Allocutio to Gods/Goddesses

For the Janus Agonalia I here enclose an adaptation of an Allocutio to Gods by Pletho as propitiatory invocation  for the new year.

(my English translation unfortunately is not very good...)

 

May all the blessed totality of Gods and Goddesses give a propitius and benevolent ear to this invocation. You, Gods and Goddesses, watch the human behaviour: you, among other signs of your foresight, have separated life into two parts, sleep and wakefulness, a succession necessary to preserve this mortal body for the duration assigned to it. Thus, from the moment we wake up and move from our bed, give us the possibility to live correctly: it means in harmony and in peace with you, this day, this month, this year we are about to live and the rest of our life.

Impede that we will be completely dominated by our mortal element: may our superior and excellent part of our being, similar to your nature, be connected with you: may it dominate and govern our less noble part: and, for this reason, support it. May our actions and activities we will undertake be directed according to your reason and wisdom; may our mortal irrational princple never completely prevail and the waekest part of our nature won't take us far from you. Support our superior part in this effort to always follow you, creating with you a strong alliance, a familiar harmony, adapting every action to the rules imposed by this proximity in natures.

Above all, donate us, now and forever, a right idea about you.

Strengthen these certainties in us and, stating our origins, our essence and the place we have in the Universe, preserve us free forever.

Strengthen our intellectual and divine part of our being: we will enjoy the pleasures deriving from senses with moderation to avoid that they can harm the wealth of our body and spirit: they must contribute to the wealth of our life. 

 

The misleading pleasures will never take possession of us.

Richness will be only a tool to satisfy the reasonable needs of our life.

An endless desire, source of any kind of evil, will never grow in our spirit.

We will make the sacred rites in the best way and above all in the way accordigly to who knows that you don't need them: this is a way to operate on our imagination, the most divine power we have, to educate it, to elevate it up to what is beautiful, celestial and divine.
