Saturnalia encompass a festivity period dedicated to Saturn or "primordility": Saturn is linked to the idea of a past "Golden Age" without social divisions, wars and great freedom and happiness.
Saturn is defined as "Time preceding Time": he is named also "the Perfect", "the Eldest" or "the Sower" because in this period, after the sowing, seeds rest under the ground.
Saturn has a peculiar role within the Roman Traditional Pantheon because tradition states that Saturn, after being deposed by Jupiter as Lord of the Universe, found refuge in Latium (the region where Rome was founded) where Janus reigned. Janus was the sole God who gave hospitality to Saturn teaching also to Saturn the art of sowing. For this reason Latium, and in a broad sense Italy as a whole, were named "Saturnia Tellus" (Land of Saturn).
During Saturnalia anything is permitted and possible because Saturn is the idea of total freedom and licit. During this period the main activities are suspended and time is completely devoted to celebrations and parties.
These days are inspired to freedom of expression and great conviviality meeting friends and families to share joyful meals accompanied by wine and cakes.
This ancient festivity has been transformed into Carnival.
