When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

Vertumnus

The beginning of spring marks the opening of a period of "transformation" in which Nature, undertakes a period of change due to the restart of natural cycles. Humankind, being part of the Nature (or at least those who still consider themselves part of the Nature), undertakes similar deep changes.

This is therefore a period highly characterized by the presence of Vertumnus.

Vertumnus, a God with perhaps Etruscan or Sabine origin, is the sacralization of metamorphosis, transformation, perpetual change, in the broadest meaning and sense, due to the relentless flow of natural cycles and Time.

Vertumnus is the vertere in the most sacred and profound meaning. Wherever there is uncertainty, there is Vertumnus. Con-vert-ing, turn-ing, the hope that the fate turns in our favor, imply the presence of this God. The camouflage, the illusion, the transformation, the disguise, the mutation are the dimensions where Vertumnus operates.

In the Traditional Roman Spirituality, Gods and Goddesses usually have a non-unique, non-univocal  identity that, being distributed on a myriad of aspects, features and details related along a network of signs and symbols, it is always difficult to understand, identify, interpret. These fragmented aspects are combined and recombined: each of these combinations can potentially end in the identity of a God or a Goddess. Gods and Goddesses are not manifested in a vulgar and profane sense; they may be perceived, they may be understood within their "spheres of action and competence (officium)" which exert their power. This is a problematic task when discussing about a Deity who, by his nature, shows a rather changeable, elusive, fluid identity, just because representing the sacred nature of the transformation. Vertere is the focal attribute of Vertumnus and in this dimension he expresses his vis. In this case, the name of the God reassumes his identity. The meaning of the nomen of Vertumnus outlines the sphere of the action of this God.
Vertere is not only metamorphosis, but also "doubling" (Vertumni as plural), "reversal", "subversion": what is white becomes black and vice versa, what is male becomes female and vice versa, the sudden change of fate (pollice verso). If the vertere can be found in the prefix of the name of God (Vert), more implications are in the second part of his name that can refer to amnis (tide), annus (year) and omnia (all).
In this case Vertumnus can reverse the flowing of the events, change the course of the time, modify and transform all and modify and transform himself in all.
These characteristics of Vertumnus (his sphere of action) are therefore evidenced in this period of the year. We are in a phase of change of the seasons (anniversarius): Vertumnus operates in the transformations we see in plants, trees and herbs (this explains also his links  with Pomona), as well as in animals, clearly passing from a phase to another. Changes in colors, in flavors,in odors, in sounds: this is why we offer the first fruits in spring to Vertumnus.
It is important not to forget that the continuous mutation and transformation sacralized by Vertumnus also affect the entire universe as well as the human body, temperament, behavior and the same human society as a whole.

Vertumnus

Pomona

During summer we have received and enjoyed a large number and variety of fruits and vegetables from our gardens. Also Autumn, and particulalry October, is a period of harvesting. Just think about the grape harvest or the olive harvest which donate us wine and oil: these products are extremely important also for the Traditional Roman Religion being "Divine Gifts" of the Nature and linked to well defined Goddesses.

This period of harvest must be hence devoted to the sacralization of this fundamental force of the Nature which gives us so many fruits, essential for our life and health. The sacralization of this force is Pomona.

Pomona in the past had a specific Flamen (Flamen Pomonalis) but she has not a fixed festivity but rather a mobile festivity because it depends on the harvest maturation. It is represented, also according to the Ancient Tradition, through a wickler basket of fruits and vegetables.

Pomona is defined as "The Beneficial": she gives protection in particular to the fruit trees. Fruits are thus "Pomona's Gifts". She is linked to Vertumnus representing the sacralization of the seasons' changing and passing.

It's important to remind that the Latin term fructus doesn't mean "fruit", but "reward", "payoff", "benefit".

Fructus is the benefit deriving from the Earth and Nature goods. Fructuosus is what is fertile and fruitful: Pomona gives benefits and consequently fruits.

"Fruit" in Latin is translated with pomum: the fruit tree is translated into pomus.

I have created, with some fragments of a Homeric Hymn and a Orphic Hymn, this hymn to be used while offering fruits to Pomona in order to receive her benefits. Pomona reminds us also the semplicity and the richness of the Nature and her continuos flowing. Pomona helps us in acquiring this awareness.

Invocation to Pomona

Through You, women and men are blessed in their children

and blessed in their harvests,

To you it belongs to give means of life to mortal women and men

and to take it away

Happy are the woman and the man you delight to honour!
You have all things abundantly
and the  vital land is laden with fruits
and our house is filled with good things
bestow upon me for this my song
with beneficial prosperity

For You
With rapid whirl, eternal and divine
the perfect Nature
moves with powerful rhythm

You Blessed, matures sweet fruits
and with your beneficial spirit
supports fruitful seasons.

Pomona

Invocazione a Pomona

Hai in abbondanza ogni cosa
La Terra vitale si carica di frutti
Premia benigna il mio canto
con benefica prosperità

Per Te
il mondo ben costruito
per legge eterna
si muove con ritmo possente

Matura, o Dea beata, i dolcissimi frutti
