When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

April - Venus

April is a month enterely dedicated to Nature and to Nature's Beauty. Many Goddesses are celebrated during this month above all Venus.

Venus is the sacralization of Beauty: in particular she is "The Revealed and Disclosed Beauty".
Her sacred trees are: cherry tree, myrtle, daisy, rose, lime and apple tree.
Her sacred animals are: stork, sparrow, frog, dolphin, swan, hare, turtle and dove.

A Venus' fundamental symbol is the shell.

Venus is also identified as:
  • Venere Pandemia: physical love
  • Venere Urania: spiritual love
  • Venere Murcia: she-mitigating
  • Venere Verticordia: passion

Venus is symbolized by a cone dark stone.

Other important Gods/Goddesses celebrated in April are:
  • Ceres: "the nuorishing land". She is also named "Flavia" (blonde, clear), "frugifera" (giving fruits), she is the sacred symbol of corn cultivation. Spike, poppy, pig and heifer are sacred to Ceres.
  • Tellus: the Earth, symbol of stability and solidity (Tellus Stabilita), she-generating energy. She is represented surrounded by children. Sacred animal: veal
  • Pale: ancient Goddess of pastures and herds.
  • Robigo: "Rust". Negative God provoking inactivity and many plant, animal and human deseases.
  • Flora: Goddess of Flowers. She is the symbol of spring. Seeds and honey are sacred to Flora. She is represented by a wicker basket full of flowers she will put on trees.
______

It is possible to provide some brief and simple citations about a deeper meaning and sense of the cult and symbology of Venus.

Venus represents the Generating Force hidden inside Nature, in particular the generating and purificating force of Water. It is important ot note that the letter "V" as initial of her name and the symbol of Venus are linked to the hermetic symbol of Water however connected to the feminine sexuality. The purificating power of Water-Venus is also evidenced by the Goddess' nudity: I will discuss this complex topic in another post.

Venus contains in the same time Life and Death: she is defined also "mortis et vitae locus".
Venus symbolizes, in hermetic terms, the passivity, contraction, the Original Primigenial Force, the "Wet Path", "the Green Path", copper, sexuality, the lumbar region.

Venus is also somehow linked to the secret name of Rome.

 The roman grafito in Pompeii

The importance of the cult of Venus in Rome is extremely well known and the realtion between the name of Rome and Venus is also evidenced by the famous grafito in Pompeii.

Aprile - Venere

Venere viene indentificata come:
  • Venere Pandemia: amore fisico
  • Venere Urania: amore spirituale

October 13th: Fontinalia

On October 13th the ancient festivity of Fontinalia is celebrated. This festivity is dedicated to Fons/Fontus (son of Janus) and it is linked to springs and wells where invisible waters become visible. Springs, fountains and wells are decorated with wreaths and flowers are put in the rivers.

It is important to note the use of flowers to celebrate the rituals of Fontinalia: the flower is the symbol of transient beauty and impermanence of the existence.

This festivity is however rather complex, with more profound meanings than one can expect. This festivity sacralizes a relevant aspect of water as  fons et origo, or primordial element which embraces all the potential manifestations of the existence. The fact to be also "origo" explains the relation with Janus (The Beginning).
The most relevant aspect of Fontinalia (invisible/visible waters) is thus the sacralization of an element which precedes any form and any creation. This cycle "invisible/visible" corresponds to the relation immersion/emersion: emersion is the cosmogonical act of the manifestation while immersion is a dissolution. Thus water (a regeneration element) evidences the cycle life/death.
Moreover, water, preceding creation, has its own "aquatic" symbology (i.e. the shell). Water is linked to the Female Polarity, the Moon, the Matter, the Undifferentiated Life.
Water (and its primordial features) connotes any "humid" and indefferentiated principle: it's important to note the symbology of the "Flowing Waters" and the "Iced Waters", the symbology of the "Flow" and the "Descending Principle". The cycle and the "Becoming" described by the water are linked to the complex symbolgy of Janus.

If Water is a symbol of purification, Spring Water has this feature in an even more relevant way: not only "purification" but also "salvation". This is the reason why, among others, one of the most important symbol of Janus (connected as mentioned above to Water) is a boat.

"Without the Divine Water, nothing exists" (Zosimus)

Water and Spring symbolizes also the "Travel", the "Journey" according two different but integrated perspectives: the travel following the water flowing form the spring to the Sea or proceeding against the tide from the Sea to the Spring. This case represents the imagine of the travel going back to the origins and the initiatory palingenesis. Following the tide symbolizes the imagine of the destination to achieve.

13 Ottobre: Fontinalia

"Senza l'Acqua Divina nulla esiste" (Zosimo)

Sacred Symbols: the Shell

Often the shell, also in a stylized form, appears in many roman architectonical and non architectonical representations: frequently in niches, fountains, pediments, funeral representations. It thus represents a very important sacred symbol which must be considered a relevant tool within the sacred "non linguistic" language rather than a mere decorative element. Surely profane individuals will keep on considering this symbol as a decoration but its role has to be adequately acknowledge by non-profane.
The shell is first of all a symbol linked to Marine Deities and to Water (also as hermetic principle). In this way its links to the female polarity, and consequently to the Moon (even in this case also as hermetic element) are clearly evident. The shell, emblem of the female dimension, describes a symbology connected to Love, Fertility and Generation.

This explains also the strict link between the symbology of the shell and Venus: Venus was born on a shell to highlight this principle and this cosmic force. The shell is symbol of Love, marriage, Green as sacred colour to Venus. But the shell describes not only the birth and the generation but also the re-birth and re-generation. For this reason it is shown in funeral representations to describe this re-generation and re-birth after the profane death in the Way towards the Celestial Deities. It is thus a geometric, hermetic and initiation symbol.

In those rites where it is necessary to evidence this function shells are involved: also in rites for agricultural fertility, as well as in those rites where the fertility as cosmic force is evoked, can be used the shell to highlight this symbolism. We speak also through our symbols.

Therefore the shell as sacred symbol is always involved in the most important moments of a person's life: birth, initiation, marriage, fertility and generation, fertility of the land nourishing us (Mother Earth), death.

October 12th: Fontinalia

October in the past was characterized by many important festivities: first of all the Ludi Augustales (7 - 13) and the Ludi Capitolini (15). The former were related to the Emperor Augustus become "Divus" (in a next post I will analyze the concept of "Divus" distinct from the concept of "Deus").

Ludi Capitolini were related to the chasing away of the Gauls from the Capitol. It's important to note that these festivities were celebrated with Ludi or rituals linked to the Goddess Vittoria.
The complex ritual of the celebration of the October Equus cannot be described here.

On October 10th Meditrinalia were celebrated: Meditrinalia were "curative" rituals during which new wine was used during a libatio expressing the following formula: "novum vinum libo, novo veteri morbo medeor" (I make this libatio with new wine to cure old diseases with the "new")

On October 19th Armilustrium was celebrated: swords, shields and spears were purified and closed in the Temple of Mars after the end of the military year (which begins on march the 9th).

On October 28th Isia, festivity dedicated to Isis, were celebrated.

On October 12th the ancient festivity of Fontinalia is celebrated.

The cycle and the "Becoming" described by the water are linked to the complex symbolgy of Janus.

All this is therefore what we must have in mind when celebrating the rites of Fontinalia.

12 Ottobre: Fontinalia

_________________________________

The day october 13 is dedicated to water and springs with the festivity of Fontinalia. In this day we put flowers near springs and fountains to evidence the importance to tribute to this so essential element for our life. Being water we drink and giving us life, sacred also fountains are sacred. Fons/Juturna represents the spirit, in its two male/female polarities, of the sacralization of drinking water and springs.

Fountains and springs detain also an important symbolic value because they represent a "beginning": consequently Juturna (Iuturna, Diuturna) is strctly linked to Janus (The Beginning).

It is relevant to note that springs (as loci - sites), host particular spiritual figures: the nymphs. They are the sacral representation of inner water sites. In addition water (not seawater) is linked to the figure of Neptun.
