds have a foundamentally symbolic value rather than an aesthetic one because, according to the Tradition, the plants used for the bordering must have the capabilities to avoid the dispersion of the properties of the plants included in the flowerbed

One of the four main sections in the Arval Garden is the Venus' Flowerbed. It should include:  oregano, mint, verbena, alchemilla, prunella, artemisia, pomegranate, venus hair fern, moss, myrtle, columbine, orange, heather, violet, rose.

The perfumed herbs and those plants used for cosmetics are sacred to Venus, a Divine Force at the base of the essences, fragrances and perfumes.

This topic is rather long and I don't want to involve the reader in long and boring discussions. Anyway, it is important to do some remarks as conclusion for this post.
First of all, having even a minimal knowledge about the symbolic value of the plants, trees, flowers, and herbs included in an Arval Garden can contribute to regain a new respect for trees and plants understanding in the same time, the complex symbolic value of plants and gardens (also those in the medieval cloisters and the botanical gardens of the reinassance). It is important to understand that these places have a symbolic, religious and spiritual value before the aesthetic one. They are the representation of a particular vision of the Nature, the World and the Universe through a Traditional Language which often has been lost.

Moreover, I would like to evidence that everyone of us can make his/her own Arval Garden because not always it requires great space and high botanical skills. Everyone can make it also in a small scale. Taking care of these plants in an Arval Garden can be a way not only to produce our food, spices and essences through an useful physical activity, but also to gain personal peace and harmony. In brief physical and psychological wellness.
