The
original name of this month was Quintilis because it was the fifth
month in the ancient calendar of King Numa. Then it was named Julius in
honour of Julius Caesar.
This month is dedicated to Apollo (male polarity): this is thus a period dedicated to transcendence, wisdom, medicine, music and poetry. Apollo is associated to the Sun and to "what exists without depending on the world's events" being also defined as "who stands aside", "the Abstract" or "Always Distant".
Sacred animals to Apollo are: swan, wolf, deer and, above all, dolphin.
Sacred plants and trees are: cypress, hyacinth and laurel.
Ludi Saeculares were dedicated to Apollo (and to Diana - his female polarity): these games were held in Rome every 100 years.

It is always important to remind that the ancient sacred calendar provide us with a sort of compass to direct us along the Sacred Time and its forces and energies. We may thus say that this period of the year is highly permeated by the energy of Apollo, an extremely complex God. For this reason it think it could be useful, for a Cultrix and a Cultor, to know the basic concepts and principles necessary to identify his characteristics and to understand his role and meaning. Of course the terms and concepts expressed below have to be intented in a non-profane perspective.
Apollo is associated to the Sun (Helios), to be intented as Divine entity rather than an astronomical entity, thus being an emanation of this Great Divine Force.
"Apollo dwells with Helios sharing the same semplicity of thoughts, immutable in substance and unvarying his activity". (Emperor Julian, Hymn to King Helios, 22)
Apollo in particular is the pulsating of the Sun Rays. He is "Pure Light" being defined as "shining", "brillant", "clear". His main symbol is the Lyre to represent the Celestial Harmony. He brings also the arrows symbolizing the creative and destructive force of the Sun Rays.
The name of this God is defined as a "well tuned and harmonized name" evidencing the link with Music. Of course Music has to be intented here as the Universal and Cosmic harmonized sound rather than the common expression of music. This Music in fact results from the Universe's movement and action. Apollo provides the Universe with order and "measure" cancelling any dissonance. He is placed in the Center as an "orchestra leader" coordinating the Cosmic Music and acting as a Balance Point. According to the Chaldea Order, Apollo is placed in the balance point among the nine spheres: these spheres dance in harmony around the Sun. The harmonia mundi results from the totality of the sounds and singing deriving from all these spheres (universitas sonorum) within the whole Cosmic structure of the Universe.
Apollo is surrounded by the Muses "singing for him", by the seven planets and the fixed sphere. The Muses are the divine expression of the Thought's Activity: they are the Universe's singing. Apollo and the Muses are those forces directing the Universe (Apollon Musagète - directing the Muses). He is the Muses' unifying element, Lord of the Total Harmony, a force connecting different elements at the base of this Cosmic Harmony.
Apollo has the power to render "the entire intellectual substance as a whole because he joins the extremes in an unique and identical reality" (Emperor Julian, Hymn to King Helios, 22)
His rays show a dancing pace, they are pure, they provide force to the "links": not accidentally, with his rays the Vestals ignited the Sacred Fire of Vesta (Apollo provides Vesta with Energy - The Solar-Cosmic Force ignites the "Links"- the "Relations" between elements which otherwise are sterile).
As already mentioned, his sacred plant is the laurel because this plant is "full of fire" being capable to keep the negative daemons away. Furthermore, Tradition indicates that the laurel is a "loquacious plant when burning" evidencing the prophetic power expressed by Apollo. Pythis in Delphi held a branch of laurel in a hand, chewing the laurel leaves and inhaling the smoke from the burning leaves. A crakling laurel manifests the Apollo's oracle power who gives oracles near this plant.
The laurel is also an important plant in Theurgy, for purification and curative practices.
Apollo has the power to remove Evil, in a very broad sense: Asclepius is the Apollo representation as The Medicine. In this case, he has a stick, symbolizing the support for the sick persons, around which a snake is clung as symbol of body and soul salvation. Being connected to the Sun Rays, Apollo relieves from deseases, purifies the body and restores harmony to the body. A physical or a psychic desease is symptom of a "dis-order", "disgregation", "dis-harmony". The heat of the Sun Rays restores the "equilibrium", the "balance". Apollo is a curative force not only in physical terms because he restores balance to the soul conveying the Rays coming from the Inner Sun.
Everyone of us has inside his/her deeper substance that matter deriving from the Cosmic energy, the energy of the Sun and the other stars. Even Science has confirmed that we are made of Cosmic Matter. we are made of Light. In our rational part a Sun Ray shines thanks to Apollo. If we will be capable to understand and codify the "Apollo's Message", we have the possibility to take part of the "Knowledge" becoming Solar Women and Men or Perfect Women and Men, thus igniting this Sun Ray hidden inside us and turning on this Light inside us. The so-called common people are just purely and solely rational individuals who however still "ignore", there is no light inside them.
I have just cited minimal, superficial and brief considerations. Nonetheless, on the base of this, can we define these issues as a component of a Religion according to a profane, devotional sense? Maybe we are dealing with something more complex and deeper....
