Maia - May

May is a month dedicated to the "underground fire" of the Earth and to Mystery (what is not perceivable and unknown). In particular this month is dedicated to the Goddess Maia, an underground Goddess (ctonia) whose male polarity is Vulcan

Maia is a Magna Mater (Great Mother) and the term Maiestas derives from her name: she is defined also Stata Mater (she blocking fire).

She is also defined as "she giving shapes to all". 

I want to dedicate this comprecatio by Gellius as invocation to Maia.

Maia and Volcan are linked to two different kind of underground-inferi "heat" and "fire". Of course these "fire" and "heat" have to be interpreted as occult and super-natural fire and heat rather than physical, profane and vulgar phenomena.

In this occasion, I can provide just few details about fire and heat sacralized in the male polarity of Vulcan which are essentially Earth promordial energies capable to "ignite and empower the metals". This is an underground force thus connected to metals (in an esoteric sense) and to their symbolic properties: just think about the metallurgic myth of Vulcan (the "Blacksmith") and the symbology of the weapons he forges and shapes.

The fire and heat sacralized by Maia show different features. Even in this case, we are talking about occult, underground, hidden, infernal forces but not linked to metals: "everything depends" however on these forces. While the Vulcan's fire and heat  burn and forge, the Maia's ones do not burn and forge. This fire and this heat are subtle and mild. These are continuos interior forces. This is a fire without light. This is a heat coming from the inside propagating everywhere underground wrapping up everything like a mild fewer. It is a sensation of something perpetually and slowly burning somewhere in an occult, remote and deep place inside the Earth.

It's better to define it "tepor" (warmth), rather than "heat", feeding all the Nature: it is a warmth generated by the "Earth's Blood" moving from her Deep Heart and diffused everywhere underground through the veins and capillaries of the Earth.

This tepor is at the base of life, growth and development of all the expressions of Nature. Everything created, produced, emanated is provided with a tepor, the Maia's warmth.

It is important to remind that Great and Small are the same: the macro and micro dimensions are the same. For this reason the cosmic and Naural dimensions are similar to the human one.

We can thus find this tepor in anything provided with Life: this warmth is diffused through the body opposing to the cold status of Death. Not surpisingly any sacrifice (i.e. a libatio) involves the act of burning the offering on a fire because it makes visible this foundamental aspect of life.

This tepor, generated by a fire without light, is also an enthusiasm, a passion, a fervor. It is a warmth linked also to friendship and love ("warmly" is said in the common language). It is thus the warmth of love opposed to the cold rationality. It is the warmth of the "sacred breath" (flamen), pouring Life: it is the sensation to be alive (Genius-Juno). It is also the warmth produced by meditative and contemplation practices.

Maia is therefore a vital force irradiating in the Earth Depth as well as inside us through the blood.

Like the lava produced by a Volcano destroys everything but representing however the foundamental base for the creation of an extremely fertile field, similarly the living heat and fire of Maia can become a devastating force when too powerful.

In particolare il mese è dedicato alla Dea Maia, divinità sotterranea (ctonia) la cui polarità maschile è Vulcano.

Poichè siamo nel mese dedicato a Maia, posso ora solo accennare che il calore ed il fuoco sacralizzato nella polarità maschile di Vulcano sono energie primordiali della Terra capaci di "accendere e vitalizzare i metalli". Si tratta di energie sotterranee legate quindi ai metalli (anche qui in senso esoterico e non fisico), alle loro proprietà simboliche: basta appena accennare al mito metallurgico di Vulcano  (il forgiatore) e alla simbologia delle armi da lui costruite. 

Diverso è il fuoco ed il calore sotterraneo sacralizzato da Maia. Anche in questo caso ci troviamo di fronte a forze occulte, sotterranee, ma da cui "tutto dipende". Mentre il fuoco ed il calore di Vulcano bruciano e fondono, quello di Maia non brucia e non fonde. Si tratta di un fuoco e di un calore sottili miti, continui, interiori, in particolare è un fuoco senza luce, il fuoco ed il calore presenti all'interno, che si propagano sottoterra avvolgendo tutto come una debole febbre.  E' la sensazione di qualcosa che brucia incessantemente e lentamente da qualche parte in un luogo occulto, remoto e profondissimo all'interno della Terra. 

Più che un calore è un "tepor", un tepore che alimenta tutta la Natura: è il tepore generato dal "sangue della Terra" che parte dal suo Cuore Profondo e si diffonde sottoterra ovunque attraverso vene e capillari della Terra stessa. 

E' un tepore ed un fuoco che danno la Vita, che accrescono e che sviluppano. Tutto ciò che è creato, prodotto, emanato è dotato di "tepor", il calore di Maia.

Poichè, bisogna sempre ricordarlo, ciò che è Grande è uguale a ciò che è Piccolo, ritroviamo per analogia nel microcosmo e nella dimensione umana ciò che è presente nel macrocosmo e nella dimensione della Natura. 

Lo ritroviamo come il tepore di tutto ciò che è dotato di vita e che si diffonde su tutto il corpo contrapponendosi al freddo della morte.  Non casualmente il sacrificio (ad es. la libatio) prevede di bruciare l'offerta sul fuoco, poiché rende visibile questo fondamento della vita.

Questo tepor, che è emanato da un fuoco senza luce, è anche un entusiasmo, una passione, un fervore. E' un calore che avvolge che si lega anche all'affetto e all'amore ("calorosamente" si dice nel linguaggio comune). E' il calore quindi dell'affettività che si contrappone alla freddezza della razionalità.

 

E' il calore del "soffio sacro" (flamen) che infonde la vita, è la sensazione di essere vivi (Genius-Juno) ed anche il calore prodotto da pratiche meditative e di contemplazione.

Maia quindi è una forza vitale che si irradia nei capilari delle profondità della Terra così come all'interno di ciascuno di noi attraverso il "sangue".

Come la lava prodotta da un vulcano distrugge tutto al suo passaggio, ma rappresenta la base per la creazione di un terreno fertilissimo, allo stesso modo il calore ed il fuoco di Maia (tepor), può essere devastante, quando è troppo potente.

Traditional Symbols: the Vulcan's Hammer

With this post, I would like to add some brief reflections about the symbolism related to Vulcan. A typical symbol of this Divine Force is surely the hammer. This symbol shows a very complex value because linked to the metallurgic power of this force. The hammer is a typical expression of Vulcan as underground fire, deriving from the Celestial Fire through the thunder, capable to forge, curve and manipulate the metals.

For this reason, the hammer is firstly a symbol of the thunder as link between the Sky and the Earth: it is important to remind moreover that the myth indicates that the Jupiter's thunders are made by Vulcan with his hammer to highlight the strict and continuos relation between  Celestial Fire and Underground Fire.

The Vulcan's hammer is the tool by which this force forges the weapons for heroes. Moreover the hammer is a critical symbol wthin the Mysteries of Cabeiri of Samothrace.

The Vulcan's hammer, link between Celestial Fire and Underground Fire, shows the typical shape of Tau to evidence the ctonic symbolism of this tool. With this shape, the Vulcan's hammer describes an unitary Force expressed through a duplicity. It is a polarizing and axial tool in the handle, but having two extremities, poles, branching off from the same axis. For this reason it is very similar to the caduceus: the Vulcan's hammer has two opposite and inverse directions, two hemishperes, two opposite energies like the yin and yang in the chinese tradition.

The Vulcan's hammer has a striking and lightning power both as creating and destruction power: these are opposite implementations of the same force. It is thus symbol of Life and Death, generation and destruction, coagulation and dissolving (solve et coagula).

Simboli Tradizionali: il Martello di Vulcano

Con questo post continuo le mie riflessioni sul simbolismo di Vulcano. Un tipico simbolo di questa forza divina è certamente il martello, simbolo che detiene una valenza molto complessa perchè connessa al potere metallurgico di questa forza. Il martello è infatti una tipica espressione di questa forza divina connessa al fuoco sotterraneo, di derivazione celeste tramite il fulmine, che forgia, plasma e manipola i metalli.

In questo modo il martello è certamente uno strumento che simboleggia il fulmine ovvero il legame fra Cielo e Terra: non bisogna dimenticare poi che il mito ci dice che il fulmini di Giove sono forgiati da Vulcano con il suo martello a sottolineare ulteriormente il legame fra Fuoco Celeste e Fuoco Sotterraneo. 

Il martello di Vulcano è anche lo strumento con il quale questa forza divina forgia le armi per gli eroi. Inoltre il martello è un simbolo importantissimo nell'ambito dei Misteri dei Cabiri. 

Il martello di Vulcano, legame fra Fuoco Celeste e Fuoco Sotterraneo, ha la forma del Tau proprio per evidenziare il simbolismo ctonio di questo strumento. Con questa sua forma, il martello di Vulcano esprime una forza unitaria che si declina in una duplicità. Esso è uno strumento polarizzante ed assiale, nella sua parte del manico, ma ha due estremità, due poli, che si diramano dallo stesso asse. In questo senso è molto simile al caduceo: il martello di Vulcano presenta due poli, due correnti inverse, due emisferi, due energie opposte come nello yin e yang cinese. Esso infatti  possiede un potere folgorante sia di creazione che di distruzione: ovvero applicazioni opposte della medesima forza. Il martello di Vulcano diventa quindi simbolo di vita e di morte, produzione e distruzione, coagulazione e dissolvimento, generazione e corruzione.

Vulcan: the Metals

May is a month dedicated to Maia (feminine polarity) and to Vulcan (male polarity): about this topic I have already written some considerations here and here.

These two forces are linked to the underground fire, but, as I have wirtten in those posts, they show very relevant differences. Having already written some information about Maia, I would like to make some reflections about Vulcan (whose main festival is however celebrated in August). It is important to remind that this is a very complex Divine Force about which I will make just some brief consideration: Vulcan involves many esoteric, theurgical and alchemy aspects which cannot be discussed here also for the extreme complexity of the topic impossible to be analyzed in few words (requiring a deep esoteric knowledge and language)

I would like however to highlight that, once again, I'm discussing about a relevant expressions of a Traditional Knowledge: it is not a question of "religion", in a profane sense, or a myth, as a sort of fairtale, about an "old lame man". Vulcan represents a precise declination of the Being, the Nature, the Universe.

As already said, Vulcan describes the sacralization of the Underground Fire, a "tepor" hidden in the Deep of the Earth. Unlike Maia, Vulcan is strctly connected to the metals as secret divine concealed symbols of the Earth and the Spirit, to metallurgy (the knowledge of the metals' manipulation, forging and shaping), to the "know how".

Tradition represents Vulcan as a muscle man (The Force of Fire) wearing a dark blue hat (pileus). This is the symbol of the fact that Vulcan is an underground fire descending from the Sky, a remote Fire coming from the more remote deep parts of the Sky. Nonetheless, Vulcan is a Lame God using a wood stick as a support: this is because, even if deriving form the Celestial Fire and being generated by the Celestial Fire, the Terrestrial Fire is less intese: it depends on the Matter. Unlike the Celestial Fire, Vulcan needs air to be lighted, he can be extinguished, he always needs something to be fueled. The Terrestrial Fire for example must be fueled by wood: this is the reason why Vulcan has a wooden stick a a support.

Vulcan is thrown on Earth by Jupiter through a thunder.

The hat (pileus) evidences also the fact that Vulcan, with his tools of the Allegorical Art, is a Maker-God: artisan, blacksmith, forger, goldsmith and great expert of the secrets of the metals concealed in the underground stones.  

The knowledge of the metals and their secrets, the knowledge of metallurgy (thanks also to well defined allegorical tools - i.e. the hammer or the anvil), are clear links to the Traditional Science very similar to the Building Art, the Art of manipulation and use of the stones (i.e. the cornerstones) to create sacred Buildings.

Being a traditional Science, the Vulcan Knowledge shows a cosmological, iniziatic and symbolic value connected to the physical features of the metals (as astral and divine fecundation in the gremium matris terrae) and to their manipulation. The most relevant example of this Knowledge is Alchemy and its complex Science, Art and symbology related to the transmutation of the metals, the research of the transfiguring sings and powers hidden in the metals towards the palingenesis. Similarly, the metals are critical components in the Corpus Hermeticum and in the Emerald Tablet.

The metals are focal elements in the  Science of Correspondence and the Science of Signatures or those Traditional Sciences aimed to identify those signs and corrispondences linking the Worlds from Macrocosm to Microcosm. In particular, the metals are parts of the seven divine correspondences among the different levels of the Being connecting numbers, colors, metals, musical notes, planets, Gods/Goddesses, etc. I just remind that the Roman Temple was built over a base composed of seven steps each of which related to these correspondences. It's important to remind also the peculiarity of the site of the Volcanal in Rome.

These energies show a correlation expressed also by the metal, in particular by some metals. The Ages of the Mankind are also expressed into Metal Terms: Iron Age, Bronze Age, Golden Age. The use of these terms however may show a complex symbology going well behind the conventional meaning of the common use; it expresses a link between Time Cycles and a precise Metal (and its symbolic value) rather than a simple historical phases of mankind.

Some precise expressions of the status of the conscience are related to the metals/planets/Deities according to the spiral path of the palingenesis. 

• Saturn-lead-black: rational intelligence
• Moon-Diana-silver-white: life energies
• Jupiter-bronze-blue: external conscience-vis agendi-will
• Mercury-mercury-orange: infraconscious energy of the subtle, invisible, psychic intellect
• Mars-iron-red: ardor, animosity
• Venus-copper-green: love
• Sun-Apollo-Gold: solar conscience

It can be reported also the ermetic classification (freeing from the darkness and metals' transmutation):

• Lead-Saturn-Black
• Tin-Jupiter-Grey
• Silver-Moon-White
• Iron-Mars-Rust
• Copper-Venus-Red/Yellow
• Purple-Gold-Sun-Red

The metals' manipulation, in the myth of Vulcan, drives to the distinction between coarse (natural) and wrought metals, noble and base metals. The wrought metals, manipulated by Vulcan with his Art's Tools (i. e. Gold or Iron to forge swords or shields) are referred to an operation based on a secret and ermetic knowledge and work. Vulcan doesn't discover the metals and thier properties: he forges the metals with his fire in his workshop-smithy, in his furnace.

Coarse metals are a symbolic expression of a "petrifying" of cosmic energies which, being hidden in the deep underground, are covered by Darkness, materiality, "terrestriality". The metals' forging, and their sublimation-transformation in noble metals - in Gold (not the common, profane gold), represents a symbolical "purification" and "refining" or freeing a man/woman from the "Matter", the Darkness, the "Tomb of the Living Entity". This Fire-Vulcan is therefore an ermetic Fire, a Fire capable to extract, to shape, modifying and curving the Matter, capable to turn, even in spiritual terms, a coarse and concealed metal into a sword.

The corresponding links between metals, Deities and energy centres and organs in the human body are a further epressions of these relations. The Vulcan Knowledge describes a process according to which the energies of a Deity, hidded underground, are manifested in a metal thus consacrated to this Deity. Similarly these energies are concealed into the Centres (the Seven Centres of Life) and in the main organs of the body with a symbolic connections to some well-identified metals.

For this reason, the presence of certain metals on the body (or inside the boy) is not a casual event: at a very superficial level, the presence of these metals on the body and their contact with the body, implies a symbolic action with the Deities connected to these metals, sometimes stimulating in other circumstances hampering the flowing of the energies inside the body. In other cases they can awake sleeping forces inside the body or blocking them at all. The Vulcanic Knowledge thus involves a convergence between physics and theology, physiological and mystical factors: necklaces, rings or bracelets for example are not mere "nick-nacks" having just an aestetic value, but they can trasmit and translate a precise symbology connected to the divine value of the metal -or stone- they bring.

 

On the base of this Vulcanic Knowledge, it could be better to have an adequate awareness also of these issues.

Entrambe queste forze sono connesse al fuoco sotterraneo, ma, come scrivevo in quel post, esse presentano delle differenza sostanziali. Avendo già fornito qualche informazione su Maia, vorrei ora fare qualche considerazione su Vulcano (la cui festa principale cade comunque ad Agosto). Premetto che si tratta di una forza Divina molto complessa relativamente alla quale potrò fare solo qualche riflessione sommaria: essa infatti investe molti aspetti esoterici, teurgici ed alchemici che non possono essere affrontati in questa sede, anche per l'estrema complessità della materia difficile da banalizzare con poche parole (essa richiede infatti delle conoscenze esoteriche molto profonde). 

Quello che mi preme sottolineare, qualora ce ne fosse ancora bisogno, è che si tratta di effettuare delle considerazioni su vere e proprie forme di conoscenza e di sapienza : non si parla pertanto di Vulcano come un "vecchietto zoppo", ma come una precisa declinazione dell'essere della Natura, del Cosmo, dell'Universo, del Reale.

Come già detto, Vulcano esprime la sacralità del fuoco sotterraneo, di un calore delle profondità della Terra, che, a differenza di Maia, è strattamente legato ai metalli (simboli dei segreti più reconditi delle profondità della Terra e dello Spirito), alla metallurgia (la conoscenza della manipolazione dei metalli in senso esoterico), al "saper fare".

La Tradizione ci presenta Vulcano come un uomo muscoloso (la Forza del Fuoco) con il capo coperto da un copricapo (pileus) blu scuro. Ciò simboleggia che il Fuoco sotterraneo di Vulcano discende dal Cielo, dalle profondità più remote del Cielo. Ma Vulcano zoppica e si appoggia su un bastone perchè, pur derivando dal Fuoco Celeste e generato da questo, il Fuoco Terrestre è comunque meno intenso e dipendente dalla Materia. A differenza del Fuoco Celeste, il Fuoco di Vulcano ha bisogno dell'aria per accendersi. Il Fuoco di Vulcano può sempre spegnersi e può stentare perchè necessita sempre di qualcosa per essere alimentato: il Fuoco Comune Terrestre deve essere alimentato ad esempio dalla legna. Vulcano reca quindi un bastone di legno.

Vulcano viene scagliato sulla terra da Giove attraverso un fulmine.

Il copricapo (pileus) evidenzia inoltre il fatto che Vulcano, con i suoi utensili dell'Arte Allegorica, è un Dio-Artefice: artigiano, fabbro, forgiatore, orefice e sapiente conoscitore dei segreti dei metalli celati sottoterra nella pietra.

La conoscenza dei metalli, dei loro segreti e della metallurgia (grazie anche a precisi strumenti allegorici) fa riferimento ad una Scienza Tradizionale simile per molti aspetti all'arte della costruzione e della manipolazione della pietra per la costruzione di edifici. Essendo una Scienza Tradizionale, il Sapere di Vulcano ha un carattere cosmologico, iniziatico e simbolico che si lega alla dimensione fisica dei metalli (come fecondazioni astrali e divine nel gremium matris terrae) e della loro manipolazione. L'esempio più macroscopico è fornito dall'Alchimia e dalla sua complessa simbologia legata alla trasmutazione dei metalli, alla sua ricerca dei segni e dei poteri trasfiguranti celati nei metalli verso la palingenesi. Allo stesso modo i metali sono elementi centrali dello stesso Corpus Hermeticum e della Tavola di Smeraldo.

I metalli sono infatti una componente importantissima della Scienza delle Corrispondenze e della Scienza delle Segnature ovvero le Scienze Tradizionali dirette a scopire quei segni che uniscono i Mondi dal Macrocosmo al Microcosmo. Si tratta di quelle (sette) corrispondenze divine fra i vari livelli dell'Esistente che si riscontrano in primo luogo fra numeri, colori, pianeti, metalli, note musicali. Ricordo che il Tempio Romano sorgeva su un piedistallo composto da sette gradini, ciascuno dei quali fa riferimento ad una di queste corrispondenze (non bisogna poi dimenticare  la peculiarità del sito del Volcanal in Roma).

Queste energie sono poste in una correlazione che si manifesta quindi anche nei metalli, in particolare in alcuni metalli. Le stesse ere dell'umanità sono descritte secondo una simbologia metallica: Età del Ferro, Età del Bronzo, Età dell'Oro. Questa simbologia è molto più profonda e complessa di quella comunemente conosciuta perchè lega i cicli del Tempo ad un metallo ed al suo valore simbolico più che a delle conoscenze "pratiche" o fasi "storiche" dell'umanità.

 Inoltre ai metalli-pianeti si legano precisi stati della coscienza secondo il percorso a spirale della palingenesi:

• Saturno-Piombo-Nero: intelligenza raziocinante
• Luna-Argento-Bianco: energie vitali
• Giove-Bronzo-Blu: coscienza esterna-vis agendi-volontà
• Mercurio-Mercurio-Arancione. energia infracosciente dell'intelletto sottile, invisibile, psichico
• Marte-Ferro-Rosso: ardore, animosità
• Venere-Rame-Verde: amore
• Sole-Apollo-Oro-Giallo: coscienza solare

Vi è inoltre la seguente catalogazione ermetica (liberazione dall'Ombra e trasmutazione dei metalli):

• Piombo-Saturno-Nero
• Stagno-Giove-Grigio
• Argento-Luna-Bianco
• Ferro-Marte-Ruggine
• Rame-Venere-Rosso/Giallo
• Porpora-Oro-Sole-Rosso

La manipolazione dei metalli nel mito di Vulcano porta alla distinzione fra metalli grezzi (o naturali) e metalli lavorati, metalli nobili e metalli vili. Il metallo lavorato nel mito da Vulcano con i suoi Utensili dell'Arte (l'Oro o il ferro ad esempio per forgiare armi) fanno riferimento ad un'operazione che presuppone una conoscenza ed un'opera segreta, ermetica. Vulcano non scopre i metalli, ma li forgia con il fuoco nella sua officina-fucina presso il suo forno. I metalli grezzi sono una forma simbolica di "impietramento" di energie cosmiche che, proprio per essere celati all'interno della Terra, sono coperti di ombra, di materialità, di "terrestrità". La lavorazione dei metalli, e la loro trasformazione-sublimazione in materiali nobili fino alla trasformazione in Oro - non l'Oro volgare, costituisce simbolicamente la "raffinazione" cioè la liberazione dell'uomo e della donna dalla materialità, da questa ombra, dal "sepolcro del vivente". Il Fuoco-Vulcano è quindi un Fuoco ermetico, un fuoco che estrae, che plasma, che modifica e piega la materia, capace di trasformare, anche da un punto di vista spirituale, un metallo vile e celato inerte sottoterra in un'arma.

Le corrispondenze fra metalli, divinità e centri energetici ed organi del corpo umano sono un'ulteriore espressione di queste relazioni. Il Sapere Vulcanico descrive il processo secondo cui le energie di un Dio o di una Dea, calate e celate all'interno delle profondità della Terra, danno luogo ad un metallo a questa divinità consacrato. Allo stesso modo queste energie si celano nei centri (I Sette Centri di Vita) e negli organi principali del corpo creando quindi un nesso simbolico con i metalli.


La presenza di alcuni metalli sul corpo (o all'interno del corpo) non è pertanto un evento casuale: a livello molto superficiale la presenza di questi metalli sul corpo ed il loro contatto implicano simbolicamente agire con le Divinità corrispondenti, talvolta stimolando o ostacolando forze dormienti del corpo umano. Si determina quindi una convergenza fra fisica e teologia. fra fisiologia e mistica: collane, anelli o bracciali ad esempio non solo "meri gingilli" di solo valore estetico, ma strumenti dotati di una simbologia precisa connessa al valore divino del metallo o della pietra che essi recano.

Anche di questo, sulla base del Sapere Vulcanico, bisognerebbe avere adeguata consapevolezza.

Maia/Volcani - Underground Fire - Tepor

I have been asked to provide some details about the sacralization of the underground fire through the divine couple Maia/Volcani. I have been asked about the possibility to identify these Deities with the geothermal heath of the Earth and with lava.

Just at a first step, I could say that, according to an exoteric point of view, this similarity could be even possible. Nonetheless Maia and Vulcan, according to an esoteric and a deeper spiritual/religious perspective, have a value and a symbolic meaning defitively more complex.

Maia and Volcan are linked to two different kind of underground-inferi "heat" and "fire". Of course these "fire" aand "heat" have to be interpreted as occult and super-natural fire and heat rather than physical, profane and vulgar phenomena.

The current month of May is dedicated to Maia: so, in this occasion, I can provide just few details about fire and heat sacralized in the male polarity of Vulcan which are essentially Earth promordial energies capable to "ignite and empower the metals". This is an underground force thus connected to metals (in an esoteric sense) and to their symbolic properties: just think about the metallurgic myth of Vulcan (the "Blacksmith") and the symbology of the weapons he forges and shapes.

The fire and heat sacralized by Maia show different features. Even in this case, we are talking about occult, underground, hidden, infernal forces but not linked to metals: "everything depends" on these forces. While the  Vulcan's fire and heat  burn and forge, the Maia's ones do not burn and forge. This fire and this heat are subtle and mild. These are continuos interior forces. This is a fire without light. This is a heat coming from the inside propagating everywhere underground wrapping up everything like a mild fewer. It is a sensation of something  perpetually and slowly burning somewhere in an occult, remote and deep place inside the Earth.

It's better to define it "tepor" (warmth), rather than "heat", nourishing all the Nature: it is a warmth generated by the "Earth's Blood" moving from her Deep Heart and diffused everywhere underground through the veins and capillaries of the Earth.

This tepor is at the base of life, growth and development of all the expressions of Nature. Everything created, produced, emanated is provided with tepor, the Maia's warmth.

It is important to remind that Great and Small are the same: the macro and micro dimensions are the same. For this reason the cosmic and Naural dimensions are similar to the human one.

We thus find this tepor in anything provided with Life: this warmth is diffused through the body opposing to the cold status of Death. Not surpisingly any sacrifice (i.e. a libatio) involves the act of burning the offering on a fire because it makes visible this foundamental aspect of life.

This tepor, generated by a fire without light, is also an enthusiasm, a passion, a fervor. It is a warmth linked also to friendship and love ("warmly" is said in the common language). It is thus the warmth of love opposed to the cold rationality. It is the warmth of the "sacred breath" (flamen), pouring Life: it is the sensation to be alive. It is also the warmth produced by meditative and contemplation practices.

Maia is therefore a vital force irradiating in the Earth Depth as well as inside us through the blood.

Like the lava produced by a Volcano destroys everything but representing however the foundamental base for the creation of an extremely fertile field, similarly the heat and fire of Maia can become a devastating force when too powerful.

Maia/Volcani - Fuoco Sotterraneo

Mi è stato chiesto un chiarimento riguardo alla sacralizzazione del Fuoco Sotterraneo nella figura di Maia/Volcani. Mi si chiede se queste divinità possano essere identificate con l'attività geotermica della Terra e con la lava.

In prima battuta potrei rispondere che, da un punto di vista exoterico, questa assimilazione potrebbe anche essere possibile. In realtà Maia e Vulcano, da un punto di vista più profondamente religioso/spirituale ed esoterico, presentano un valore ed un significato estremamente più complesso. 

Maia e Vulcano sono connessi a due forme sotterranee-ctonie di "calore" e di "fuoco". Ovviamente non si deve intendere fuoco o calore in senso fisico, profano e volgare, ma di un fuoco e di un calore occulto. Poichè siamo nel mese dedicato a Maia, posso ora solo accennare che il calore ed il fuoco sacralizzato nella polarità maschile di Vulcano sono energie primordiali della Terra capaci di "accendere e vitalizzare i metalli". Si tratta di energie sotterranee legate quindi ai metalli (anche qui in senso esoterico e non fisico), alle loro proprietà simboliche: basta appena accennare al mito metallurgico di Vulcano  (il forgiatore) e alla simbologia delle armi da lui costruite. 

Diverso è il fuoco ed il calore sotterraneo sacralizzato da Maia. Anche in questo caso ci troviamo di fronte a forze occulte, sotterranee, ma da cui "tutto dipende". Mentre il fuoco ed il calore di Vulcano bruciano e fondono, quello di Maia non brucia e non fonde. Si tratta di un fuoco e di un calore sottili miti, continui, interiori, in particolare è un fuoco senza luce, il fuoco ed il calore presenti all'interno, che si propagano sottoterra avvolgendo tutto come una debole febbre.  E' la sensazione di qualcosa che brucia incessantemente e lentamente da qualche parte in un luogo occulto, remoto e profondissimo all'interno della Terra. 

Più che un calore è un "tepor", un tepore che alimenta tutta la Natura: è il tepore generato dal "sangue della Terra" che parte dal suo Cuore Profondo e si diffonde sottoterra ovunque attraverso vene e capillari della Terra stessa. 

E' un tepore ed un fuoco che danno la Vita, che accrescono e che sviluppano. Tutto ciò che è creato, prodotto, emanato è dotato di "tepor", il calore di Maia.

Poichè, bisogna sempre ricordarlo, ciò che è Grande è uguale a ciò che è Piccolo, ritroviamo per analogia nel microcosmo e nella dimensione umana ciò che è presente nel macrocosmo e nella dimensione della Natura. 

Lo ritroviamo come il tepore di tutto ciò che è dotato di vita e che si diffonde su tutto il corpo contrapponendosi al freddo della morte.  Non casualmente il sacrificio (ad es. la libatio) prevede di bruciare l'offerta sul fuoco, poiché rende visibile questo fondamento della vita.

Questo tepor, che è emanato da un fuoco senza luce, è anche un entusiasmo, una passione, un fervore. E' un calore che avvolge che si lega anche all'affetto e all'amore ("calorosamente" si dice nel linguaggio comune). E' il calore quindi dell'affettività che si contrappone alla freddezza della razionalità.

 

E' il calore del "soffio sacro" (flamen) che infonde la vita, è la sensazione di essere vivi. ed anche il calore prodotto da pratiche meditative e di contemplazione.

Maia quindi è una forza vitale che si irradia nella profondità della Terra così come all'interno di ciascuno di noi attraverso il "sangue".

Come la lava prodotta da un vulcano distrugge tutto al suo passaggio, ma rappresenta la base per la creazione di un terreno fertilissimo, allo stesso modo il calore ed il fuoco di Maia (tepor), può essere devastante, quando è troppo potente.
