Baculum - Fides

One of the symbols characterizing a Cultor and a Cultrix is the baculum, a long wooden stick. It shows to be part of the community of Cultores of the Traditional Roman Religion. As vitis is a symbol of a pater/mater familias, lituus for the augur, the sceptre for the pontifex/pontifica,  baculum is the first  tool-symbol in the hierarchy of the ordo.

Being a long wooden stick, a man or a woman undertaking the Via without a baculum are essentially weak because their walking is lacking a support. 

The term "imbecile" (imbecille in italian) indicates a person without a baculum, unable to stand up both in physical and metaphorical sense. He/she is with no support, an idiot, a weak man/woman.  

Baculum is therefore a support to which one can rely on: it is the symbol of Fides the main support  to safely undertake the Via towards the Virtus. Without Fides one cannot be defined a Cultor/Cultrix  and consequently a good pater/mater familias, an augur, a pontifex... Fides, as well as the baculum is the foundation for our walking along our spiritual path.

It is important to highlight that Fides cannot be translated with the term "Faith" and there is no relation with this profane concept. Fides is something more complex and deeper. Faith in monoteism is a sentimental feeling and a passion expression where rational thought is denied in order to clutch at a revealed truth. Faith is often linked to body humiliations, an inner passivity, soul mortification, lack of rationale: this explains why, in the worst cases, faith in monoteism is a the base of fanaticism.

Fides, on the contrary, is closer to the idea of "Trust", "Reliability", "Confidence". Unfortunately, as in other occasions, we have no words in the modern languages  to correctly describe so complex concepts.

Not accidentally, Fides, in its sacralization, is strctly linked to Mens (Rational Thought). This is to confirm its abyssal distance from the monoteistic and fanatical idea of faith (faith is "blind" like rage and anger).

Fides is the basic principle for the human relations, for the relations between mankind and Deities. It is at the base of the civil life, oaths, obligations and pledges  (Fides preuspposes Dius Fidius) and the Pax Deorum. Fides is therefore a support to give shape to loyalty, fidelity, honor and respect as religious and ethical fondations.Without Fides, there are no reference points, human relations are untrustworthy, relations with Gods/Goddesses are empty. It means that one is relying on Fortune: he/she is living randomly, he/she is a weak and vulnerable  person.

All this explains why in Ancient Rome Fides had one of the oldest and highly considered cult as precondition for civil life.

The idea of Fides can explain also why, as I have already written, a Cultor/Cultrix "doesn't pray" in monosteistic and profane sense. At the base of the relations with the Deities there is no faith, but Fides or reciprocal trust. A Cultor/Cultrix and Deities are linked by a relation inspired by Fides: it means that both parties are trustworthy and capable to give trust. One can give trust only to whom is capable to inspire confidence.

Fides is a pure and upright force. For this reason the Flamines in the rites dedicated to Fides, showed their right hand covered with a white cloth. The right hand is a seat sacred to Fides. One give the right hand to express his fidelity, to make an oath. The right hand is the incarnation of Fides.

The white light in the Full Moon night is dedicated to Fides.

Fot these reasons Fides is a support like a baculum helping us during our walking. along the path A Cultor/Cultrix consequently has no faith: he/she must have no faith, because if he/she loses the contact with Mens, he/she becomes blind losing the state of awareness and awakening.

It is rather necessary to have "Trust", to rely on Fides.

Baculum - Fides

Uno dei simboli che caratterizzano un Cultor o una Culltrix è il baculum, un lungo bastone che appunto indica l'appartenenza alla comunità dei Cultori/Cultrici della Religione Tradizionale Romana. Come il vitis simboleggia lo status di pater/mater familias, il lituus quello di augur, lo scettro quello di pontifex/pontifica, ecc... il baculum è il primo strumento-simbolo nella gerarchia dell'ordo.

Essendo un lungo bastone, un uomo o una donna incamminati nella via senza baculum sono deboli perchè il loro camminare è privo di appoggio.  Dal fatto di essere privo di baculum deriva la parola italiana imbecille ovvero colui che non sta in piedi sia in senso fisico che metaforico, un uomo senza sostegni, senza appoggi: un debole.

Il baculum è quindi un sostegno su cui ci appoggiamo: esso è il simbolo della Fides che è l'appoggio che ci consente di incamminarci con sicurezza sulla Via verso la Virtus. Senza Fides non si può essere un Cultor o una Cultrix e quindi nemmeno un buon pater familias o una buona mater familias: meno che mai un augure o un pontefice... E' la base, il sostegno su cui fondiamo il nostro cammino lungo il nostro percorso spirituale.

E' bene precisare che Fides non corrisponde all'italiano e al profano Fede. E' un concetto molto più profondo e più complesso. La fede del monoteismo è un'espressione sentimentale e passionale in cui si rinnega la ragione per aggrapparsi ad una verità rivelata. La fede presuppone una passività mentale, che è caratteristica dei "poveri di spirito". La fede spesso si connette ad un'umiliazione del corpo, ad una negazione della ragione, una passività interiore e mortificazione dell'animo.

Fides invece è più vicina al concetto di "fiducia", "affidabilità".  Purtroppo, in questo caso come in altri, non abbiamo più le parole per esprimere concetti così complessi.

Non è un caso che Fides, nella sua sacralizzazione, sia strettamente connessa a Mens (il pensiero razionale). Questo conferma la sua distanza abissale dall'idea monoteistica e fanatica di fede (la fede è "cieca" come l'ira ed il furore). 

Fides è il principio dei rapporti fra gli uomini e fra questi e gli Dei/Dee. E' quindi alla base della convivenza civile, dei giuramenti (presuppone Dius Fidius) e della Pax Deorum. Su Fides noi quindi ci appoggiamo per dare forma alla fedeltà, all'onore e al rispetto come basi dell'etica e della religione. Non avere Fides vuol dire non avere più punti di riferimento, indebolire tutti i rapporti fra gli uomini e con gli Dei/Dee, significa affidarsi alla Fortuna, al caso: vuol dire essere deboli, vulnerabili.

Questo spiega perchè Fides deteneva a Roma uno dei culti più antichi, sentiti e rispettati perchè è il presupposto per la vita stessa di una comunità civile.

L'idea di Fides spiega anche perchè, come ho già scritto altrove, il Cultor e la Cultrix non "pregano" nel senso monoteista e profano del termine. Ciò avviene perchè alla base del rapporto con gli Dei/Dee c'è  Fides, non la fede, ovvero la "fiducia" reciproca. Cultori e Dei sono quindi legati da un rapporto ispirato da Fides che significa che entrambi sono degni di fiducia e capaci di dare fiducia: si dà fiducia a chi è affidabile.

Fides è una forza pura e integra. Per questo i Flamines nei riti ad essa dedicati si presentavano con la mano destra avvolta in un panno bianco: la mano destra è infatti una sede consacrata a Fides, la mano destra si porge per esprimere fedeltà. La mano destra è l'incarnazione stessa di Fides.

Le notti di luce bianca generata dalla Luna Piena sono dedicate a Fides.

Per questo ci appoggiamo a Fides come un baculum, come un sostegno per aiutarci nel nostro cammino. Il Cultor e la Cultrix quindi non hanno fede. anzi non devono averla perchè, perdendo il contatto con Mens, significa perdere lo stato di consapevolezza e di risveglio. 

E' necessario invece avere Fiducia.
