When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

Sementinae - Seeds

This period of the year was in the past biased around the Feriae Sementinae (in cities) or Feriae Paganicae (in the countryside). These festivities were primarily connected to important agricultural activities for the end of the sowing.

The Flamen Quirinalis invoked:
Veruactor, Reparator, Imporcitor, insitor, Obarator, Occator, Sarritor, Subruncinator, Mesor, Conuector, Conditor, Promitor

But the core of this festival was the simultaneous invocation to Ceres and Tellus.

This is the invocation addressed to these Goddesses:

"The greedy settlers be satiated with immense harvest  because their labor has worthy prize. The tender seeds do not cease to grow and sprouts are not burned by the frost. When we sow, provide us with sunny skies; when the seed is underground, water it with  rain. The birds do not kidnap it, the ants do not steal it. and the little plant grow healthy and weeds do not choke it to produce ears of corn aplenty "

The Feriae Sementinae had, and still have, however, a meaning that goes beyond the merely agricultural sphere. The importance of this festival is stricly linked to the complex symbolism, about which I can only provide some brief considerations, related to the "seed" and the "field."

The "field" is connected to the Earth-Tellus representing the Body, the Matter (Mater-Materia). The seed is an inert element (dead), but thrown in the ground, symbolic place of all the vital elements (Ceres), it reborns developing the full potential of the plant according to the cycles and colors of the seasons (in physical and metaphysical terms):
- Winter (black)
- Spring (white)
- Summer (red)
- Autumn (gold)

The seed then symbolizes the principle of generation, the "potential of the Being" which derives from the depths of the Earth (Ceres and Tellus). This is the base of the importance of the act of cultivating not only in a practical sense, but also, and above all, in symbolic and cult-ritual terms. Needless to say, the Gods and Goddesses must be coultivated (Colere Deos/Deas). Pietas is the correct approach to spirituality as a form of symbolic cultivation in which seeds are thrown,  they must germinate, grow, flower and generate fruit.

"The grain of wheat will not give ears until it is thrown into the field-ground-Earth": the rebirth implies the "fall." It is interesting to read therefore the above-mentioned invocation to Ceres and Tellus with this deeper interpretative perspective.

Sementinae - Semi

Veruactor, Reparator, Imporcitor, Insitor, Obarator, Occator, Sarritor, Subruncinator, Mesor, Conuector, Conditor, Promitor

Traditional Symbols: the Honey Bee

"The Bee, dancing, the scented petal with desire observes"

In this ancient Etruscan inscription, with a few words of great poetic force, all the complex symbolism that concerns the Bee, in Ancient Traditional Spirituality, is described.

Here I can only provide a few brief remarks on this complex symbology.

According to the Ancient Traditions, to which the Traditional Roman Spirituality is connected, the bee has always symbolized the Soul. In particular the bees symbolize the initiated souls that, once left the body, undertake their journey back to the Universe, the Divine sphere. The soul-bee provided with wings (like birds) are freed of the "cage of the body" rejoining the entire system of forces and energies of the cosmos. The wings (supernatural organ) are a symbol of transcendence and overcoming the human material condition. In the funeral urns often it is depicted a bee flying around a vessel or the soul of the deceased began leaving the body to which, however, she could return for the desire of life.

Hence the Bee (soul) is dancing (generation) observing with desire (Eros) the scented petal (life)

These initiated souls are called "Melissae" (bees) and are connected to the underworld Goddesses (Tellus, Ceres/Demeter, Proserpine/Persephone) and Mitra. The initiated and purified soul, symbolized by the bee, it is then initiated into the Great Mysteries (priestess) as a prerequisite for a return to the divine and cosmic dimension.

Not coincidentally the ancient tombs have the appearance of hives (rather than columbaria).

The bee is animal protected by the Gods and goddesses because considered pure, wise, sober animal and especially because it produces honey, sacred food involving a very complex symbolism.

The connection between the Bees and Ceres/Demeter is underlined by the presence in many rites of wheat or spelled buns associated with honey: Ceres is a divine "civilizing" force, distracting humans by the consumption of meat toward a vegetarian diet, inspiring in the humankind the decency (symbolically connected to the sober clothing). All attributes symbolically assigned also to the bees (pure souls). The bees are then connected the sober libationes or "libationes of the bees" or sacrifices that imply the use of honey without the shedding of blood or the presence of wine.

The bee is pure and "civil" animal, linked to the Earth, symbol of order and organization, an animal that eats only sweet food and drink only pure water: the bee symbolically born from the bovine body (rebirth of the soul from the body).

Nymphs and priestesses related mystery cults and the great goddesses are said Melissae (bees): the name of the first Magna Mater's priestess was Melissa who, along with her sister Amalthea, raised Zeus when he was a child. The Pythia had the epithet of Melissa to the prophetic power of the bees. The same Magna Mater (venerated in Ephesus in the famous Temple with the name of Artemis) is represented in the form of Queen Bee.

The Moon is called Melissa because it presides over the generation that is the entrance of the souls in the world.

The sober and wise woman, who doesn't not practice any "excess" in food or sex, capable guarantee the order, organization and the respect of the sense of limits and decency in the family and society (Mater Familias), was named Melissa.

In Rome, the Goddess Mellona (or Mellonia) represented the consecration of honey production and was cited in the Indigitamenta.

Simboli Tradizionali: l'Ape

The Olive Tree

In this period, in many areas around the Mediterranean Sea many people are involved in olive harvesting. For this reason I have decided to dedicate this post to a tree having a very important role in the Traditional Roman Religion: the Olive Tree.

I would like to highlight that when I talk about trees, in this case as in other occasions, I do not want to make historical or cultural anthropological considerations but rather to provide some reflections about a way, in my opinion, to consider the trees for a modern Cultor/Cultrix as Deities' living manifestations.

Today, as in the past, olive and oil are fundamental components in the Mediterranean diet and the Mediterranean landascape itself cannot be imagined without olive trees. Quite commonly we in Italy eat olives (in various modalities and dishes) and we always make common use of oil whose benefits for health have been confirmed also by science.

The olive tree is a "cosmic tree" by definition: it is the "Tree of Life".

Oil is a sacred food; so sacred to be used to "consacrate".

The olive tree is sacred to Minerva. I think that the link between this tree and Minerva can be explained by the fact that in the past oil was used also for fuelling lanterns. Oil is thus a "light-maker". Minerva is the sacralization of the "Light of Reason": so oil symbolically fuels this light.

The olive tree is sacred also to Ceres because is a tree providing food to mankind.

Wood from olive tree is one of the main material to create sacred symbolic imagines. Cutting or burning an olive tree with no reason is considered an insult to all Gods/Goddesses in particular to Minerva and Ceres.
------
After the oil harvest in mid-november we use. to celebrate the new oil, to have a dinner with family members and friends based mainly on oil. Oil is used on slices of garlic bread, to dress beans, onions and chickpeas.

L'ulivo
