Precatio Omnium Herbarum

Nunc vos potentes omnes herbas deprecor.
exoro maiestatem vestram, quas parens
tellus generavit et cunctis dono dedit:
medicinam sanitatis in vos contulit
maiestatemque, ut omni generi identidem
humano sitis auxilium utilissimum.
hoc supplex exposco et precor: velocius
huc huc adeste cum vestris virtutibus,
quia, quae creavit, ipsa permisit mihi,
ut colligam vos; favit hic etiam, cui
medicina tradita est. quantumque vestra nunc
virtus potest, praestate medicinam bonam
causa salutis. gratiam, precor, mihi
praestetis per virtutem vestram, ut omnibus
in rebus, quicquid ex vobis ego fecero,
cuive homini dedero, habeatis eventus bonos
et effectum celerrimum. ut semper mihi
liceat favente maiestate vestra vos
colligere,
ponamque vobis fruges et grates agam
per nomen Matris, quae vos iussit nasciere.


Ora supplico voi, tutte le erbe potenti
vi prego con la vostra maestà
voi che foste generate dalla Madre Terra
e che offrì in dono a tutte le genti:
in voi pose la difesa della salute
e la grandezza affinchè foste utilissimo ausilio
a tutto il genere umano
Questo supplice chiedo e vi prego
di essermi vicine con le vostre virtù;
quella che vi creò infatti
in persona mi permise di raccogliervi
anche con l'aiuto di quello
di cui la medicina è stata affidata
e quanto può la vostra virtù 
offrite un rimedio efficace,
fonte di salute;
vi prego fatemi questa grazia
per la vostra virtù
affinchè ogni potere
tutto quello che avrò preparato con voi
e a qualunque uomo lo avrò dato
abbia l'effetto più rapido e salutare
e per sempre mi sia possibile raccogliervi
con il favore della vostra maestà...

With all you potent herbs do I now intercede; 
and to your majesty make my appeal: 
ye were engendered by Mother Earth, 
and given for a gift to all. 
On you she has conferred the healing which makes whole, 
on you high excellence, 
so that to all mankind you may be time and again an aid most serviceable. 
This in suppliant wise I implore and entreat: 
hither, hither swiftly come with all your potency, 
forasmuch as the very one who gave you birth has granted me leave to gather you: 
he also to whom the healing art is entrusted has shown his favour.
As far as your potency now extends, 
vouchsafe sound healing for health's sake. 
Bestow on me, I pray, favour by your potency, 
that in all things, whatsoever I do according to your will, 
or for whatsoever man I prescribe, 
ye may have favorite issues and most speedy result. 
That I may ever be allowed, 
with the favour of your majesty, to gather you. . .
 and I shall set forth the produce of the fields for you 
and return thanks through the name of the Mother 
who ordained your birth. 

Precatio Terrae Matris

We are about to undertake the great agricultural activities. For this reason I include this Precatio Terrae Matris as extremely important invocation also for the Arval Sisters and Brothers. It is important to remind this Precatio when we are approacing our agricultural and gardening works as spiritual and religious practice and Via as well as to keep us in a state of continuos awareness.

Dea sancta Tellus, rerum naturae parens,
quae cuncta generas et regeneras indidem,
quod sola praestas gentibus vitalia,
caeli ac maris diva arbitra rerumque omnium,
per quam silet natura et somnos concipit,
itemque lucem reparas et noctem fugas:
tu Ditis umbras tegis et immensum chaos
ventosque et imbres tempestatesque attines
et, cum libet, dimittis et misces freta
fugasque soles et procellas concitas,
itemque, cum vis, hilarem promittis diem.
tu alimenta vitae tribuis perpetua fide,

Goddess revered, O Earth, of all nature Mother, 
engendering all things and re-engendering them from the same womb, 
because thou only dost supply each species with living force, 
thou divine controller of sky and sea and of all things, 
through thee is nature hushed and lays hold on sleep, 
and thou likewise renewest the day and dost banish night. 
Thou coverest Pluto's shades and chaos immeasurable: winds, rains and tempests 
thou dost detain, and, at thy will, let loose, and so convulse the sea, 
banishing sunshine, stirring gales to fury, 
and likewise, when thou wilt, thou speedest forth the joyous day. 
Thou dost bestow life's nourishment with never-failing faithfulness, 
and, when our breath has gone, in thee we find our refuge: 
so, whatsoe'er thou bestowest, all falls back to thee. 
Deservedly art thou called Mighty Mother of Gods, 
since in duteous service thou hast surpassed the divinities of heaven, 
 and thou art that true parent of living species and of gods, 
without which nothing is ripened or can be born. 
Thou art the Mighty Being and thou art queen of divinities, O Goddess. 
Thee, divine one, I adore and thy godhead I invoke: 
graciously vouchsafe me this which I ask of thee: 
and with due fealty, Goddess, I will repay thee thanks. 
Give ear to me, I pray, and favour my undertakings: 
this which I seek of thee, Goddess, vouchsafe to me willingly. 
All herbs soever which thy majesty engendereth, for health's sake 
thou bestowest upon every race: 
entrust to me now this healing virtue of thine: 
let healing come with thy powers: 
whate'er I do in consonance therewith, let it have favourable issue:
to whomso I give those same powers or whoso shall receive the same from me, 
all such do thou make whole.

Precatio Terrae Matris

In occasione dell'avvio dei grandi lavori agricoli in campagna, accludo in questo post questa Precatio Terrae Matris, invocazione importantissima anche per i Fratelli e le Sorelle Arvali. Ricordiamola ogni volta che ci apprestiamo a "coltivare la Terra" come pratica religiosa e spirituale, come Via, e come percorso interiore per mantenere sempre viva la nostra consapevolezza.

 I Semplici, quanti ne genera la tua grandezza,
tu li dai, per la loro salute, a tutte le genti:
questo tuo rimedio ora tu accordami;
venga a medicare con le sue virtù.
 
 Qualunque cosa farò con essi, abbia buon esito;
a chiunque li darò, chiunque da me li riceverà,
falli sani in ogni tempo.
T’imploro, o Dea, che a me

Artemisia - Mater Herbarum

With the beginning of the Sacred Year, also the Nature, in her cycles, starts again her vegetative activities. For this reason I think that it could be useful to make some considerations about some concepts I consider extremely important also for an Arvalic Sister and Brother.

I would like to provide some detail about Artemisia, as foundamental component of the Sacred Knowledge and Sacred Science which Tradition, even if not so easily, has transmitted to us: this is a Via capable to link some experienced women and men to the Deities through some important Divine expressions.

Artemisia  is a Feminine Sacred Force intrinsecally inherent to the Nature which mainly (but not exclusively) is linked to plants, herbs, flowers, roots, mushrooms, trees. She is a real Hidden and Secret Power, concealed in the Nature whose knwoledge implies great efforts and long experience. Tradition has transmitted to us Artemisia as a Great Goddess, a Potnia, often known as Mater Herbarum: she is also linked to Artemis - Diana. Being a Feminine Force, Artemisia firstly is related to Women: this Potnia mainly (but not only) cures and recovers women and children. Being connected to Diana, as well known by now, Artemisia can be healthy but she can also drive to Death.

Inside the plants, flowers, herbs, mushrooms, roots, trees a complex secretd power is hidden from which it can be possible to obtain remedies and medicaments as well as poison. We all know that approaching this Goddess without adequate discernment, wisdom and knowledge can produce very serious consequences.

The knowledge and the respect required to approach this Goddess are at the base of the  Theobotanica or the Sacred and Divine Science of Plants and Herbs, one of the fundamental component of the Arvalic Knowledge.

Artemisia is the "Goddess of the Garden" above all the (wild) garden composed of Simples or those foundamental plants and herbs not requiring other herbs to be beneficial to health.

Plants, herbs, flowers, roots, mushrooms, trees not only have specific properties and signs but also relevant symbolic values. Creating an Arvalic Garden implies a global knowledge about values, propertie and functions of these Simples which Artemisia symbolizes as a whole.

Artemisia is therefore the wild "Creating Spontaneous Force" of the Nature and Earth, something, more than the idea of fertility, being capable to clearly evidence the link between Life-health-Death.

Artemisia - Mater Herbarum

Con l'avvio dell'Anno Sacro, anche la Natura nei suoi cicli riprende le sue principali attività vegetative, Per questo motivo ritengo sia utile dedicare qualche considerazione ad alcuni concetti molto importanti anche per un Fratello ed una Sorella Arvale.

Si tratta infatti di introdurre l'Artemisa come fondamento di una rilevante Conoscenza Sacra e Scienza Sacra che la Tradizione, faticosamente, ci ha trasmesso come Via che connette l'umanità al Divino attraverso alcune importanti manifestazioni.

Artemisia è una Forza Sacra Femminile insita nella Natura, che principamente (ma non esclusivamente) si lega alle piante, alle erbe, ai fiori, alle radici, ai funghi, agli alberi. Essa è un vero e proprio potere nascosto, celato nella Natura, la cui conoscenza richiede grande impegno ed esperienza. La Tradizione ci ha trasmesso Artemisia sotto forma di una Dea, una Potnia, spesso denominata Mater Herbarum, comunque connessa da Artemis - Diana. Essendo Forza Femminile, Artemisia in primo luogo si connette alle Donne: infatti questa Potnia principalmente (ma non solo) cura e guarisce le donne ed i bambini. Essendo personificata nella figura di Diana, come ormai noto, Artemisia può guarire, ma può anche portare la Morte. Nelle piante, nei fiori, ai funghi, nelle erbe, nelle radici, negli alberi si cela un potere complesso da cui si possono ricavare medicamenti, lenimenti ma anche veleni. Tutti sappiamo anche che avvicinarsi senza discernimento a questa Dea può avere infatti conseguenze molto gravi.

La conoscenza ed il rispetto che si deve a questa Forza Divina costituiscono i presupposti per la Theobotanica ovvero la Scienza Sacra e Divina delle Piante, uno dei fondamenti del Sapere Arvalico.

Artemisia è la "Dea del Giardino", in particolare quello costituito dai Semplici ovvero quelle piante ed erbe fondamentali che già da sole possono sostenere la salute. 

Tutte le piante, le erbe, i fiori, le radici, i funghi, gli alberi non solo dispongono di proprietà e segni specifici, ma anche di un importante valore simbolico. La costituzione di un Giardino e/o un Orto Arvalico deve quindi tener presente il valore, ruolo, proprietà e funzione innanzitutto di questi semplici che Artemisia simboleggia nel loro insieme.

Artemisia è pertanto la "spontaneità creatrice" della Natura e della Terra, quindi qualcosa ben oltre il semplice concetto di "fertilità" capace di evidenziare il legame fra vita-salute-morte.
