When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

Dicembre - Saturno

Ciò spiega l'espressione: individuare l'Oro Nascosto in Saturno.

Sempre fiorente,
padre degli Dei beati e degli uomini,
dai vari espedienti, incorrotto,
di grande forza, prode Titano,
che tutto esaurisci
e al contrario tu stesso accresci
che hai legami infrangibili nel cosmo infinito,
Crono generatore assoluto dell’eternità,
Crono dal vario parlare,
germoglio di Terra e Cielo Stellato,
nascita, crescita, diminuzione,
capostipite, dai disegni tortuosi,
ottimo: ascoltando la voce supplice
manda un felice termine di vita
sempre irreprensibile.

The Cypress

The Cypress is an infelix tree, connected to the underworld deities Pluto and Proserpina and subjected to the influence of Saturn. Because of its shape, it is mainly linked to Pluto (Jupiter of the Underworld: The richest of all the Gods): this God, who traditionally does not have an anthropomorphic representation, is manifested symbolically in the form of a cypress.

Being permeated by this God, who, like all the underground Deities, is connected to the natural cycle of life/death, the cypress trees were always planted in groves around temples: eradicating a cypress symbolically is therefore an act of sacrilege against Pluto.

For the same reason (the cycle of life/death of Nature), the cypress trees are planted around the vineyardsi, cultivated fields, the borders between fields. Its wood is considered sacred and imperishable: the scepter of Jupiter or the club of Hercules are symbolically made of cypress wood.

The cypress expresses Despair and Inconsolable Sorrow. Symbolically, according to tradition being a plant related to Death, it allows to "walk on water" (death is placed above the Life-water), to remain in the abyss and be invisible. This tree is also used for some of the so-called remedies "Purple Via" (purple is the color of Pluto representing the light in darkness) and preparation of incenses and smokes.

His ritual name is Cyparissus

Hortus Arvalis: the Jupiter's Flowerbed

The Jutiper's Flowerbed (September is dedicated to this God) is a relevant component of the Hortus Arvalis. This flowerbed includes many corroborating, detoxifying and sedative herbs and plants such as:

  • sage
  • white henbane (different from the black henbane sacred to Apollo)
  • juniper
  • balm
  • lavender
  • chicory
  • potentilla
  • hyssop
  • dandelion
  • oleander

It is important to note that the Linden (sacred name Philyra) is a sacred tree to Jupiter.

The Moon's Flowerbed

A very important  component of the Arval Garden is surely the Moon's Flowerbed about which it's interesting to provide some detail even in consideration of the current period of the year.

The importance of the Moon's flowerbed results from many factors (very difficult to describe here in detail): one of these is the strict relation between this flowerbed and Diana in her deeper, arcane, iniziation and hermetic meaning. Moreover this flowerbed expresses, in "green terms", all the power of the Feminine Force. The Moon's flowerbed describes the sacred generating and reproductive force: in this flowerbed the generating force of the seeds, the Force of the Nature, giving life and shape to all the being and fruits, are simbolically and directly represented.

The general knowledge of herbs, plants and trees, and their properties, is directly connected to the Moon and to Diana: since the very ancient times, a real "Green Religion", a kind of superior Magic, strictly linked to the cult of Diana and the Moon, was developed.  The main focus of this peculiar religion is the possibility to develop an arcane capability to manage the feminine energy inherent to the green world, plants, herbs, trees which are always feminine beings (like the Ninphae or the Elfs). Therefore, women, but not exclusively, have played a preminent role within this Sacred Feminine Knowledge. The Arval Sisters are thus directly involved in this Science (which in the past was connected to the idea of the witch with the related tragic consequences). The Arval Brothers must give great evidence to their inner feminine force in order to fully enter this Great Sacred Knwoledge.
In this flowerbed the main Lunar Plants, sacred to Diana are placed. These herbs, like the Force of Diana, provide on the one hand  relief, being soporific, relaxing, sedative. On the other hnad they can increase ncontrolled divination capabilities driving one to madness ("lunacy") also provoking nervous umbalances with hallucinations and nightmares (consider also the origin of this term...).

As on the case of the Solar Herbs, the use of the Lunar and night herbs  implies a deep arval knowledge. I recommend the profane people not to try to make experiments with these herbs.

The Lunar Herbs are:
  • poppy
  • mallow
  • althaea
  • nimphaea
  • jasmine
  • lunaria
  • iris
  • lilium
  • fern
  • myrrh
  • peony
  • hyssopus
  • melissa

In particular I evidence:
  • the nymphaea - it can provoke dreams, visions, nightmares, hallucinations
  • the myrrh - it is used to produce sacred oils and fragrances beloved to Gods, Goddesses, Lares, Penates and Manes.
  • the Lunaria - it is "the lenitive" by definition, used to regulate menstruation
  • the Hyssopus - a purification plant

  • papavero
  • malva
  • altea
  • ninfea
  • gelsomino
  • lunaria
  • iris
  • giglio
  • felce
  • mirra
  • peonia
  • issopo
  • melissa

In particolare segnalo:
  • l'Issopo (pianta purificatrice)

with the favour of your majesty, to gather you. . .
and I shall set forth the produce of the fields for you
and return thanks through the name of the Mother
who ordained your birth.

The Apollo's and Sun's Flowerbed: the Laurel

July describes a period totally dedicated to the Force of Apollo and the Energy of the Sun (I repeat again, to be intended as metaphysical, cosmic, symbolic and universal entity rather than an astronomic object).

One of the plants highly representing, in the Green Language of the Nature, this force and energy is surely the Laurel. The Laurel is therefore the Apollo's plant by definition.

According to the Arval Knowledge, this plant is placed in the the Sun Flowerbed (one of the 4 main flowerbeds in the Hortus Arvalis) together with the helichrysum, chamomile, incense, rosemary, hypericum, angelica, euphrasia, calendula, mistletoe, potentilla tormentilla.

The Sun's flowerbed describes a dry and hot dimension, the Gold dimension, yellow, where the vital power of the Sun is evidenced. Here the Sun is described as the Vital Spring capable to include qualities and characteristics of the other Planets. These plants have sudorific, tonic and stimulating properties.

The laurel in particular represents power, supremacy, eternity, immortality, art, honor, glory. It is an important prophetic plant showing a very complex symbolism. It is quite redundant to cite the well-known link between the laurel and the Pythia.

Used as medical remedy, the laurel may stimulate the physical energy regenerating the physical inner balance of the body. In the same time it provides (according to the tradition) "wide clairvoyance".

The Laurel's sacred name is Daphne.

The laurel, according to the Roman tradition, cannot be hit by thunders: this is the reason why frequently in the country the laurel is planted near the houses where it can reach even remarkable dimensions. Tradition nonetheless describes the idea that this plant, describing the Apollo and the Sun power and energy, is so important for the community of Cultores and Cultrices, both in material and metaphysical/symbolic terms,  to be considered sacred ("The Untouchable") also by the Celestial Gods and Goddesses.

The Goddess Victoria is always represented having a branch or a crown (symbolic circular control tool - like rings and necklaces) of laurel as symbol of supremacy of the Order over the forces of Chaos. This is the reason why the Roman Emperors, consuls or generals had the crown of laurel during the triumph: not accidentally these crowns were put down over the knees of the statue of Jupiter Optimus Maximus.

Everything related to the Laurel, as sacred plant, is therefore connected to complex liturgies, rites, meanings, symbols, myths and mysteries whose sense and meaning still remain completely obscure for many profane individuals.

Nymphs, Spirits of the Trees, Fairies

When walking in a forest, in silence and solitude, one can feel that the trees are whispering and murmuring. According to the Tradition, trees are not mere objects, immobile component of the landscape, simple expressions of the plant kingdom: they are rather Living entities, they are "Beings". They are moreover "inhabited": they effectively whisper and murmur.

Trees, with no exception, are expressions of a Deity, usually a Goddess (but not always...). We are in June now, so I remind that the Oak is a tree sacred to Juno (even before a tree sacred to Jupiter) as well as the walnut, the nut tree and the almond tree. In the past, before a  marriage, nuts, almonds and walnuts were offered as symbols of fecundity and solidity of the future family.

The spirit of the Oak is a Driad: every oak has her own driad distinguishing each oak from another oak like every man has his own Genius and every woman has her own Juno. These spirits of the trees are also identified as Nymphs and, having a remarkable generating force, are always expression of the feminine energy. This is the reason why trees in the Latin language, have always a feminine gender.

The popular folklore has then transformed these Nymphs into Fairies. Every trees has therefore a spirit, a Nymph, a Fairy: the presence of such Fairies is not aimed to populate the fairytales for children but rather granting and preserving the identity of every tree, their dignity as noble expressions of the Force of the Nature.

Here I include as an example a short list of names of some Fairies linked to important sacred trees.
  • Driad: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Oak
  • Melia: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Ash
  • Maelia: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Pomegranate
  • Cariatide: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Nut tree
  • Eliconia: spirit-nimph-fairy of the Willow

The Lily

June is a month enterely permeated by the universal feminine force of the Nature embodied in Juno. The flower better describing this Nature's divine force embodied by Juno is the lily.

In Arval terms and within the Arval Science, the lily is named Iunonia Rosa and, being symbol of fertility, was (and still is) the sacred flower always accompanying any feminine rite and cult. In the Arval Garden (hortus) the lily is included in the Moon's flowerbed. The lily is one of the main floral symbol of the Great Mother Goddess: Juno, as declination of this Goddess, expresses authority, regality, nobility of this cosmic force as well as the power of her laws and rules. The lily therefore describes these qualities and properties.

Like other Sorceress-Goddesses and as potnia, also Juno, in Arval terms, describes a hortus sanitatis. This kind of garden must be sorrounded by oaks. In a clearing the Juno's hortus sanitatis can be created where the lilies can be cultivated, as symbols of the fecundating feminine force, together with the pomegranate, crocus, pansy, red anemone, hyacinth, poppy and lotus. These flowers and plants represent the Juno's essences.

The lily/fleur-de-lis, as well as the whole Juno's hortus sanitatis, are important  components of the Great Symbolic Garden where they represents fertility, fecundity, peaceful future. They are thus essential elements of the so-called Flower-Woman symbol of felicitas or harmony with Gods and Goddesses.

The white lily represents the purity of the feminine force and the purity and sacrality of the feminine sexual sphere: together with the red lily, they are important symbols in the Sacred Science, in esoterism and in the Hermetic Science.

Precatio Terrae Matris

We are about to undertake the great agricultural activities. For this reason I include this Precatio Terrae Matris as extremely important invocation also for the Arval Sisters and Brothers. It is important to remind this Precatio when we are approacing our agricultural and gardening works as spiritual and religious practice and Via as well as to keep us in a state of continuos awareness.

Dea sancta Tellus, rerum naturae parens,
quae cuncta generas et regeneras indidem,
quod sola praestas gentibus vitalia,
caeli ac maris diva arbitra rerumque omnium,
per quam silet natura et somnos concipit,
itemque lucem reparas et noctem fugas:
tu Ditis umbras tegis et immensum chaos
ventosque et imbres tempestatesque attines
et, cum libet, dimittis et misces freta
fugasque soles et procellas concitas,
itemque, cum vis, hilarem promittis diem.
tu alimenta vitae tribuis perpetua fide,
et, cum recesserit anima, in tete refugimus:
ita, quicquid tribuis, in te cuncta recidunt.
merito vocaris Magna tu Mater deum,
pietate quia vicisti divom numina;
tuque illa vera es gentium et divom parens,
sine qua nil maturatur nec nasci potest:
tu es Magna tuque divom regina es, dea.
te, diva, adoro tuumque ego numen invoco,
facilisque praestes hoc mihi quod te rogo;
referamque grates, diva, tibi merita fide.
exaudi me, quaeso, et fave coeptis meis;
hoc quod peto a te, diva, mihi praesta volens.
herbas, quascumque generat maiestas tua,
salutis causa tribuis cunctis gentibus:
hanc nunc mihi permittas medicinam tuam.
veniat medicina cum tuis virtutibus:
quidque ex his fecero, habeat eventum bonum,
cuique easdem dedero quique easdem a me acceperint,
sanos eos praestes. denique nunc, diva, hoc mihi
maiestas praestet tua, quod te supplex rogo.

Goddess revered, O Earth, of all nature Mother,
engendering all things and re-engendering them from the same womb,
because thou only dost supply each species with living force,
thou divine controller of sky and sea and of all things,
through thee is nature hushed and lays hold on sleep,
and thou likewise renewest the day and dost banish night.
Thou coverest Pluto's shades and chaos immeasurable: winds, rains and tempests
thou dost detain, and, at thy will, let loose, and so convulse the sea,
banishing sunshine, stirring gales to fury,
and likewise, when thou wilt, thou speedest forth the joyous day.
Thou dost bestow life's nourishment with never-failing faithfulness,
and, when our breath has gone, in thee we find our refuge:
so, whatsoe'er thou bestowest, all falls back to thee.
Deservedly art thou called Mighty Mother of Gods,
since in duteous service thou hast surpassed the divinities of heaven,
and thou art that true parent of living species and of gods,
without which nothing is ripened or can be born.
Thou art the Mighty Being and thou art queen of divinities, O Goddess.
Thee, divine one, I adore and thy godhead I invoke:
graciously vouchsafe me this which I ask of thee:
and with due fealty, Goddess, I will repay thee thanks.
Give ear to me, I pray, and favour my undertakings:
this which I seek of thee, Goddess, vouchsafe to me willingly.
All herbs soever which thy majesty engendereth, for health's sake
thou bestowest upon every race:
entrust to me now this healing virtue of thine:
let healing come with thy powers:
whate'er I do in consonance therewith, let it have favourable issue:
to whomso I give those same powers or whoso shall receive the same from me,
all such do thou make whole.
Finally now, O Goddess, let thy majesty vouchsafe to me what I ask of thee in prayer.

Precatio Terrae Matris

che da sempre generi e rigeneri tutte le cose;
perchè tu sola proteggi i viventi,
e perciò arbitra del cielo, del mare e di tutto;
per te tace la natura e dorme,
tu rinnovi la luce e fai fuggire la notte:
tu copri l’ombre di Dite e l’immenso caos;

Tu sei veramente Mater dei viventi e degli dei;
senza te nulla può maturarsi e giungere al nascimento;
Te, o dea, adoro e invoco la tua potenza;
benigna concedimi ciò che ti chiedo,
e ti renderò giuste grazie, o dea.
Esaudiscimi, come tu soli, ti prego, e sii propizia ai miei compiti;

questo tuo rimedio ora tu accordami;
venga a medicare con le sue virtù.

 Qualunque cosa farò con essi, abbia buon esito;
a chiunque li darò, chiunque da me li riceverà,
falli sani in ogni tempo.
T’imploro, o Dea, che a me

Hortus Arvalis: the Venus' Flowerbed

We are in Spring time and  now we can devote ourselves to the preparation of our garden. In particular, being April dedicated to Venus, in this post I would like to make some considerations about the section of the garden dedicated to this Goddess, as critical component of the Hortus Arvalis (Arval Garden)

First of all, I think that it could be useful to provide some brief detail about the Hortus Arvalis. An Arval Garden is the place where the Arval Knowledge in embodied in botanical and Theobotanical terms. Its structure and organization should depict the harmony between the Nature, in her deeper essence, and the human spirit. This can achieved through the symbolic knowledge of the herbs and plants the garden includes, their placement and the sacred geometry the Garden represents as place of contact between the macrocosm and microcosm dimensions. In brief, the Hortus Arvalis is a sort of "Green Book" written with the symbols, letters and grammar of the Tradition where the Three Worlds (Inferi, Surface, Sky) can find the description of their communication and harmony.

Every plant and herb, through its placement within a precise sacred geometry, thus becomes a tool capable to catalyze benefits and energies deriving fom the contact and harmony between these worlds.

Being expression of the generating force of the Earth, the Arval Garden has a squared or rectangular shape: it will be divided into four main sectors whose division can be made with two lanes intersecting at the centre. In this way, the four main elements (water, air, fire, earth) are represented and the fifth element (quintessence) is placed in the middle as axial point.

I can just remind that the antique roman domus surrounded a hortus showing these characteristics with at the centre water as generating element (life) and axial-contact point with the Sky (water is simbolically an infernal element but this case involves the Rain, as water falling from the Sky). This tradition has been copied, maintained and used in the Middle Age in the cloisters with a well as axial point and contact between the inferi, the surface and the sky. In the Reinassance this tradition was at the base of the great hermetic, symbolic and botanic gardens.

The Sacred Geometry at the base of the Arval Garden is symbolically aimed to evidence and streghten the (more or less occult) properties of plants and herbs under the influence of the Divine Forces connected to them, the Sacred Astrology and the underworld providing nourishment to plants and herbs.

The Arval Garden represents therefore the link between planets, metals, plants, Deities, numbers, colors and musical notes. It should have the power to stimluate all the senses: in this way it become a perfect place to practice otium and spiritual purification. The Arval Garden usually includes the "Simples", or those herbs capable, without other ingredients, to produce effects: these herbs can be eaten, used for infusions, compresses, essences, pomades.

Every herb and plant is connected to a Divine Force according a precise correspondence: from these Deities the plants receive some signs, prints, symbols (Doctrine of Signatures) and above all characteristics, qualities, positive (or negative) properties, influences. Any part of the plant, like the human body, is consacrated to a specific Deity: Saturn-roots, Mercury-seeds and bark, Mars-stem and trunk, Pomona/Jupiter-fruits, Moon-leaves, Venus/Flora-flowers.

The Arval Garden is structured into four main sections, which may be divided in further sub-areas. These sub-sections may show particular geometrical shapes on the base of the principles of Geomancy, a divination science through the esoteric value of the geometric shapes and spaces where placing plants, herbs and flowers in order to obtain the better qualities and properties from them.

It is important to note that the bordering of the flowerbeds have a foundamentally symbolic value rather than an aesthetic one because, according to the Tradition, the plants used for the bordering must have the capabilities to avoid the dispersion of the properties of the plants included in the flowerbed

One of the four main sections in the Arval Garden is the Venus' Flowerbed. It should include:  oregano, mint, verbena, alchemilla, prunella, artemisia, pomegranate, venus hair fern, moss, myrtle, columbine, orange, heather, violet, rose.

The perfumed herbs and those plants used for cosmetics are sacred to Venus, a Divine Force at the base of the essences, fragrances and perfumes.

This topic is rather long and I don't want to involve the reader in long and boring discussions. Anyway, it is important to do some remarks as conclusion for this post.
First of all, having even a minimal knowledge about the symbolic value of the plants, trees, flowers, and herbs included in an Arval Garden can contribute to regain a new respect for trees and plants understanding in the same time, the complex symbolic value of plants and gardens (also those in the medieval cloisters and the botanical gardens of the reinassance). It is important to understand that these places have a symbolic, religious and spiritual value before the aesthetic one. They are the representation of a particular vision of the Nature, the World and the Universe through a Traditional Language which often has been lost.

Moreover, I would like to evidence that everyone of us can make his/her own Arval Garden because not always it requires great space and high botanical skills. Everyone can make it also in a small scale. Taking care of these plants in an Arval Garden can be a way not only to produce our food, spices and essences through an useful physical activity, but also to gain personal peace and harmony. In brief physical and psychological wellness.

Mi preme però in conclusione sottolineare alcune cose.
