When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

Vesta - Cohesion

Vesta  is a fundamental Goddess for the Traditional Roman Spirituality: this is confirmed by the critical role this Goddess played in the past for the Roman State, Community and Family.

Vestia is similar to the Greek Goddess Hestia with whom shares some characteristics. Nonetheless Vesta shows some peculiarities differentiating her from Hestia.

Porphiry, in Perì agalmàton, says that "The ruling principle of the power of Earth is called Hestia, of whom a statue representing her as a virgin is usually set up on the hearth; but inasmuch as the power is productive, they symbolize her by the form of a woman with prominent breasts".

Hestia, according to the tradition, has a prominent role among the Deities because she is at the beginning of the geneaology of the non-primordial Gods and Goddesses.  Hellenics firstly invoke her: she embodies the productivity of Earth and the common fire of mankind and Deities. she is alone, virgo, without limits, static, stable, firm: she cannot suffer any modification. She is at the Centre, she is Virtus. She represents a force placed in the inner places, as centre and foundation of the Universe: for this reason she is the cause permitting the stable permanence in itself of the essence of everything.

Vesta shows similar characteristics: she is the sacralization of that cohesion force, unifying and tying force, linking a family, a community, a State. But this powerful cohesion force can be found in everything as foundation of the existence of the Universe in its macrocosm and microcosm dimensions. She has the power of the Centre generating a centripetal energy, as the gravity force of the Earth. Vesta is the Relation-Energy, the Attraction Energy at the base of everything. She is the force keeping the Universe together.  For the Pythagoreans, the Centre of the Universe, the everything's origin, is named "the Hearth".

Being a cohesione force, Vesta is in opposition to Mercury who, in a broad sense, is always "elusive", "volatile", "always on the run".

According to the tradition, after the creation of a family, Vesta enters the house, not stepping on the doorway - sacred to Janus - sitting silently near the hearth or in the kitchen. She will sit there as long as the family will remain united in harmony. Meals at home among the family members is the most importat private rite dedicated to Vesta.  Conversely, Mercury enters the houses from the windows: he enters the house only to steal...

Vesta, in her silence, represents a condition of inner being, calmness, non-agitation in opposition to the agitation of Mercury. It emerges moreover the idea of permanence, stability, durability: a way back home, in a very broad symbolic sense, a turn towards the inner dimension, the centre, the origin, the silence. She is the "inner dimension", the "inner house", intimacy. Vesta, also considering her geneaology, is a starting and arriving point, the arrival to our safe destination. Her silence evokes contemplation, returning to our personal destiny.

Vesta is a "cohesion fire". This is a peculiar kind of fire defined also as the "fire of the house owner": this fire is totally different from other sacred fires such as the Vulcan's or the Mars' ones. The fire of Vesta is an originating fire not deriving from other fires: it is an axial and principal fire because it is the beginning of other fires. The fire of Vesta is therefore "origin and support of everything". It is lighted through the friction of wood from an arbor felix (and with this wood it will be maintained alive) or through the sunrays. This fire is the symbol of the link of the Cultor and Cultrix to the Earth, as Sacred Manifestation. This is the reason why this is a round fire. It describes these foundamental principles: it cannot be used as a tool to send offerings to Gods and Goddesses. The fire of Vesta is not an ignis aspergendus: its smoke cannot send offerings. An ignis aspergendus is an oriented fire, thus a quadrangular fire at the base of a Templum. This kind of fire represents the Sky (Another World), while the fire of Vesta represents the Earth (This World).

Please note that the words Sky and Earth are not here used in a cosmological, physical, astronomical scientific or profane terms. They are used as Sacred Terms or components of an unique process of representation of the Universe. Sky and Earth, male and female, expansion and contraction, active and passive, inhaling and expiration... The roundness of the Earth, as principle of stability in everything, refers to a lack of orientation and the equivalence of the directions.

The fire of Vesta, a Female Fire by definition, has to be always included in any rite together with the fire for offering.

The Ignis Vestae, in the Aedes Vestae in Rome had a round shape, represented the permanence of the Roman State on the Earth and History. Not surprisingly only women could have care of such fire: the Vestals used this fire to prepare the mola, a flour used for the animal sacrifices  (im-molate).

Bread is sacred to Vesta.

Vesta had (and still has not) no anthropomorphic representation because her fire is the sole and perfect image of Vesta.

It is important to remind that, differently from the Greek tradition, Vesta is at the end of any rite. While citing Junus in the prima, the invocation begins, Vesta is the conclusion of any invocation. She is often invoked as Vesta Mater to highlight as Earth and infera Goddess, force tying the matter.

Vesta - Coesione

Religion or Knowledge?

During these recent months, in writing my posts in this blog, I've started in using the term "Traditional Roman spirituality" instead of "Traditional Roman Religion". This choice has been caused by the fact that in my opinion the word "Religion", in its modern sense, is unlikely to be effectively capable to describe the more authentic and deeper meaning of the Roman Via to the Divine (as system expressing the synthesis of the whole Ancient Spiritual Tradition).
When considering the Traditional Heritage, one can say that this system shows different extents and levels on the base of the personal disposition of who is approaching to it.

One may be thus legitimately satisfied in considering Gods and Goddesses through  their "functions", demanding support and favours. In this perspective, Mars becomes "the God of War", Venus the "Goddess of Beauty", Minerva "the Goddess of Wisdom", etc. In this expression, this system is likely to work as a real Religion where Gods and Goddesses punish evil people, provide gifts and so on. There's nothing bad in this: but this is Religion.

When we look at the works by the Emperor Julian or Proclus, Iamblichus or Plotinus within this perspective, often we cannot understand what they are discussing about. All this appears as a chaotic, irrational, absurd, annoying, out-of-date theoretical philosophical work. So this is the question one should make: what are these Magistri talking about?

If we overcome a popular and profane religious dimension, trying to "understand", it is possible to realize that Gods and Goddesses, and all the Forces expressing the Divine, are terms of a complex vocabulary describing a form of "Knowledge" or a description of the World, Nature and Universe (at micro and macro levels). This is what I refered to when for example I have recently discussed about Mercury or Apollo: they express extremely complex concepts about the (micro and macro) Universe.

In a very broad sense, we are dealing with an approach moving side by side to the scientific one. Modern Science is a "tool" useful to understand, widening rational knowledge which, through its theories and laws, provides us with a phenomenal description of the Reality and the Universe. But science is not an absolute interpretation key: it shows different perspectives and approaches. Moreover science is not the sole interpretative key. Just consider geometry. The common adopted geometry is the Euclidean Geometry which is one of the possible geometries. Non Euclidean geometries provide completely different scientific results, which are however considered absolutely valid. This is to say that, by changing basic principles and axioms, science may achieve completely different descriptions of the Nature and the World. It is important to remind also that science consider only the dimension of physical phenomena: science provides a description about how Nature works, but it says nothing about what Nature really is.

This perspective shift requires a different form of Knowledge capable to make the World visible through completely different eyes. It's like wearing some glasses to correct a severe myopia. The reality around us is always the same: I can observe it within a scientific, technical or technological point of view, but I can focus it also within a different visual perspective.

Vesta, Jupiter, Juno, Apollo, Mercury, through their "qualities", may "talk to me" about something extremely complex: they are interpretative keys, forms of understanding and knowledge, possible interpretation of the Universe.

Knowledge provided by the Roman Via is not however based on logical demonstrations (in this sense it is often considered as a "non-Knowledge"), but rather on transcendent experiences. Sometimes these experiences may drive to conclusions similar to the scientific ones because there's no conflict and opposition between them, but rather integration. Consider for example Pitagoras or Hypatia who integrated these visions about the Everything.
It is important to evidence this idea of "experience" because the Traditional Roman Spirituality, being a "practice", provides a Knowledge resulting from a direct and personal experience. Within this dimension there is no space for faith, belief or opinions, in a profane sense. Similarly it is not possible to use rationality or rational thinking in this Via to the Knowledge. This is a totally different level and stage. There are no prayers, no profane meditations, no expressions of passionate, emotional and sentimental devotion. The dimension of Religion has been definitively overcome.
This is a form of Knowledge essentially linked to Contemplation or a direct connection to the Divine. Contemplating means building in his/her own inner being (by the otium or the absence of any action and thought), the Temple as Sacred Sapce for the identification with the Divine. In this way, it is possible to understand the idea of Plotinus according to whom "we must imitate Gods and Goddesses": knowing is being, becoming an unique entity with no differences. We cannot achieve a God if we are unable to become that God.

A Cultor and a Cultrix are "those capable to see" with a direct experience of the Divine, without dogmas, theories, philosophies, doctrines: with a no (conventional) knowledge (unknowing).
Nonetheless, all this requires continuing committment and efforts: a great discipline is needed as form of learning. If we want "to know" (in this new meaning) we must change ourselves. This Change is the central core of the Roman Via to the Spiritual Growth: this explains why this is a "practice" as ethical system (involving everyday behaviors in every moment of the life) giving a deep print to the personal existence.
The Traditional Roman Spirituality is thus an experience which has to be lived even before a series of norms, rules and ceremonies. If so,  one could manage it with a deep study: in this way one might acquire perhaps only "erudition" however unable to provide any support in really understanding the Roman Spirituality. This inner change produces a "translation", a transfer of meanings, ideas, concepts. Archaeology, literature, philosophy, history or philology are not at issue because the level has completely changed and one might miss the point: this is a "living level".
If not undertaken, the lack of inner change will constraint us at the erudition sphere will facing also the risk to be blocked in a folkloristic (often ridiculous) stage. Rites have a value (with an instrumental role) when they can help us in providing us with a real knowledge, when they help us in change us, because they are part of a Method. And when rites are connected to their original value, it is possible to understand their sense and role: from the dancing of the Arvales to the rite of lighiting the fire of Vesta with the Sun rays.

Personally, I am just starting to understand just few very small pieces about all this: I'm moving in the darkness catching just a glimpse of it. I cannot grasp a lot yet. Even in this case the images of Mercury and Apollo  come to my mind...

This is a Via, a path, a long walking whose final destination is not surely the most relevant aspect of the issue...

Religione o Conoscenza?

September

The name of this month derives from the fact to be the 7th month in the ancient calendar, beginning on March, of King Numa.

September is dedicated to Jupiter (Iuppiter means "God Father") representing the sacralization of Authority in particular social and public authority, like his female polarity Juno.

Jupiter thus represents the State and the Family as social institutions. He represents, as cosmic energy, the sky, the rain, the snow, the lightning and the dew.

Sacred animals to Jupiter are the eagle and the vulture.
Sacred tree to Jupiter is the Oak: Jupiter may manifest himself through the whoosh of the oak's leaves

Jupiter has a long list of appellations (Indigitamenta) among which Lucetius (Light's Origin), Pluvius (raining), Fulgurator (Day Lightning) Summanus (Night Lightning), Pantocrator (Lord of anything), Trioculos (with three eyes), Prodigalis (prodigies Liberator), Penninus (Lord of peaks).

The main Jupiter's symbol is the Lightning.

The calendar for September mainly involves  great public festivals and rites such as the Ludi Magni the most important aristocracy's ludi.

As private rites we can however cite:

  • 10 september - Epulum Iovis: festivity celebrated to remind the fundation of the Temple of Iupiter in the Capitolium. It can be offered a rich meal citing also the Deities of the first triad (Mars and Quirinus) and the second triad (Minerua and Juno)
  • 20 september - Romolus' Dies Natalis:  this day can be celebrated with a domestic rite offering figs.
  • 26 september - Venus Genitrix: this day is dedicated to Venus as mother of the entire roman people and defender of the Cultores worldwide
  • 27 september - Fortuna Redux: "she bringing home" is celebrated for those friends and relatives living far away and to favor a safe journey back home.

Settembre

Come festività private possiamo ricordare tuttavia:

The Gods' and Goddesses' "Functions"

August is a month highly permeated by the energy of Diana: about this Goddess I have written a specific, even if rather brief  post

As I have already done in other occasions, I described in this post the characteristics of this Goddess and the modality through which it is possible to identify her. My personal effort is to direct this work of "identification" and description, in the case of Diana as well as for other Deities, to evidencing Gods and Goddesses as "modality of representation of complex forms of Knowledge" about the Nature and the Universe and, finally, about ouselves.

Who has read this blog with a minimal interest probably has noticed that I have always avoided the use of profane terms such as "God of..." or "Goddes of...". In brief, I have tried to help the reader in approaching a vision about Gods and Goddesses capable to overcome the "functional" perspective. In my personal view, opting for the idea to approach and live the Deities on the base of their supposed "functions" is the most profane way one can choose.

When we imagine to stay in contact with the Deities on the base of these functions, materialized in a variety of attributes (avenger, judge, protector, etc.) we pour on Gods/Goddesses our needs and our emotional states. We assign on some psychological imagines of Gods and Goddesses our "agitation". I frequently find this way of thinking the Divine Dimension in many typical manifestations of the most profane monoteism, revealing only a psychological projection of an agitated, upset and confused Ego which not rarely degenerates in an obtuse and stupid fanaticism.

There is another and higher way to live the Deities acoording to the Roman Spiritual Tradition. When our souls are inspired by an authentic Virtus, thus a calm, serene and immbile inner Force, we live the Divine Dimension with a calm and serene "detachment" and indifference (from passions, devotion and temporary feelings) capable to render our spiritual experiences indpependent from simple cultural and social factors. We can live the Deities in their plain and simple "nudity" (numen), freed by mediations because we perceive their independance by the rational thought.

We can therefore better understand the idea of Plotinus: he considers the most important sense and Nature of Gods and Goddesses strictly linked to the "Void" which should fill also our spirit.

The main goal of any spiritual exercise and practice should be the possibiity to perceive this "Void" being filled by a serene lightness, a calm immobility.

August

The original name of this month is Sextilis because it was the 6th month in the Ancient Calendar. Then it was named Augustus in honor of the Emperor Augustus.

The name "Augustus" is avery complex term: just thinking to the fact that the prefix "aug" connotates also names like "augur" or "augurium". In any case it evidences a polarization of energy.
This month is dedicated to harvest, storage and conservation (in a broader sense).

In particular August is dedicated to the Goddess Diana or the female polarity of Apollo.

Diana is defined as "Always Distant": she is a non-urban Goddess because she represents the sacralization of woods, forrests and wild places.

Her frantic dance, reserved only to women, is named "Ridda".

During the day Diana protects wild animals preserving their lives; during the night she hunts them giving them Death. In this way Diana embodies both Life and Death as deriving from an unique source.

Sacred animals to Diana are: lion, bear, deer, quail and hunting dog.

As Apollo is represented by the Sun, Diana is represented by the Moon. Her main symbol is the Bow representing the crescent moon and the "wild weapon".

Agosto

Concentration

Concentration is one of the fundamental elements for the execution of any spiritual exercise: it is also a fundamental factor for the otium

It is essential however to understand what the concept of concentration really means and implies

It is important to evidence that concentration, within the Traditional Roman Spirituality, has nothing to share with any kind of "thinking", mental reflection and above all with any kind of prayer in profane, sentimental and devotional terms.

Concentration is basically a tool: it implies a "movement towards the Centre (Heart)", a deep inner meditation and focus, a total spiritual absorption, a feeling of "implosion". Concentration implies the capability to manage a quiet inner force, a inner peace to reach the Centre, perceiving the Real Heart. This Centre is immobile, calm, fixed, stable while everything around it is moving under agitation. In the status of Real Concentration nothing can worry us, nothing can disturb or distract us.

Concentration and Silence, in sacred and divination terms, drive us to the "Clear Vision", to the Con-Templation (Inner Templum), abandoning senses without repudiate them, but moving to a totally superior level.

Concentrazione

Tips of Ancient Wisdom - 11

"Not to be told; not to be written": in our writing and telling we are but urging towards it: out of discussion we call to vision: to those desiring to see, we point the path; our teaching is of the road and the travelling; the seeing must be the very act of one that has made this choice.

Plotinus, Enneads, 6,9,4, 15-16

July - Apollo

The original name of this month was Quintilis because it was the fifth month in the ancient calendar of King Numa. Then it was named Julius in honour of Julius Caesar.

This month is dedicated to Apollo (male polarity): this is thus a period dedicated to transcendence, wisdom, medicine, music and poetry. Apollo is associated to the Sun and to "what exists without depending on the world's events" being also defined as "who stands aside", "the Abstract" or "Always Distant".

Sacred animals to Apollo are: swan, wolf, deer and, above all, dolphin.
Sacred plants and trees are: cypress, hyacinth and laurel.

Ludi Saeculares were dedicated to Apollo (and to Diana - his female polarity): these games were held in Rome every 100 years.
---------
It is always important to remind that the ancient sacred calendar provide us with a sort of compass to direct us along the Sacred Time and its forces and energies. We may thus say that this period of the year is highly permeated by the energy of Apollo, an extremely complex God. For this reason it think it could be useful, for a Cultrix and a Cultor, to know the basic concepts and principles necessary to identify his characteristics and to understand his role and meaning. Of course the terms and concepts expressed below have to be intented in a non-profane perspective.

Apollo is associated to the Sun (Helios), to be intented as Divine entity rather than an astronomical entity, thus being an emanation of this Great Divine Force.
"Apollo dwells with Helios sharing the same semplicity of thoughts, immutable in substance and unvarying his activity". (Emperor Julian, Hymn to King Helios, 22)

Apollo in particular is the pulsating of the Sun Rays. He is "Pure Light" being defined as "shining", "brillant", "clear". His main symbol is the Lyre to represent the Celestial Harmony. He brings also the arrows symbolizing the creative and destructive force of the Sun Rays.

The name of this God is defined as a "well tuned and harmonized name" evidencing the link with Music. Of course Music has to be intented here as the Universal and Cosmic harmonized sound rather than the common expression of music. This Music in fact results from the Universe's movement and action. Apollo provides the Universe with order and "measure" cancelling any dissonance. He is placed in the Center as an "orchestra leader" coordinating the Cosmic Music and acting as a Balance Point. According to the Chaldea Order, Apollo is placed in the balance point among the nine spheres: these spheres dance in harmony around the Sun. The harmonia mundi results from the totality of the sounds and singing deriving from all these spheres (universitas sonorum) within the whole Cosmic structure of the Universe.

Apollo is surrounded by the Muses "singing for him", by the seven planets and the fixed sphere. The Muses are the divine expression of the Thought's Activity: they are the Universe's singing. Apollo and the Muses are those forces directing the Universe (Apollon Musagète - directing the Muses). He is the Muses' unifying element, Lord of the Total Harmony,  a force connecting different elements at the base of this Cosmic Harmony.

Apollo has the power to render "the entire intellectual substance as a whole because he joins the extremes in an unique and identical reality" (Emperor Julian, Hymn to King Helios, 22)

His rays show a dancing pace, they are pure, they provide force to the "links": not accidentally, with his rays the Vestals ignited the Sacred Fire of Vesta (Apollo provides Vesta with Energy - The Solar-Cosmic Force ignites the "Links"- the "Relations" between elements which otherwise are sterile).

As already mentioned, his sacred plant is the laurel because this plant is "full of fire" being capable to keep the negative daemons away. Furthermore, Tradition indicates that the laurel is a "loquacious plant when burning" evidencing the prophetic power expressed by Apollo. Pythis in Delphi held a branch of laurel in a hand, chewing the laurel leaves and inhaling the smoke from the burning leaves.  A crakling laurel manifests the Apollo's oracle power who gives oracles near this plant.

The laurel is also an important plant in Theurgy, for purification and curative practices.

Apollo has the power to remove Evil, in a very broad sense: Asclepius is the Apollo representation as The Medicine. In this case, he has a stick, symbolizing the support for the sick persons, around which a snake is clung as symbol of body and soul salvation. Being connected to the Sun Rays, Apollo relieves from deseases, purifies the body and restores harmony to the body. A physical or a psychic desease is symptom of a "dis-order", "disgregation", "dis-harmony". The heat of the Sun Rays restores the "equilibrium", the "balance". Apollo is a curative force not only in physical terms because he restores balance to the soul conveying the Rays coming from the Inner Sun.

Everyone of us has inside his/her deeper substance that matter deriving from the Cosmic energy, the energy  of the Sun and the other stars. Even Science has confirmed that we are made of Cosmic Matter. we are made of Light. In our rational part a Sun Ray shines thanks to Apollo. If we will be capable to understand and codify the "Apollo's Message", we have the possibility to take part of the "Knowledge" becoming Solar Women and Men or Perfect Women and Men, thus igniting this Sun Ray hidden inside us and turning on this Light inside us. The so-called common people are just purely and solely rational individuals who however still "ignore", there is no light inside them.

I have just cited minimal, superficial and brief considerations. Nonetheless, on the base of this, can we define these issues as a component of a Religion according to a profane, devotional sense? Maybe we are dealing with something more complex and deeper....

Luglio - Apollo

Traditional Symbols: the Pine Cone

The Pine Cone is one of the most frequent, and  in the same time, most complex symbols we can find in the Traditional Roman Spirituality.

It is a very complex symbol because expressing forces and  a  symbolism extremely difficult and hermetic. In this post I will provide some biref details just to put the Cultor and the Cultrix in the condition to acknowledge its basic value and meaning. Everyone is free to study its deeper meaning if interested in this issue.

First of all it is extremely important to highlight that the Pine Cone is never - I repeat - never a decorative element: it is rather a tool to communicate about two Deities: Cybele and Dyonisus.

With regards to Cybele, the Pine Cone describes the idea of fecundity, maturation and "reproduction" (even in hermetic sense). It is the symbol that expresses in the most complete way the chthonic feminine energy, "The Feminine Power". The Pine Cone is often represented together with one or more snakes not only to evidence its chthonic aspect, but to underline how this feminine force unravels itself as a snake. We can find similar representations in other cultures: we may say that the Pine Cone is the Roman representation of the Shakti and the snake describes how the Shakti unravens itself like a snake.

Similarly, the Pine Cone is linked to Dyonisus in his representation as Dyonisus-Zagreus (who pulls to pieces). The Pine Cone, for its typicals structure, is the symbol of this potential "splitting" from which it is possible to obtain feed and fecundity (the pine nuts - edible seeds). Even in this case, we are dealing with a chthonic and female force which in the past involved an orgiastic cult. This manifestation of Dyonisus as Zagreus is linked to Cybele (deriving from the union between Cronus and Cybele/Rhea) and to the symbol of the snake. Just think about the Dyonisus axial symbol of the Thyrsus having a Pine Cone over the top around which a snake is clung

The Pine Cone therefore communicates the Feminine Power which can become an extremely powerful energy. About this, and just not to forget it, I would like to mention that the christian religion - in the past as today - is perfectly aware about the "pagan" symbolism of the Pine Cone. I mention, just as an example, the case of the Great Pine Cone of Cybele (not accidentaly accompanied by two peacocks) removed from its original place (the great sanctuary of Cybele near the Pantheon), put in the Vatican and extinguished there (being only a decoration). Above all it is important to remind the case of the pope tiara which has the Pine Cone's shape. Both cases are clear examples about the effort made by the christian religion to take the complete control over the feminine power-energy-force. Do not forget that s.peter in Rome has been built (not accidentally) over a Cybele Temple.

The Pine Cone is also named " The Zagreus' Heart": this definition open the way to an even more complex symbology. As in the case of the Egg, the Pine Cone represents the "Heart of the World":, the "Heart of the Universe", the Cave as both cosmic and chthonic representation: it is a symbol of the Centre. Not accidentally many omphalos and Goddesses are represented as cone shaped stones.

Having a typical structure and shape, the Pine Cone is the symbol of the Cosmos in its initial differentiation phase (with its constitutive elements) just after the Chaos. It describes the Centre's splitting, a shape where the directions in the space have not the same uniform function. Like an ellipse, the Pine Cone shows two focuses, two centres expressing the two fundamental polarities.

The Pine Cone is basically the symbol of the the conclusion of the personal spiritual development: moving from the status of "sleep" (at the base of the vertebral column), to "germination", to the "rebirth - second birth" (the Heart - the Pine Cone): again this spiritual process is clearly and entirely described by the Thyrsus.

Further descriptions of the symbolic value of the Pine Cone involve hermetic and initiation implications: too difficult and too complex to be described here...
