When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

Aprile - Venere

Venere viene indentificata come:
  • Venere Pandemia: amore fisico
  • Venere Urania: amore spirituale

The symbolic value of the fingers

Some days ago, while browsing a book looking for some religious details, I have found a nice imagine of a roman bronze hand used for divination through palmistry-chiromancy

Here I don't want to discuss about ancient palmistry in detail (too complex, too long) but rather to use this imagine to make some brief consideration about the symbolic value of the fingers according to the Traditional Roman Spirituality.

I want to highlight that this is a very complex symbology: the present discussion has thus to be included in such a perspective. This is to say that when mentioning a Deity, it should be clear enough by now the meaning and sense within which this Deity is cited. For example, when mentioning Jupiter I do not refer to an old man with white hairs and beard appearing from the clouds: I'm citing a force, an energy, a declination of a precise manifestation of the Being.

About the symbolism of the hand, I have already written something in a previous post

The human body, as well as other manifestation of the Nature, is a sort of microcosm in strict relation with the macrocosm, where force and energies of the Nature and Universe are articulated and expressed. Hands and fingers show therefore a complex cosmic symbology whose main goal is to maintain our awareness about these forces around us and inside us.

In particular I'm discussing about the fingers in the left hand (the favourable hand).

The annular is defined as the "medical finger", "Goldfinger", Snakefinger", "Dragonfinger". In Arvalic terms is mentioned as the "Poplar Finger" (sacred tree to Apollo). This finger is related to Apollo. In esoteric and astrological terms, the annular is linked to the heart (sacred to Apollo). For this reason the wedding ring must be made of gold (symbol of the Sun-Apollo) and must be worn in the annular of the left hand. Please note that rings, nodes and necklaces, according to the Tradition, are always tools to control, to block, to regulate, to slow down the circulation of the energy inside the body. Wearing a ring in the left annular means that the matrimonial loyalty is under control and directly connected to the heart, seat of the everlasting love. The annular, being connected to Apollo and "medical finger", is used to stir potions, medical remedies and infusions.

The index is related to Jupiter and Juno .It is the "Authority Finger", "The Justice" and the "Loyalty finger". In Arvalic terms is defined as the "Oak Finger" or "Broom Finger". Judges, Emperors as well as the pater and mater familias, when underlining their authority, always raised the index: we still do the same when we want to reproach someone... Being the Loyalty Finger, the index was used in the past to salute: the gesture of the roman salute was made just rasing the index of the right hand (Hand of Fides). Other forms of roman salute, invented in more or less recent times, are just fantasies.
In rites related to the death or to infernal Deities, the index is linked to Pluto and Proserpina as Authority of the Underworld.
The tip of the index is named "Divination Point". In Arvalic terms, the index tip is defined as the "alder point" or "ash-tree point": these trees were used for divination.

The smallest finger is connected to Mercury in his infernal and ctone aspects. It is defined sometimes as "Soul Finger" or "Shadows' Finger". In Arvalic terms, it is identified as the  "Yew Finger" because the wood of this tree is used for the dead fires (cremation) and to make the urns for dead. The ship taking the dead's souls to the Underworld is made of wood of yew, This tree is also sacred to Maia (the underground tepor). It plays an important role in the ancient palmistry and divination above all for the rites for dead. The smallest finger is connected to the lungs (lungs are sacred to Mercury).

The thumb is related to Venus having an essentially phallic symbology. In Arvalic terms it is mentioned as the "Palm Tree Finger" or "Grapevine Finger" (both plants are sacred to Venus). In the past, men wore an iron (this metal is linked to Mars and Volcan) ring in the thumb as tool to control an eventual excessive virility. The thumb is connected to the kidneys (sacred to Venus).

The middle finger is linked to Saturn. In the Arval symbology is named as the "Heather Finger" or "Willow Finger" or "Rebirth Finger". Having a golden ring in the middle finger symbolizes the re-birth (finding the Gold in Saturn, according to the Alchemy formula).

The centre of the hand is considered a point where the energy of Mars converges. Frequently in the left hand it is possible to read, among the lines, the letter "M" (Mars) in the centre of the hand. Of course it is possible also to read many other letters: but this is a too long topic to be discussed here.

The palm of the hand is linked to the Moon and Diana: this point is named "Light in the Night" or "Light in the Underworld". Sometimes it is possible to note, at the hand's base, a triangle. This triangle is the symbol of the feminine energy inside us. It is the symbol of the power of the inner water in the body. The palm is connected to the head (sacred to Diana).

The smallest finger and the palm are therefore related to infernal forces. In particular when the smallest finger touches the palm (Mercury and Moon) the hand shows a position used in the past in the rites to recall the dead.

The knowledge of this symbology is at the base of the so called "Latin Blessing": the thumb, ths index and the middle finger are raised. The thumb, sacred to Venus, evidences "the Growth", the index (sacred to Jupiter) evidences a favourable life and the middle finger (sacred to Saturn) the re-birth (the three phases of the Being). This gesture, as many other things, has been "stolen" by the christians: the christian pope, when blessing, makes the sign of the cross putting the fingers according to the Ancient "Latin Blessing".

Similarly it is possible to explain the "Infernal Blessing" or "Pan Blessing" or the index (Pluto and Proserpina) and the smallest finger (Mercury) raised  while the other fingers touch the palm of the hand (Moon). This gesture in the Middle Age became the "witch's blessing": today it is known as the sign of the horns (negative and ill omen). This superstition is unknown in the Traditional Roman Spirituality.

In the Middle Age (but in some parts of Italy this stuff remained alive well beyond the Middle Age) in the foolish and ignorant waves of those times, they tried to reproduce the magical badly understood powers (considered as such) of these bronze hands used for the "Latin Blessing", through the so called "Hand of Glory". The Hand of Glory was the right hand amputated from a hanged criminal which was dried through specific expedients. It was moved for magical and divination goals with the absurd and grotesque results we can easily imagine.

It is possible to clearly understand that fingers and parts of the hand show an oracular value and the right knowledge of their use, meaning and value, according to the Traditional perspective, plays a fundamental role when performing rites and rituals above all those related to the augurales, pontificales, divination and haruspex Sciences. Please note, in the antique imagines, the position of the hands and fingers (but also the position of the feet) the augures, flamines or pontifices had during these rites.

This issue, as already mentioned, is very long and complex showing many interrelated questions and links for example with the Theobotanica. Of course, I'm just a Cultor: so, my knowledge about these topics is very limited. An augur or a pontifex have a deeper knowledge about it. For any further detail please contact them above all about how to use hands and fingers in the proper way while performing important divination rites.

I want to include the following carmen (I think with celtic origins: the "Dichetal do Chennaib"): it recalls a common tradition resuming many concepts useful for the Arvalic Knowledge. I think that an Arval Sister or Brother should memorize it...

 Tree powers, finger tips,
First pentad of the four,
Discover all your poet asks,
Drumming on his brow.

Birch peg, throbbing thumb,
By power of divination,
Birch bring him news of love,
Loud the heart knocks.

Rowan rod, forefinger,
By power of divination,
unriddle him a riddle,
The key's cast away.

Ash, middle finger,
By power of divination,
Weatherwise, fool otherwise,
Mete him out the winds.

Alder, psychic finger,
By power of divination,
Diagnose all maladies
Of a doubtful mind.

Willow wand, ear finger,
By power of divination,
Force confessions from the mouth,
Of a mouldering corpse.

Finger-ends, five twigs,
Trees, true-divining trees,
Discover all your poet asks,
Drumming on his brow.

o betulla, portagli nuove d'amore;
forte batte il cuore

Verga di sorbo selvatico, indice,
in forza di divinazione
risolvigli l'enigma
la chiave è gettata via

Frassino, dito medio,
in forza di divinazione,
conoscitore del tempo, ma altrimenti folle
distribuiscigli i venti

Ontano, dito medico,
in forza di divinazione
diagnostica ogni morbo
in una mente dubbiosa

Bacchetta di salice, dito auricolare,
in forza di divinazione,
strappa confessioni dalla bocca
di un cadavere in disfacimento

Punte delle dita,
cinque ramettti
alberi, alberi che divinano il vero
scoprite quanto il poeta vi chiede
tamburellandogli sulla fronte

Arvalic Knowledge: again about herbs and plants

In my previous post, I have mentioned some principles as introduction to Theobotanica and Arvalic Knowledge. Here I would like to highlight the importance of the knowledge about herbs, plants and trees under many point of view. Firstly, I would like to evidence the importance of a diet where vegetables play a critical role: of course I do not want to fanatically sponsor a vegetarian or vegan diet of any kind. Just use your wisdom and good sense. I think that a real reduction in consumption of meat and/or food and beverages based on high levels of sugar can be a real healthy choice for all of us. That's all.

We can appreciate herbs and plants first of all for their taste consuming them as fresh or cooked vegetables or for examples as infusion. It is important also to remind their therapeutic role.

According to the Arvalic Science, there are, under the therapeutic point of view, three kinds of herbs: normal herbs we can consume as common food because they do not produce any harm, special herbs we can take also for long time to improve our health and powerful herbs we can take for very short periods as remedies for particular health problems.

We can use roots, leaves and flowers from the same plant and herb. All the herbs and plants showing therapeutical effects are named "healing herbs". Of course, when in good health conditions, it is not necessary to use healing herbs.

The most common method to take the benefits from the simples and healing herbs is the tisane or a beverage made of these herbs. It is possible to make also compresses and packs. Tisanes can be made through an infusion or decoction.

Infusion is generally adopted for flowers and leaves and for those herbs sensitive to high temperatures. An infusion can be obtained putting the flowers or leaves in boiled water leaving them in the water for about 15 minutes or pouring boiled water over the dried herbs. Then the beverage has to be strained.

Decoction can be used for all the parts of a plant above all the hardest ones. Herbs are mashed and put into water. Than the preparation has to be boiled for 15-20 minutes. The liquid is left steeping and strained.

IMPORTANT
It is important to remind some prudence and precautions. Traditions teaches us that herbs and plants can be beneficial for some and harmful for others or beneficial in a given moment and circumstance and harmful in others. This happens because these potions are not "universal remedies": they must put in relation with the individual peculiar and specific characteristics, her/his lifestyles and diet, her/his personal feelings and psychological conditions or the way thorugh which some health problems are manifested. It is thus necessary a very deep and long knowledge and experience about these issues.

Moreover, in my very limited personal experience I can say that recognizing these plants and herbs, learning and understanding their properties and features, the capability to prepare tisanes are something you cannot learn in a book or watching your computer or phone. It is always necessary the presence of very experienced people with deep skills and expertize, capable to direct us and teach us: above all it is necessary to make a long in-field experience (this is the real case!). Do not have trust in improvised people: similarly do not take wild herb without the necessary expertize and knowledge. In both cases the consequences may be very serious.

IMPORTANTE
Bisogna ricordare alcune precauzioni.

Artemisia - Mater Herbarum

With the beginning of the Sacred Year, also the Nature, in her cycles, starts again her vegetative activities. For this reason I think that it could be useful to make some considerations about some concepts I consider extremely important also for an Arvalic Sister and Brother.

I would like to provide some detail about Artemisia, as foundamental component of the Sacred Knowledge and Sacred Science which Tradition, even if not so easily, has transmitted to us: this is a Via capable to link some experienced women and men to the Deities through some important Divine expressions.

Artemisia  is a Feminine Sacred Force intrinsecally inherent to the Nature which mainly (but not exclusively) is linked to plants, herbs, flowers, roots, mushrooms, trees. She is a real Hidden and Secret Power, concealed in the Nature whose knwoledge implies great efforts and long experience. Tradition has transmitted to us Artemisia as a Great Goddess, a Potnia, often known as Mater Herbarum: she is also linked to Artemis - Diana. Being a Feminine Force, Artemisia firstly is related to Women: this Potnia mainly (but not only) cures and recovers women and children. Being connected to Diana, as well known by now, Artemisia can be healthy but she can also drive to Death.

Inside the plants, flowers, herbs, mushrooms, roots, trees a complex secretd power is hidden from which it can be possible to obtain remedies and medicaments as well as poison. We all know that approaching this Goddess without adequate discernment, wisdom and knowledge can produce very serious consequences.

The knowledge and the respect required to approach this Goddess are at the base of the  Theobotanica or the Sacred and Divine Science of Plants and Herbs, one of the fundamental component of the Arvalic Knowledge.

Artemisia is the "Goddess of the Garden" above all the (wild) garden composed of Simples or those foundamental plants and herbs not requiring other herbs to be beneficial to health.

Plants, herbs, flowers, roots, mushrooms, trees not only have specific properties and signs but also relevant symbolic values. Creating an Arvalic Garden implies a global knowledge about values, propertie and functions of these Simples which Artemisia symbolizes as a whole.

Artemisia is therefore the wild "Creating Spontaneous Force" of the Nature and Earth, something, more than the idea of fertility, being capable to clearly evidence the link between Life-health-Death.

Artemisia - Mater Herbarum

March

After having celebrated the Februalia as final rite of purification during the last day of February, on March the 1st the Sacred Year begins.

March is thus a very important month characterized by many celebrations, rites and festivals.

March is enterely dedicated to Life and Nature re-birth in all their expressions. This month is dedicated to the generating forces converging into two polatiries: Mars (Male Polarity) and Cybele (Female Polarity)

Mars - usually wrongly labelled only as the God of War - is the "He-generating". He is symbolically Romolus' and Remus' father being in this way Father of the Roman People. Mars is the Fecundating Male Energy, expanding active energy: he-fecundating Earth, Plants, Flowers, Fields, etc. He is defined as Marmor (shining, gleaming) but more frequently as Marmar (Reproductive Force of the Nature) or Gradivus (Fecundating Vegetation).

Sacred plants to Mars are: figtree and oak. Sacred animals are: wolf, horse and woodpecker.

If Janus is the sacralization of the "beginnings", Mars is the sacralization of the "activity" and "things' blossoming". To Mars are dedicated the "Sacrae Prima-verae" of youth who entered the adult life as foundators and fecundators.
His sacred symbol is a Spear.

The Mars antique female polarity is Nerio but in the time course she tended to have a smaller and smaller importance.

Cybele is the female polarity of fecundity (She-Fecundating). Cybele is by definition the Great Mather embracing all the Goddesses having specific characteristics. In the same time she is associated to the main Goddesses: Iuno, Vesta, Tellus, Bona Dea, Maia, Gaia, Flora, Ceres, Pomona, etc.

Cybele is the perennial energy of the Nature renewal. She is the Lady of the Plants: pine, boxtree and oak are sacred plants to Cybele. She is also the Lady of the Animals. Humans have learnt from her how to cultivate corn and cereals.

Cybele's sacred symbols are: the Tower and the Lion.

Marzo

Tips of Ancient Wisdom - 15

"He thought that, unlike physical deseases, which sometimes can be also treated using the force, renouncing to a false religious belief cannot be imposed by using the iron hand. Even if the hands is burning incense, conscience will blame that hand, accusing the weakness of the body and maintaining the same certainty as before. The result is an empty appearance of change rather than a real conversion in opinions: then those denied their religion obtain the absolution and those sentenced to death are honored like gods".

Libanius "Funeral oration upon the Emperor Julian", 122

Marica

Some days ago, as usual, I went to the forest in the hills around my house to make the legnaticum

I have made a long walk with my baculum (I left my car in the garage any time I can: I prefer to walk whenever I can): I went through the forest to pick dead branches the trees leave on the ground. With these branches I make some bundles I use during winter at home for my fireplace.

As usual, while walking inside the forest, my thoughts  were directed to those Goddesses giving life to these so particular places. First of all Diana: then I invoked Marica in order to be able to make my legnaticum in harmony with the trees and the forest in that moment were hosting me (we are always guests in any sacred place) giving me the possibility to make the legnaticum.

Marica is "the Lady of the Forests", an Italic potnia (maybe with origins in Sabinia): she was very well-known and respected in the past in the countryside in Central Italy. This Goddess had a lucus near Minturno, but all the forests (in particular the moist and swampy forests) are sacred to Marica (mara = swamp).  Marica moreover gives life to the wild plants and grass in the forests giving to these plants their peculiar properties.

Marica also protects the newborns (Bona Dea)

Marica, sometimes also assimilated to Circe, symbolically gives life, support and help but in the sametime she can give Death: she transfers these characteristics to the wild plants. It is thus important for the Arvales to have a deep knowledge about Marica and the properties of the wild plants and herbs.

She is the sacralization of these places scarcely contaminated by the human presence. She is the Lady of the "Nobody's Land".

I have written this brief invocation, to be used before entering a forest, using contributions from Callimachus and the Orphic Hymn to Artemis.

You rarely go into town
Marica

You live in the mountains, visiting
the cities of humans, only when women
struck with painful labor, call to you for aid

Wild, infera, you kill the beasts with the happy destiny

You occupy the forests in the mountains, hurt the deer, augusta
I recognize you as queen of these places
always wild

Marica

Discendi raramente
Marica in città.

La tua dimora
sono i monti e le città
frequenti solo quando
in aiuto ti chiamano le donne
morse

sempre silvestre

Invocatio

Gods and Goddesses are not personal entities subjected to a passional devotion aimed to achieve their favour and intervention. They are Entities of the Universe: they are components of the Universe as well as other entities through which the Universe appears to us.
The Universe permeates all.

"Whatever is below is similar to that which is above. Through this the marvels of the work of one thing are procured and perfected"
(The Emerald Tablet)

This sentence clearly highlights the deep link bonding together everything within the great flow of the existence.

It means that a man or a woman undertaking the Via, thus becoming a Cultor or a Cultrix, becomes aware of this continuity and the presence of these interrelated contacts.

The invocatio (as theurgic expression of a prayer) is therefore the way through which we can develop and strengthen these contacts with the Divine dimension creating a continuity with the Deities. A Cultor or a Cultrix doesn't invoke a Deity demanding favours, but rather to creating a continuity between the Human and the Divine Dimension. Through the invocatio we awake inside our souls a quiet force in contact with the Divine one.A we can feel it.

The word invocatio is linked to the term Vox or the Thought (Mens) becoming expressed and embodied: the invocatio thus gives an expressed "shape" to the Thought.

For this reason the Traditional Roman Spirituality is a practice rather than a religion in profane terms. A real Cultor/Cultrix within their everyday life, even in the simplest actions, convey an invocatio because they have this awareness, this feeling: they are in a permanent contact with the Divine.

"Invoking means acting, acting means invoking"

The invocatio therefore confirms the right direction of the human acting by a Cultor/Cultrix. When we are in contact with our Gods and Goddesses, we can also "perceive" the Divine Help because the Human and Divine Dimension are integrated in harmony. We can call this also "Divine Providence".

Invocatio

"Invocare vuol dire agire, agire vuol dire invocare".

February

February  is dedicated to purification
During this month, festivities, rituals and festivals are focused on the memory of defuncts, magical animals, peaceful activities and sleeping. Any tool used for purification is named februum.

It is important to remind that the traditional year will begin on March 1st: thus purification during February is necessary to prepare the beginning of the new year.

This month is dedicated to Februus and Februa (male and female numen of "The Purifying") who, being positive energies, are opposed to Febris (The Fever), the negative energy.

The festivities during February are thus linked to purification activities (for the body, spirit, sites, objects, etc.)

February the 1st - Amburbium: festivity for the purification of villages and cities and their public sites through a circular procession holding a februum (a purification tool). The same ceremony can be applied for home purification.

This kind of public purification rite is not at present viable, but a private version of Amburbium can be made to purify our private space at home. The Amburbium can be made walking outside around the house (or, when not possible, inside the house) holding in the left hand a lituus (or a baculum) and offering to Februus/Februa milk, wine and water.

In these days of purification, it's better to refrain from eating meat and drinking alcohols and liquors. When possible it's good to devote time to reflections and meditation. This purification process should be considered of sort of therapy of purification essentially based on the following principles:
  • spiritual research
  • deep personal introspection
  • reading
  • silence
  • listening
  • deep attention
  • self control
  • indifference towards not important things and issues
I'd like to cite these words by G. Friedmann: "Do your own flight every day! At least just one moment which can be brief but intense. Everyday a spiritual exercise, alone or with another person desiring personal improving. Escaping the idea of duration and time. Trying to eliminate passions, vanity, fame. Avoiding gossip, pity and hate. Loving the entire community of free men/women. Becoming eternal, overcoming personal limits".

I have prepared the following brief invocation to Februus/Februa re-adapting the invocation for the land purification from Cato (De Agricoltura)

First invoking Janus, then Jupiter/Juno, then Februus/Februa with a libatio with wine. At the nd, invoke Vesta
"Februus/Februa I invoke you and I ask you to be propitious to me, to my family, to my house. I offer to you this wine so that you will keep diseases, desolation and all visible/invisible harms out of our bodies, spirits and souls. Give well-being to me, to my family and to this house. purify me, my family and my house".

Other festivities:
  • february 13th - 21st - Parentalia
  • february 15th - Lupercalia
  • february 17th - Quirinalia
  • february 21st - Feralia
  • february 23rd - Terminalia
  • february 24th - Regifugium
  • february 27th - Equiria
  • february 28th - Februalia

Febbraio

  • 13-21 febbraio - Parentalia
  • 15 febbraio - Lupercalia
  • 17 febbraio - Quirinalia
  • 21 febbraio - Feralia
  • 23 febbraio - Terminalia
  • 24 febbraio - Regifugium
  • 27 febbraio - Equiria
  • 28 febbraio - Februalia

Evocatio

The latin term "evocatio" is very often quite misconceived: this name originated the word "evocation". In the religious sphere we can frequently find that "some rites have been performed to evoke a given God/Goddess" to describe that some rites have been done to call that God/Goddess, to reveal a Deity. In brief the verb "to evoke" is used to invoke: an evocation is a form of invocation.

The term evocatio has, on the contrary, a rather opposite meaning also involving a precise rite (as in the case of the "devotio"): evocare, among the rites of the Traditional Roman Spirituality, implies a precise sense and meaning and it is therefore important to use this term in a correct way in order to avoid misunderstanding and confusion.
Evocatio is a very complex and peculiar rite, to be used only in specific conditions, through which one or more Divine Forces, protecting and/or permeating a site, a building, groups of people or individuals, are removed and moved somewhere else. This means that places or people can be deprived of their Divine support: this support, once removed, have to be placed in another site well accepted by the Divine Force involved in the rite of evocatio.

Evocatio implies a well defined certo carmen. The term evocatio is linked to the idea of Vox: this is therefore a spiritual process where the Divine Forces and Energies involved must be clearly identified, named and expressed. This involves remarkable skills in acknowledging and indentifying these forces cited in the rite of evocatio, a deep understanding of the names and characteristics of these forces because they must be clearly cited and described with no space to errors.

Evocatio shows some analogies with the rite of ex-auguratio. Both cases are based on the idea that we can find Divine Forces everywhere . In the rite of ex-auguratio the operator asks these forces to leave a given place in order to give space to other forces. In the evocatio there is a dramatic removal, a transfer of a force from a place to another, an emptying, a cosmic weakening.

The rite of evocatio must be extremely precise and cannot be improvised or executed by improvised operators because, among others, it involves the Science of the Names and the Science of Signatures. These Sciences, whose complex details cannot be described here, are at the base of the knwoledge and exact pronunciation of the true Gods'/Goddesses' names, the true names of the Divine Forces, of the arcane Energies of the Nature, of the sacred things and the living beings.

Evocatio firstly implies the identification (interpretatio) of one or more Deities to be evoked but however comparable to those of the Roman Tradition. Being comparable means not only a similarity for example in names and functions. Deities not comparable or inconsistent with the Traditional Roman Spirituality are those unable to provide any benefit, constrasting the Traditional ethos. They cannot be evoked and therefore they "cease", their functions are extinguished and their places and qualities cease to be sacred (because they originally weren't sacred)

Evocatio then implies a votum or an exchange based on an offer. The formula is as follows:

precor ueneror ueniamque a uobis peto...
( I pray, beseech, and earnestly entreat that...)

then:

Si ita feceritis, uoueo uobis...
(If ye will do this, I promise to...)

The uotum is linked to an obtestatio with three gestures:
  • touching the chest during the uotum with the right hand (gesture dedicated to Fides and personal obligation)
  • touching the ground (invoking as witness the Mother Earth)
  • raising the hands to the Sky (invoking as witness Jupiter)

Tellus Mater (manibus terram tangit)
teuqe, Iuppiter (manus ad caelum tollit)
obtestor

Now the operator has to observe the signa to verify if the vota have been accepted or not (the Divine Force involved may decide not to accept the vota and therefore not to be evoked)..

In conclusion it is important to remark tha the evocatio is not a magical ritual, but a real religious rite which has to be performed with precise aims and scopes. As already mentioned, this is a rite not viable to profane or not-initiated people. I however hope that this clarification will be useful for a correct use of this kind of terms in the religious domain. In the future, while performing our rites, we will think very carefully before "evoking" a God or a Goddess.
