When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

Febbraio

  • 13-21 febbraio - Parentalia
  • 15 febbraio - Lupercalia
  • 17 febbraio - Quirinalia
  • 21 febbraio - Feralia
  • 23 febbraio - Terminalia
  • 24 febbraio - Regifugium
  • 27 febbraio - Equiria

January

This month is entirely dedicated to Ianus, a male God, symbolizing the sacralization of the "beginnings", springs, doors and gates (Ianua)

Ianus essentially sacralizes the "passage" both in spatial and in temporal sense unifying two spaces as well as two times. Also for this reason Ianus is symbolically represented having two opposite faces one oriented to the past and one to the future (also having however a third face not visible for the common man).

Ianus' main symbol is a couple of keys: a golden and a silver key.

Ianus' female polarity are Carna, Iuturna and Diana.

Main festivities in January are:

  • January 9th : Ianus' Agonalia
  • January 11th: Iuturnalia
  • January 12th - 15th: Carmentalia
  • January 22nd - 24th: Paganalia
  • January 25th: Sementina

Gennaio

  • 11 Gennaio: Iuturnalia
  • 12 - 15 Gennaio: Carmentalia
  • 22 - 24 Gennaio: Paganalia
  • 25 Gennaio: Sementina

December 25th: Sol Invictus

December 25th is dedicated to "Sol Invictus" (Invincible Sun) celebrating the perpetual light's vitality.

This is a particularly old festivity already known and celebrated by ancient egyptians: divine energy "Earth's Heart" or "Intelligent Light" flows into a sacred cone shaped stone (Betilus - Gods' See) or in black stones or flash stones.

Sol Invictus was a special protector of the Emperor and the entire Roman Empire.

In this day an omnipotent, eternal and universal single sole God is celebrated whose most splendid manifestation is the Sun. This Great One has the Substance which Gods are formed of.

For this reason, christianity took possession of this ancient pagan festivity making it coincide with Christmas and the Jesus' birth.

25 Dicembre: Sol Invictus

December the 21st: Divalia

This day is dedicated to an ancient Goddess, Angerona - Dea Dia, so ancient that also for Romans was rather mysterious. This day and Dea Dia are devoted to the rites of a particularly important moment of the year: the winter solstice

In this peculiar day named dies brevissimus (shortest day), the Ianua Coeli (The Sky Gates) are opened (the Ianus' golden key) and light preavils again over darkness. The biological cycle of life begins again.

The importance of Dea Dia is given also by the fact that the temple of this Goddess, on 19 or 29 May, was the sacred place where the Arvales met to attend to important liturgies (Arvalia) in favour of Lares. Arvales, dressed with white gowns (white expresses magical sovereignty) through ceremonies for Dea Dia, Lares and Mars-father affirmed the ties of the mankind with Mother Earth.

During this day, which marks the beginning of the Arvalic Year, we remember our Lares or The Ancestors and the future descendants; we, the living part of the family, thus are the "present ring" of a long chain being suspended between past and future.

The Lar Familiaris is the "family's soul" whose symbol is the home firelight as in the case of Vesta Mater.

The home ceremony must be made after the sunset being addressed to the imagines of the two Home Lares (representing the two universal polarities: masculine and feminine).

The opening formula is as follows

SACRA PRIVATA PERPETUE MANENTO

Then the Ancient Invocation (Semones) of the Arvales:

E Nos Lases Ivvate (three times)
Neve Lve Rve Marmar Sins Incvurrere in Pleores (three times)
Satvr Fv Fere Mars Limen Sali Sta Berber (three times)
Semvnis Alternei Advocapit Conctos (three times)
E Nos Marmar Ivvato (three times)
Trivmpe (five times)

Afterwards, a very frugal meal can be eaten based on a simple soup of spelt, broad beans, lentils accompanied by simple flatbread and wine. Meat must be totally avoided.

21 dicembre: Divalia

SACRA PRIVATA PERPETUE MANENTO

E Nos Lases Ivvate (tre volte)
Neve Lve Rve Marmar Sins Incvurrere in Pleores (tre volte)
Satvr Fv Fere Mars Limen Sali Sta Berber (tre volte)
Semvnis Alternei Advocapit Conctos (tre volte)
E Nos Marmar Ivvato (tre volte)
Trivmpe (cinque volte)

Dec. 18th - Dec. 22nd: Saturnalia

Saturnalia encompass a festivity period dedicated to Saturn or "primordility": Saturn is linked to the idea of a past "Golden Age" without social divisions, wars and great freedom and happiness.

Saturn is defined as "Time preceding Time": he is named also "the Perfect", "the Eldest" or "the Sower" because in this period, after the sowing, seeds rest under the ground.

Saturn has a peculiar role within the Roman Traditional Pantheon because tradition states that Saturn, after being deposed by Jupiter as Lord of the Universe, found refuge in Latium (the region where Rome was founded) where Janus reigned. Janus was the sole God who gave hospitality to Saturn teaching also to Saturn the art of sowing. For this reason Latium, and in a broad sense Italy as a whole, were named "Saturnia Tellus" (Land of Saturn).

During Saturnalia anything is permitted and possible because Saturn is the idea of total freedom and licit. During this period the main activities are suspended and time is completely devoted to celebrations and parties.

These days are inspired to freedom of expression and great conviviality meeting friends and families to share joyful meals accompanied by wine and cakes.

This ancient festivity has been transformed into Carnival.

18-22 dicembre: Saturnalia

December the 17th: Opalia

This date is dedicated to Ops Consiva or the feminine polarity of Consus. Ops represents "corn put down in the barn" and her main festivity is august 25th. The december festivity is linked to the above mentioned feminine polarity of the related numen and prepares to the great festivities of Saturnalia.

As already said for Consualia, Ops, being an expression of agricultural activities, may be celebrated with a frugal meal based on flatbread, spelt, bean and lentil soup. Eating meat is to be avoided because Ops, like Consus, does not appreciate animal slaughtering.

martedì 16 dicembre 2008

17 Dicembre: Opalia

December the 15th: Consualia

This day is dedicated to Consus who represents the end of the sowing activities. In the past the related festivity was celebrated with processions and races of mules ornated with flower wreaths.
At present we can celebrate this day eating a frugal meal with flatbreads, spelt, bean and lentil soup. It is better not to eat meat because Consus is linked to agricultural works in the fields and these Gods do not appreciate animal slaughtering.

15 dicembre: Consualia

Defining Gods

Gods are "super-existential forms of the being". They are the sacralization of energies, forces, powers or concepts.

When a God is "naked" or "a neutral expression" then he/she can be defined as "numen". This term derives from the latin "nuo" which means "to nod" that is the way through which the numen manifests himself/herself.

In general, Gods are powers neither masculine nor feminine or, better, they are both masculine and feminine. Each God shows masculine and feminine polarities which are in harmony and cannot prevail on each other: for example Jupiter (masculine polarity) and Juno (feminine polarity) .

Only in some cases, there are some Gods having only one polarity, the feminine one; this is the case of the Great Mothers who have not a masculine polarity.

According to tradition, three forms of theology can be identified:
  • popular theology
  • natural theology
  • social theology
Each God may be included, in one way or another, within these three thelogies: Jupiter for example represents the sacralization of the flash of lightning (natural theology) and authority (social theology) having also a long series of qualities and appellations (indigitamenta)

Do not forget that anything is "normal" is "sacred".
