When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

February

February  is dedicated to purification. During this month, festivities are focused on the memory of defuncts, magical animals, peaceful activities and sleeping. Any tool used for purification is named februum.

It is important to remind that the traditional year will begin on March: thus purification during February is necessary to prepare the beginning of the new year.

This month is dedicated to Februus and Februa (male and feminine numen of "The Purifying") who, being positive energies, are opposed to Febris (The Fever), negative energy.

The festivities during February are thus linked to purification activities (for the body, spirit, sites, objects, etc.)

February the 1st - Amburbium: festivity for the purification of villages and cities and their public sites through a circular procession holding a februum (a purification tool). The same ceremony can be applied for home purification.

This kind of public purification rite is not at present viable, but a private version of Amburbium can be made to purify our private space at home. The Amburbium can be made walking outside around the house (or, when not possible, inside the house) holding in the left hand a lituus (or a baculum) and offering to Februus/Februa milk, wine and water.

In these days of purification, it's better to refrain from eating meat and drinking alcohols and liquors. When possible it's good to devote time to reflections and meditation. This purification process should be considered of sort of therapy of purification essentially based on the following principles:
  • spiritual research
  • deep personal introspection
  • reading
  • silence
  • listening
  • deep attention
  • self control
  • indifference towards not important things and topics
I'd like to cite these words by G. Friedmann: "Do your own flight every day! At least just one moment which can be brief but intense. Everyday a spiritual exercise, alone or with another person desiring personal improving. Escaping the idea of duration and time. Trying to eliminate passions, vanity, fame. Avoiding gossip, pity and hate. Loving the entire community of free men/women. Becoming eternal, overcoming personal limits".

I have prepared the following brief invocation to Februus/Februa  re-adapting the invocation for the land purification from Cato (De Agricoltura)

First invoking Janus, then Jupiter/Juno, then Februus/Februa with a libatio with wine.

"Februus/Februa I invoke you and I ask you to be propitious to me, to my family, to my house. I offer to you this wine so that you will keep diseases, desolation and all visible/invisible harms out of our bodies, spirits and souls. Give well-being to me, to my family and to this house. purify me, my family and my house".

Other festivities:
  • february 13th - 21st - Parentalia
  • february 15th - Lupercalia
  • february 17th - Quirinalia
  • february 21st - Feralia
  • february 23rd - Terminalia
  • february 24th - Regifugium
  • february 27th - Equiria
  • february 28th - Februalia

Febbraio

  • 13-21 febbraio - Parentalia
  • 15 febbraio - Lupercalia
  • 17 febbraio - Quirinalia
  • 21 febbraio - Feralia
  • 23 febbraio - Terminalia
  • 24 febbraio - Regifugium
  • 27 febbraio - Equiria
  • 28 febbraio - Februalia

The Arch

We are currently in a period entirely devoted to Janus. I think it may be useful to make some reflection about the Arch as peculiar symbolic expression of the idea of "passage".

Janus represents, among other, the sacralization of the "passage" in a terms of space, time and initiation (the vessel). Related to Time, Janus is the sacralization of the moments of passage or "phase change" during  natural cycles, in the human life, etc. Related to Space, the doors, the gates and all the sites materializing a passage have a sacred energy embodied in Janus. As for the time passages, the spatial passages represent a phase modification, a fracture and a discontinuity: the door, for example, divides and put in contact two spaces having different identities. In particular the door of the Temple (both architectural and natural) is a break-point between an "in" and an "out".

Passing through a door is a changing of status: this is particular relevant for a sacred place like a Temple but it is the same also for the house door.

I prefer not to discuss here about the meaning of the passage in initiation terms because it is a too long and complex issue to be properly analyzed here.

Therefore "passing through the door" is always a "dramatic" moment (in sacred sense): above all the passage through the "narrow gate" (observe the etruscan tombs or the ctonic sactuaries - palingenesis) and the bridges (structures unifying what Nature divided).

The Arch can be classified among those architectural structures with sacred and symbolic functions having a specific and peculiar meaning. Like other "passages", the arch presupposes a phase change, a continuity interruption, an "after-before" condition, a  fracture in space and time. Unlike other types of passages, the Arch depicts a "purification passage", a purification from the extreme impurity. It is thus an essential tool to restore a purity status which has been somehow altered, a condition of order which has been violated, a restoring of Cosmos from Chaos.

The purifyng function of the Arch is extremely complex according to a symbolic point of view and it is very difficult to discuss briefly this topic for the presence of many related issues.

The simplest and most visible example of this instrumental function is provided by the Triumphal Arch utilized in the military liturgies and processions. The soldiers, coming back from a military campaign contaminated by the Death, bloodshed and war, passed through the Arch to restore their "normal" status recomposing their spiritual integrity. The legionnaire, due to the bloodshed during the war, had left the "normal human order" and the passage thorugh the Arch gave the humanity back to the soldier.

Therefore, a triumph was not a military parade but a sacred rite whose main goal was the restoring of the Order the war and the bloodshed had altered.

An architectural structure highly evidencing this purification function of the Arch is the Amphitheatre (i. e. the Coliseum). Here it is possible to find an apotheosis of the Arch having the goal to purify people after having attended a kind of shows which had as main focus the liturgy of the bloodshed.

Similar considerations (the purification of the foreigners and the purification of "what is outside" the consacrated city space) could be made for the town gates.

The ancient christian churches had an arch as entrance in the yard in the front of the church with the same function. The Roman Temple, not conceiving the idea of sin, had no purification arch rather having seven steps (representing the "rise": seven skies, seven planets, seven levels, etc.)

Passing through an arch hence is not a "neutral" operation: reflecting about this function means maintaining a status of active continuos awareness in order to achieve a constant sacred and oriented vision of our life.

L'Arco

Jan. 22nd -24th: Paganalia

Paganalia are typical festivities of rural villages (pagus=village) during which every village celebrates the God/Goddess protecting the village's site. During these three days we focus our attention both towards the divine spirit animating the place where we live and the numen we feel closer to us also to receive his/her energy and qualities.

22-24 gennaio: Paganalia

Carmentalia - Carmenta

The days from jan. 12 to 15 are dedicated to Carmenta, the sacralization of the female energy of the prediction and prophecy. Carmenta-Carmentis is identified as a nymph to evidence the link between this sacred force and the female energy of water.

Carmenta, who in the past had a specific Flamen and a specific Flaminica, deploys her power over the human birth because she is a Goddess of the Destiny: this is the reason why Carmenta is linked to prophecy. I would like to highlight however that the term "prophecy" has not to be intented as a form of passionate and irrational prediction of the future in a profane sense, but the capability to "see what the others cannot see" in a mystical sense. While a strix, inspired by Minerua can "see through the darkness", the prophetess, inspired by Carmenta, can "see through the time".

Carmenta has two epithets resembling the position of the baby at the birth: Postuorta e Prorsa. The former evidences when Carmenta looks to the past, the latter when looking to the future. This condition contributes also to highlight the link between Carmenta and Janus.

Carmenta is the sacralization also of any kind of ritual formulas in the Traditional Roman Religion. The term carmen  identifies the "sung ritual word" it means hymns, sacred verses, invocations to the Deities when these invocations are fixed in a formula: the song of the Arvales is named Carmen.

Carmentalia - Carmenta

Allocutio to Gods/Goddesses

For the Janus Agonalia I here enclose an adaptation of an Allocutio to Gods by Pletho as propitiatory invocation  for the new year.
(my English translation unfortunately is not very good...)

May all the blessed totality of Gods and Goddesses give a propitius and benevolent ear to this invocation. You, Gods and Goddesses, watch the human behaviour: you, among other signs of your foresight, have separated life into two parts, sleep and wakefulness, a succession necessary to preserve this mortal body for the duration assigned to it. Thus, from the moment we wake up and move from our bed, give us the possibility to live correctly: it means in harmony and in peace with you, this day, this month, this year we are about to live and the rest of our life.
(...)

Impede that we will be completely dominated by our mortal element: may our superior and excellent part of our being, similar to your nature, be connected with you: may it dominate and govern our less noble part: and, for this reason, support it. May our actions and activities we will undertake be directed according to your reason and wisdom; may our mortal irrational princple never completely prevail and the waekest part of our nature won't take us far from you. Support our superior part in this effort to always follow you, creating with you a strong alliance, a familiar harmony, adapting every action to the rules imposed by this proximity in natures.

(...)
Above all, donate us, now and forever, a right idea about you.

(...)
Strengthen these certainties in us and, stating our origins, our essence and the place we have in the Universe, preserve us free forever.

(...)
Strengthen our intellectual and divine part of our being: we will enjoy the pleasures deriving from senses with moderation to avoid that they can harm the wealth of our body and spirit: they must contribute to the wealth of our life.

The misleading pleasures will never take possession of us.
Richness will be only a tool to satisfy the reasonable needs of our life.
An endless desire, source of any kind of evil, will never grow in our spirit.

(...)
We will make the sacred rites in the best way and above all in the way accordigly to who knows that you don't need them: this is a way to operate on our imagination, the most divine power we have, to educate it, to elevate it up to what is beautiful, celestial and divine.

January

This month is entirely dedicated to Ianus, a male Divine Force, symbolizing the sacralization of the "beginnings", springs, doors and gates (Ianua)

Ianus essentially sacralizes the "passage" both in spatial and in temporal sense unifying two spaces as well as two times. Also for this reason Ianus is symbolically represented having two opposite faces one oriented to the past and one to the future (also having however a third face not visible for the common man).

Ianus' main symbol is a couple of keys: a golden and a silver key.

Ianus' female polarity are Carna, Iuturna and Diana.

Main festivities in January are:

  • January 9th : Ianus' Agonalia
  • January 11th: Iuturnalia
  • January 12th - 15th: Carmentalia
  • January 22nd - 24th: Paganalia
  • January 25th: Sementina

Gennaio

  • 11 Gennaio: Iuturnalia
  • 12 - 15 Gennaio: Carmentalia
  • 22 - 24 Gennaio: Paganalia
  • 25 Gennaio: Sementina

December 25th: Sol Invictus

December 25th is dedicated to "Sol Invictus" (Invincible Sun) celebrating the perpetual light's vitality.

This is a particularly old festivity already known and celebrated by ancient egyptians: divine energy "Earth's Heart" or "Intelligent Light" flows into a sacred cone shaped stone (Betilus - Gods' See) or in black stones or flash stones.

Sol Invictus was a special protector of the Emperor and the entire Roman Empire.

In this day an omnipotent, eternal and universal single sole God is celebrated whose most splendid manifestation is the Sun. This Great One has the Substance which Gods are formed of.

For this reason, christianity took possession of this ancient pagan festivity making it coincide with Christmas and the Jesus' birth.

It is important to note that the concept of Sun celebrated in this day is not referred to the Sun as "astronomical object", or the star everyone can see in the sky - the sole sun the profane people can perceive, but as "divine entity", but the so-called "Third Sun", "The Centre of the Universe, "The Divine Entity". I suggest for any further detail the reading of the text by the Emperor Julian "Hymn To King Helios". This well-known hymn by Proclus can be used as correct invocation.

Proclus; Hymn to Helios

Hearken, king of noeric fire, Titan holding the golden bridle,
hearken, dispenser of light, you, o Lord, who hold yourself the key to the life-supporting source
and channel off from above a rich stream of harmony into the material worlds.
Hearken: for you, being above the middlemost seat of aether
and in possession of the very brilliant disk,
the heart of the cosmos, have filled everything
with your intellect-awakening providence.
The planets, girded with your ever-blooming torches,
through unceasing and untiring dances
always send life-producing drops down for earthlings.
Under the influence of your chariot’s returning courses
everything that is born has sprouted up according to the ordinance of the Seasons.
The din of the elements clashing with each other
stopped once you appeared from your unspeakable begetter.
For you the unshakeable choir of the Moirai has yielded.
Back again they wind the thread of compelling  destiny,
when you wish it.
For all around you dominate, all around you rule by force.
From your chain the king of the song that obeys the divine, Phoibos, sprung forth.
Singing inspired songs to the accompaniment of the kithara
he calms the great wave of deep-roaring becoming.
From your evil-averting band that imparts pleasant gifts Paiêon sprouted,
and he imposed his health by filling the wide cosmos with harmony wholly devoid of harm.
People honour you in hymns as the famous father of Dionysus.
And again some praise you in songs as Euios Attis in the extreme depths of  matter,
whereas others praise you as pretty Adonis.
The threat of your swift whip holds fears for the wild-tempered daemons, noxious to men,
who prepare evil for our miserable souls,
in order that forever, in the gulf of heavy-resounding life,
they suffer once they have fallen under the yoke of the body
with the result that they forget the bright-shining court of the lofty Father.
But, you the best of gods, crowned with fire, blest daemon,
image of the all-creating god, uplifter of souls,
hearken and always purify me of every fault;
receive my tearful supplication,
pull me out of baneful defilement and keep me far from the punishing deities
while mollifying the swift eye of Justice that sees all.
May you always through your evil-averting help
give holy light rich with blessings to my soul,
once you have scattered the man-destroying poisonous mist,
and to my body fitness and gift-bestowing health;
bring me to glory, that in accord with the traditions of my fore fathers
I may cultivate the gifts of the Muses with pretty locks.
Give me, if you wish so, Lord, unshakeable bliss as a reward for lovely piety.
You perfect all things easily, for you have the power and infinite might.
And if some ill comes my way through the threads moved by the stars
from the spindles of destiny that revolve in helices,
ward it off yourself with your mighty radiance.

25 Dicembre: Sol Invictus

I pianeti, cinti dalle tue fiamme perennemente vivide,
Balzò fuori di vostra catena Febo, signore della sacra melodia;
Te cantano il glorioso padre di Dioniso;
ascolta, e purificami da ogni peccato per sempre;

December 21st: Divalia

This day is dedicated to an ancient Goddess, Angerona - Dea Dia, so ancient that also for Romans was rather mysterious. This day and Dea Dia are devoted to the rites of a particularly important moment of the year: the winter solstice

In this peculiar day named dies brevissimus (shortest day), the Ianua Coeli (The Sky Gates) are opened (the Ianus' golden key) and light preavils again over darkness. The biological cycle of life begins again.

The importance of Dea Dia is given also by the fact that the temple of this Goddess, on 19 or 29 May, was the sacred place where the Arvales met to attend to important liturgies (Arvalia) in favour of Lares. Arvales, dressed with white gowns (white expresses magical sovereignty) through ceremonies for Dea Dia, Lares and Mars-father affirmed the ties of the mankind with Mother Earth.

During this day, which marks the beginning of the Arvalic Year, we remember our Lares or The Ancestors and the future descendants; we, the living part of the family, thus are the "present ring" of a long chain being suspended between past and future.

The Lar Familiaris is the "family's soul" whose symbol is the home firelight as in the case of Vesta Mater.

The home ceremony must be made after the sunset being addressed to the imagines of the two Home Lares (representing the two universal polarities: masculine and feminine).

The opening formula is as follows

SACRA PRIVATA PERPETUE MANENTO

Then the Ancient Invocation (Semones) of the Arvales:

E Nos Lases Ivvate (three times)
Neve Lve Rve Marmar Sins Incvurrere in Pleores (three times)
Satvr Fv Fere Mars Limen Sali Sta Berber (three times)
Semvnis Alternei Advocapit Conctos (three times)
E Nos Marmar Ivvato (three times)
Trivmpe (five times)

Afterwards, a very frugal meal can be eaten based on a simple soup of spelt, broad beans, lentils accompanied by simple flatbread and wine. Meat must be totally avoided.

21 Dicembre: Divalia

SACRA PRIVATA PERPETUE MANENTO

E Nos Lases Ivvate (tre volte)
Neve Lve Rve Marmar Sins Incvurrere in Pleores (tre volte)
Satvr Fv Fere Mars Limen Sali Sta Berber (tre volte)
Semvnis Alternei Advocapit Conctos (tre volte)
E Nos Marmar Ivvato (tre volte)
Trivmpe (cinque volte)

Saturn

Saturn is an extremely complex Divine Force. According to Macrobius, great mysteries were hidden in the Saturnalia rites.

Saturn is a titanic divine force deriving from the union between the Sky and the Earth in symbolic, hermetic and esoteric meanings.

In this meaning (and only in this not-profane meaning) Saturn is "the Ancient", he symbolizes a primordial state, the Saturnia Regna - the Golden Age/Satya-yuga - the beginning of the Sacred Time. With Saturn, the vital energy of the Earth ceases to be linked to Chaos.

Saturn is evirated (separation from power) and chased away by Jupiter. For this reason Saturn hid himeself in Latium and then he disappeared from the Earth. With Jupiter the Age of Silver begins followed by the Age of Bronze and Iron.

Saturn is at the base of the Roman Tradictional doctrine of the "Cycles": he represents the Cyclical Death presupposing the beginning of a new cycle. Being hidden in Latium, the Traditional Roman Religion directly derives from the primordial traditional wisdom and knowledge of the Golden Age.

Saturn is the guardian of the secrets of Agriculture (Sator - he cultivating) and navigation (in esoteric sense): he is a Divine Force connected to the "Depth", the Underworld.

All the altars are sacred to Saturn. The ara in the past was just an ara graminacea or a clod of grass and Saturn represents also the primordial fire. During the Saturnalia candles were lit dedicated to the Superior Saturnali to be placed upon the altars.

According to a hermetic perspective, Saturn is symbolized by Lead (Reverse Gold) as expression of the "Matter". Lead and Gold are both generated by the same Force of Saturn. He brings a sickle as symbol of Dissolution and a compasses as symbol of Coagulation.

From Saturn the spyral initiation process begins: for this reason it is considered the most important step because representing the "primordial matter" without any form of derivation.

This explains the sentence: "find the hidden Gold in Saturn". This may explain also the reason why the treasury of the Roman State was placed in the Temple of Saturn.

Orphic Hymn to Kronos/Saturn (offering incense)

Etherial father, mighty Titan, hear,
Great fire of Gods and men, whom all revere:
Endu'd with various council, pure and strong,
To whom perfection and decrease belong.
Consum'd by thee all forms that hourly die,
By thee restor'd, their former place supply;
The world immense in everlasting chains,
Strong and ineffable thy pow'r contains
Father of vast eternity, divine,
O mighty Saturn, various speech is thine:
Blossom of earth and of the starry skies,
Husband of Rhea, and Prometheus wife.
Obstetric Nature, venerable root,
From which the various forms of being shoot;
No parts peculiar can thy pow'r enclose,
Diffus'd thro' all, from which the world arose,
O, best of beings, of a subtle mind,
Propitious hear to holy pray'rs inclin'd;
The sacred rites benevolent attend,
And grant a blameless life, a blessed end.

Saturno

Ciò spiega l'espressione: individuare l'Oro Nascosto in Saturno.

Sempre fiorente,
padre degli Dei beati e degli uomini,
dai vari espedienti, incorrotto,
di grande forza, prode Titano,
che tutto esaurisci
e al contrario tu stesso accresci
che hai legami infrangibili nel cosmo infinito,
Crono generatore assoluto dell’eternità,
Crono dal vario parlare,
germoglio di Terra e Cielo Stellato,
nascita, crescita, diminuzione,
capostipite, dai disegni tortuosi,
ottimo: ascoltando la voce supplice
manda un felice termine di vita
sempre irreprensibile.

December

December derives its name from the fact to be the 10th month of the king Numa's ancient calendar which begins on March.

December represents the "depth", the origins, the Antique and Primordial Time: the beginning of Time. This is a very particular month focused essentially on the festivities and rites of Saturnalia and Divalia (dec. 21st). If Janus represents the beginning, Saturnus (to which December is dedicated) represents the "end".

During December Nature turns her energies back to Earth: a cycle ends as precondition for the opening of the next one. This is a period of Death, not in a profane sense, praparing a re-generation time. The Ianua Coeli open in December.

Main festivities are:

  • 1 december - Bona Dea
  • 5 december - Faunalia
  • 10 december - Janus' Agonalia
  • 15 december- Consualia
  • 17 december- Opalia
  • 18 - 22 december- Saturnalia
  • 21 december- Divalia
  • 25 december- Sol Invictus

Dicembre

  • 1 dicembre - Bona Dea
  • 5 dicembre - Faunalia
  • 10 dicembre - Agonalia di Giano
  • 15 dicembre - Consualia
  • 17 dicembre - Opalia
  • 18 - 22 dicembre - Saturnalia
  • 21 dicembre - Divalia
  • 25 dicembre - Sol Invictus
