When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

April the 21st: Dies Natalis Romae - Palilia - Beginnings

The day of April 21st is dedicated to the foundation of Rome and to the Ancient Goddess of Pale. In many blogs there are detailed hystorical descriptions about these importatn festivals. I have written something about it  here.

It seems to me quite useless to add something else to this here also because in this blog I'm trying to dismiss, whenever possible, the hystorical rhetoric and to reconstructionism. I have not appreciated also the fact that in Rome these ceremonies have been quite essentially biased on costume parades. Too much folklore; this is a carnival party. That's all.

During a day like this a Cultor and a Cultrix should wonder what these festivities mean for them today, what meaning and sense these festivities may have today wondering also about the value we can assign today to these festivals: which kind of contribution can these festivals provide to our spirituality within the Traditional Roman Religion today? I don't think that insisting on the purification of flocks can be useful or understandable for us (except for someone involved in sheep or livestock breeding).

Anyway. I ask to mayself how it can be possible to spiritually live this day and how this day can contribute to my spirituality for the days to come.

I think that the Traditional Roman Religion today, among others, is a kind of deep spirituality linked to the cult (practice) of the Ancestors. Role and meaning of Ancestors (also as metaphysical concept) strongly inspire this kind of Credo.

The foundation of Rome (its myth and the festivity dedicated to an ancient Goddess) therefore recalls an idea of Ancestors, an idea of Beginning, Origin, the birth of a Religious Tradition. This day evokes a type of primordial humankind where Life is sacred, men and women are strctly close to Gods and Goddesses (in a very broad sense).

We thus remind a Time when every action, gesture, thought were sacred. This is a Time when the urban space where men and women live is co-shared with Gods and Goddesses. Every man and woman are priest and priestess because living is a sacred action, the city-village is a Temple, every form and expression of the Reality reveals and discloses the Divine Presence. And men and women can easily perceive the sacred Breath (flamen) of this Divine Presence.

In this primal status there is a pure, immediate, direct, plain elementarity: what is immensely great is like what is immensely small. Above and below are the same.

I think that in this day (rather than dressing masks) it should be better to direct our thoughts toward this concept of primal status which the idea of Ancestors and their cult materialize. We have to regain this deep sense and meaning connected to these festivals, the real idea of Ancestors (a concept we have completely lost) which must inspire our everyday life.

We should daily reflect about these principles.

Love

April is, as surely well known, entirely devoted to Venus. This Goddess is  linked to Love, a concept which, of course, has not to be intended in a profane sense.

Love linked to the Divine energy of Venus must be considered as Prime Cause, as a force placed at the origin of the matter and the organization of Life. Love/Venus is also the origin of pure feelings.

Love is a Force pushing towards Beauty, in particular the "Hidden Beauty"  (occultum formosum) of which the perceivable beauty is only the most superficial aspect.

The Green Path, the "Hidden Beauty", Water, Life, First Cause, The Origin of Everything; the meanings and the symbolic value of Love (as a Force tending to Life) are extremely complex. However all this can be useful to understand why Rome, both as material and immaterial space) has been founded in this particular period of the sacred year and why Rome (and its name) are connected to Venus.

Amore

Formal Cult, Inner Cult

I have decided to write this post about the "Cult" after having followed many discussions about this issue in many blogs. In particular I'd like to reflect about this idea also considering the way through which many italian neo-pagan associations tend to discuss this topic.

The word "Cult" and its meaning derive from the concept of "ColereDeos/Deas". This is a very complex concept and its complexity derives also by the fact that in the modern languages there are no adequate words useful to correctly describe its inner sense and meaning. We have to use symbols or verbal imageries (sometimes with a strong poetic value) in the effort to describe its meaning.

Of course, I've got no intention to discuss here the concept of "Colere Deos/Deas" (some personal considerations about it can be found here). It is important to highlight however that Cult is not a "way", a "tool", " a "goal": Cult is essentially a "practice".

For this reason, the idea of Cult is totally different from the idea of "preyer" in a conventional and profane sense: Cult has no link with the possibility to satisfy a desire, there is nothing to request, nobody is implored.

Nonetheless, above all many reconstructionist associations tend to identify the Cult (and the related rites) through very detailed instructions to be carefully followed. Sometimes they are inspired to a such a formal strictness to exclude those considered not enough adherent to these rules. It means that an exaggerated importance is given solely to the formal side of the Cult:  they are forgetting the essence of the Traditional Cult and the rites.

I believe that establishing a personal Cult following, in an obtuse way, a structure of rigid rules is a great mistake. Similarly I think that such approach shows that the real essence of the Traditional Roman Cult has been lost or at least misunderstood.

It's clear enough that following certain indications, at the base of a Cult's structure, is surely fundamental to make this Cult a "Via". These indications remain critical elements because they compose our "compass" to direct us during our walking along the "path": we find them in our rites and in the modalities through which we approach the Divine and how we can acknowledge Gods and Goddesses in the World.

It is thus important to give the right role and value to the Formal Cult materialized into these rites. Similarly, it is however important not to forget that another Cult may emerge beyond the formal rites, a Cult appearing in the everyday life. Having a meal, our relations in the family and with friends, our social relations, how we express our civil and political duties, our relations with the natural environment: all this is part of the Cult. It is essential not to forget it.

The Traditional Roman Religion ripudiates violence, intolerance, fanaticism, stupidity, discrimination. These are typical features of the most dangerous follies of the spirit: greed and rage. It is not possible to follow the Via without this necessary spiritual honesty: maybe someone will play acting like a Roman, but surely he/she is not practicing the Cult.

When we have a profund and sound Fides, a clear awareness, a quiet force inspiring us, then our Inner Cult will fill every activity of our life, even those not directly involved with formal rites. It is not a problem of faith: it important to stop distinguishing formal rites from everyday activities. Our entire life may become a liturgy.

A strong Inner Cult can give a sense and value to formal rites as well as to any action we make in our everyday life. Some time ago I wrote to a Cultor that the first Lararium we have to built is inside our heart. Otherwise we will remain definitively blocked in a folkloristic dimension.

No morbose devotion, suggestion, humiliation are necessary to achieve such a result. it is important to be able to make our inner voice audible and in harmony with the Gods' and Goddesses' voices within an inner silence. This inner peace and immobility, this status of calmness, is a specific experience varying from person to person having however the power to direct the individual action. It is very difficult to put in practice this condition as well as awakening the personal Inner Cult: it is impossible to learn it from books. It is necessary high perseverance and a magister's support.

The most important thing however is, in rituals as well as in everyday life to create, achieve and maintain a condition of "personal inner peace" in any condition we are. Surely this is a good start.

Culto Interiore, Culto Esteriore

Orphic Hymn to Aphrodite - Venus

Aetherial, Illustrious, Laughing Queen, Born of the Sea and Lover of the Night,
Mother of Longing, All-Connecting, who joins the world in harmony,
All things spring from You, Oh Divine Power.
The Triple Fates are ruled by Your decree,
All the works of craft and love yield to Your hand,
With a smile, Oh Aphrodite, you sway the all-encircling heavens, the fruitful Earth and the Storming Oceans.
All obey You, all are awed by You.
Companion of the Brumal God,
Beautiful Goddess of Marriage, Mother of Love, Lover of the Banquet,
Source of Persuasion who grants secret favors, Illustrious born, seen and unseen,
Gentle Lover, Lupercal, who smiles upon mortals,
Prolific, Most-Desired, Life-Giver, Kind Goddess wielder of the scepter of all the Immortals, You bind mortals and every tribe of beasts in magic chains of mad desire.
Come, Lovely Cyprian, and bless these rites, Whether radiant in the heavens,Or presiding in the temples of Syria,
Guiding Your golden chariot over the sacred floods of Egypt,
Or dancing on the azure shores by billowing seas, with circling choirs of mortals, and beauteous Nymphs with cerulean eyes,
Or riding out along the dusty banks renowned of old,
Or if in Cyprus with Your fair Mother, where married women yearly come to praise You, and the pure virgins sing hymns to You and to Adonis,
Come, Divine Union, for You I call with holy, reverent mind.

sui lidi sabbiosi della riva con salto leggero;

April - Venus

April is a month enterely dedicated to Nature and to Nature's Beauty. Many Goddesses are celebrated during this month above all Venus.

Venus is the sacralization of Beauty: in particular she is "The Revealed and Disclosed Beauty".
Her sacred trees are: cherry tree, myrtle, daisy, rose, lime and apple tree.
Her sacred animals are: stork, sparrow, frog, dolphin, swan, hare, turtle and dove.

A Venus' fundamental symbol is the shell.

Venus is also identified as:
  • Venere Pandemia: physical love
  • Venere Urania: spiritual love
  • Venere Murcia: she-mitigating
  • Venere Verticordia: passion

Venus is symbolized by a cone dark stone.

Other important Gods/Goddesses celebrated in April are:
  • Ceres: "the nuorishing land". She is also named "Flavia" (blonde, clear), "frugifera" (giving fruits), she is the sacred symbol of corn cultivation. Spike, poppy, pig and heifer are sacred to Ceres.
  • Tellus: the Earth, symbol of stability and solidity (Tellus Stabilita), she-generating energy. She is represented surrounded by children. Sacred animal: veal
  • Pale: ancient Goddess of pastures and herds.
  • Robigo: "Rust". Negative God provoking inactivity and many plant, animal and human deseases.
  • Flora: Goddess of Flowers. She is the symbol of spring. Seeds and honey are sacred to Flora. She is represented by a wicker basket full of flowers she will put on trees.
______

It is possible to provide some brief and simple citations about a deeper meaning and sense of the cult and symbology of Venus.
Venus represents the Generating Force hidden inside Nature. Venus contains in the same time Life and Death: she is defined also "mortis et vitae locus".
Venus symbolizes, in hermetic terms, the passivity, contraction, the Original Primigenial Force, the "Wet Path", "the Green Path", copper. the lumbar region.

Venus is also somehow linked to the secret name of Rome.

 The roman grafito in Pompeii
The importance of the cult of Venus in Rome is extremely well known and the realtion between the name of Rome and Venus is also evidenced by the famous grafito in Pompeii.

Aprile - Venere

Venere viene indentificata come:
  • Venere Pandemia: amore fisico
  • Venere Urania: amore spirituale

Tips of ancient wisdom - 9

Cicero, Tusconalane Disputationes, I,44

"We shall certainly be happy when, being emancipated from that body, we at the same time get rid of these desires and this rivalry. And that which we do at present, when, dismissing all other cares, we curiously examine and look into anything, we shall then do with greater freedom; and we shall employ ourselves entirely in the contemplation and examination of things; because there is naturally in our minds a certain insatiable desire to know the truth"

Pillole di saggezza antica - 9

Cicero, Tusconalane Disputationes, I,44

Liber/Libera

March 17 is a day dedicated to Liber/Libera with the festivities of Liberalia

In this post I do not want to describe the characteristics of this public cult in the past (at present very difficult to perform in its original expression): I'd rather prefer to provide some brief consideration useful (I hope) both for an eventual private cult and for the understanding of some related implications and meanings which can help us to maintain our personal status of "awakening" and "awareness".

Liber and Libera  are fecundity natural forces (not accidentally cited during this month dedicated to fecundanting Mars), above all a fecundity linked to wild Nature particularly active in the forests; they are mainly active during the transition or passage periods such as Spring and Autumn.

Liber in particular is the trees' cortex, above all the cortex richer of life and sap connecting the leaves to the roots.  Liber/Libera are "Deities of the Sap", "The plants' blood". They are underground forces (included in the triad Ceres-Liber-Libera) which every spring emerge from the ground to resuscitate plants and trees.

They are symbolized by the Ivy, a plant  living drawing sap from trees.

Thanks ot these forces, trees can be covered by leaves and then by flowers. Liber/Libera are forces of the Sap, pollen and nectar as well as any kind of lymph: for men and women, Liber/Libera are linked to the maturity of sex organs and the related fluids as tools to animate Nature

We can use this Ode by Horace as invocation to Liber/Libera

Bacchus on the far-off rocky hills, teaching
his chants -- you who are still to come, believe me --
I saw him and his student Nymphs and
goat-footed Satyrs and their pointed ears.
Euhoë! -- my soul trembles with that moment's fear,
Bacchus possesses my breast and I madly
rejoice. Euhoë!, spare me, Liber,
spare me, god of the fearful rod of power.

I must celebrate your inexhaustible
revelers, and the fountains of wine and full
rivers of milk, and mirror in song
honey dripping from the hollows of trees...

Horace, Ode 2.19

Liber/Libera

risparmiami, temibile col tuo potente tirso.
Ora solo mi è lecito cantare
le Tiadi infaticabili,
di vino le sorgenti ed i ruscelli
straripanti di latte
e raccontare come il miele scorre
fuori dai cavi tronchi..
Orazio, Odi, 2/19

Silence

In this blog I have often cited "silence" as critical element within the Traditional Roman Religion both as subject in specific spiritual exercises and in its deeper symbolic role also when adopted in given invocation modalities. I have mentioned that invocations can be performed aloud, whispering (murmur), in an absolute silence: these different modalities refer to different types of creating a Divine Contact. Similarly I have mentioned silence related to Mens and Vox.

In a common and profane meaning, silence corresponds to an idea of "concealing" or "stop talking". Silence in this way is likely to be opposed only to Vox or the verbal articulation and communication of thoughts.
The Traditional Roman Religion provides us with a deeper and more complex perspective to understand the real value, role, sense and meaning of silence. As profane silence implies a stop talking, sacred silence implies the capability to "stop thinking" or blocking Mens in a condition of pure calm and spiritual rest. It involves the achievement of a status of spiritual otium. As profane silence is used to stop the instictive and chaotic speaking, similarly sacred silence is used to stop the chaotic sequence of thoughts: this is the "inner silence" or "pax profunda".

The possibilities to achieve such condition of profound silence depends on the individual capability of concentration: this form of concentration has nothing in common with the common idea of concentration. I will describe in the future this idea in a next post.

Silenzio

Vitis - Discipline

In a previous post I mentioned the meaning of the baculum as symbol and tool typical of a Cultrix/Cultor. Baculum represents a sort of first basic "key"  related to a first "Sigillum - Seal" linked to Fides (Trust). Without baculum-Fides (towards Gods/Goddesses) we have no support and, during our walking along the Via, we may fall and fail.

In this post I would like to provide some brief indications  about a second level tool and symbol acting as "key" for a second Seal. I'm talking about the vitis: it is a typical symbol of a Mater/Pater Familias or the second stage after the Cultrix/Cultor.

Vitis in the past was a stick made of wood from grapevine the centurion used to inflict corporal punishments to the indisciplinated legionaries. In the same way, a mater/pater familias used a vitis to punish their daughters and sons. Vitis is a flexible stick: it can be bent but it never breaks down like a whip

It is clear enough that today one cannot imagine to use a vitis as a corporal punishment tool. Nonetheless, it is still representing, as in the past, Discipline. While in the past vitis was used to impose discipline over other people, today a pater/mater familias use a vitis as symbol of their personal discipline.

How can a father/mother be a positive example or a model for their children without conforming to a code based on a personal discipline?

Personal discipline is the precondition to overcome the worst spiritual pathologies for a man/woman: greed and rage. Overcoming greed and rage implies the capability to block the worst instincts in the common man/woman. Practicing personal discipline means overcoming the limits of the Ego, overcoming the inner Chaos and achieve a condition of calmness and impassivity.

The Baculum-Fides provides us with a support to undertake the Via: similarly the Vitis-Discipline provides us with the strength and courage to proceed in the Via.

It is important to note that Discipline is not synonym of an absolute rigor and rigidity in behaviour. On the contrary, it means living in simplicity and mental presence because it implies the achievement of "calmness" practicing a quiet force. Personal discipline basically is related to the 5 vowes keeping a constant personal control. Becoming aware of what we are doing is a first step to practice personal discipline, overcoming anxiety and illusions.

Vitis has also a very complex symbolism about which I describe just few brief considerations.

The log of the grapevine is clutched like a snake around a support (note the symbols of the snake and the axis) showing the shape of a spiral. The cortex of the grapevine itself has the drawing of a spiral. On the one hand Discipline is a unraveling force with the movement of a spiral. On the other hand the grapevine, with its spirals, is the symbol of "rise", "ascension", "spiritual elevation": we can find this symbolism also in the "twisted columns". These columns, represents the Path and the "Spiral of Smoke" raising towards the Sky concretely drawing the " Spiritual Elevation Path".

Thanks to the personal discipline it is possible to activate this spiral process symbolizing the continuity among different manifestations of the Being placed on different and overlapping existentials plans as a possibility to overcome the status of "common man/woman"

Vitis - Disciplina

March

After having celebrated the Februalia as final rite of purification during the last day of February, on March the 1st the Sacred Year begins.

March is thus a very important month characterized by many celebrations.

March is enterely dedicated to Life and Nature re-birth in all their expressions. This month is dedicated to the generating forces converging into two polatiries: Mars (Male Polarity) and Cybele (Female Polarity)

Mars - usually wrongly labelled only as the God of War - is the "He-generating". He is symbolically Romolus' and Remus' father being in this way Father of the Roman People. Mars is the Fecundating Male Energy, expanding active energy: he-fecundating Earth, Plants, Flowers, Fields, etc. He is defined as Marmor (shining, gleaming) but more frequently as Marmar (Reproductive Force of the Nature) or Gradivus (Fecundating Vegetation).

Sacred plants to Mars are: figtree and oak. Sacred animals are: wolf, horse and woodpecker.

If Janus is the sacralization of the "beginnings", Mars is the sacralization of the "activity" and "things' blossoming". To Mars are dedicated the "Sacrae Prima-verae" of youth who entered the adult life as foundators and fecundators.
His sacred symbol is a Spear.

The Mars antique female polarity is Nerio but in the time course she tended to have a smaller and smaller importance.

Cybele is the female polarity of fecundity (She-Fecundating). Cybele is by definition the Great Mather embracing all the Goddesses having specific characteristics. In the same time she is associated to the main Goddesses: Iuno, Vesta, Tellus, Bona Dea, Maia, Gaia, Flora, Ceres, Pomona, etc.

Cybele is the perennial energy of the Nature renewal. She is the Lady of the Plants: pine, boxtree and oak are sacred plants to Cybele. She is also the Lady of the Animals. Humans have learnt from her how to cultivate corn and cereals.

Cybele's sacred symbols are: the Tower and the Lion.
