When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

Sacred Trees: the Oak

The Oak is a tree consacrated to Jupiter, a God inspiring September. Actually, according to a more ancient and original tradition, the oak is mainly linked to Juno, Jupiter's female polarity. The original Oak's Goddess is Dione (Dia-Rhea-Gaia): from this name it derives the name Juno.

This tree had, and still has, a critical oracular role and dendromancy is often made by some prophetesses who interpret the Oak's murmur. According to the myth, King Numa consulted the nymph Egeria as an oracle and Egeria is a Driad. Driads are the Oaks' Nymphs: they give life to these trees being also the spirits of these trees. Driads, who live under the oaks' cortex, have the same function of the Genius for a man and the Juno for a woman. They may also leave the tree: for this reason, in the past, it was not possible to cut an oak without the augur's advice who determined if the Driad of that oak had left the tree or not.

Amadriads are the Oaks' deeper spirits: they never leave the tree and they die when their tree dies. In the past people thought that if an oak was in danger Amadriads would have emitted their menacing laments.

The Oak's Authority, as queen among the trees, is the reason why many woods of oaks are dedicated to Juno: the Oaks' authority was also highlighted by the fact that the Roman Emperors had on their heads a crown made of oak leaves consacrated to Jupiter Capitolinus. In Rome the Celius hill was named "the oak woods mountain": here there was a temple consacrated to Jupiter as the Lord of the Oaks and closer there was a small temple consacrated to the Amadriads. The Aedes of Vesta was surrounded by oaks from which the Vestals took the wood necessary for the Sacred Fire. In Preneste the Temple of Fortuna had a sacred area devoted to divination: the oracle's indications were written over oak leaves.

If woods are sacred sites, oak woods are even more sacred: they are the "sanctuaries" by definition and the Temples, with their columns, are a representation of woods and glades.

Traditional Hermetic Simbology

In the past, "longevity", both in material and in meta-physical terms, was the primary oaks' sacred feature: these trees were called "the First Mothers" (as other trees, in the Latin language oak is a female name) and they represented a microcosm also because hosting not only "the Invisibles" but also a large number of sacred animals. In particular the oak is the place where usually the woodpecker lives (a fundamental bird for the auspices). According to the myth, Picus (the Ancient King-Augur) was transformed into a woodpecker by Circe: Picus was married to Canens, Janus' daughter, who, when singing, was able to "make the trees walk". The woodpecker is thus a prophet-bird: a woodpecker brought food to Romolus and Remus in their cavern. Faunus, Picus' and Canens' son, has prophet powers, but, in order to obtain his indications, it is necessary to tie him to an oak.

It's important also to remind that the tree from which the Golden Bough is taken is an Oak (a holm oak) which is defined as the "resurrection tree" because it permits to enter and escape the Inferi. The Golden Bough is of course the "Initiation Light" being the way to prevail over the Darkness. It is also important to provide some very brief information about the role of the oak in the Sacred Science: a spring of Living Water flows from a hollow oak.

Of course these myths, terms and this symbology must be considered within a hermetic perspective.

All this can contribute to understand from the one hand the importance the Oak's role plays, as Sacred Tree, in the Traditional Roman Religion still today: on the other hand it explains the christians' fierceness (in the past but even today) against these trees. This explains for example why many christians monasteries and churches were built inside the woods just to remove the cults practiced in the past to this and other trees: a cult we has the duty to keep alive today.

TO THE MOTHERS-OAKS (invocation)

Man, do not cut
the Acorns' Mother.
Save the Oaks.

It is an ancient adage
for which Oaks are for us
the First Mothers.

Jupiter

Being September a month devoted to Jupiter, I think that it could be useful to provide some first brief details about this complex and fundamental Divine Force.

Jupiter, as well as his female polarity Juno, shows a large number of complex religious meanings and implications linked first of all to the sacralization of the idea of Authority. For this reason he represents the concept of State in social, political, juridical, religious and metaphysical sense. The term "State" comes from the Latin word status meaning "stable", "immobile" in opposition to "chaotic", "changing", dis-order".

Just considering only this first aspect, it's clear enough that Jupiter means Centrality, Polarity, Regality: he is a Centre, a Stability Focus, a Divine Stone, Divine Height, Justice.

Temples dedicated to Jupiter are usually placed on high sites. Here Jupiter is represented sitting on a throne: his primary symbology involves the fact to be sitting and the stone throne itself as symbols of stability and imperturbability as Centre.

Porphyry in the fragment 3 of his work "On Imagines" provides us with a clear interpretation of the Jupiter's symbology.

'Now look at the wisdom of the Greeks, and examine it as follows. The authors of the Orphic hymns supposed Zeus to be the mind of the world, and that he created all things therein, containing the world in himself. Therefore in their theological systems they have handed down their opinions concerning him thus:'

Zeus was the first, Zeus last, the lightning's lord,
Zeus head, Zeus centre, all things are from Zeus.
Zeus born a male, Zeus virgin undefiled;
Zeus the firm base of earth and starry heaven;
Zeus sovereign, Zeus alone first cause of all:
One power divine, great ruler of the world,
One kingly form, encircling all things here,
Fire, water, earth, and ether, night and day;
Wisdom, first parent, and delightful Love:
For in Zeus' mighty body these all lie.
His head and beauteous face the radiant heaven
Reveals and round him float in shining waves
The golden tresses of the twinkling stars.
On either side bulls' horns of gold are seen,
Sunrise and sunset, footpaths of the gods.
His eyes the Sun, the Moon's responsive light;
His mind immortal ether, sovereign truth,
Hears and considers all; nor any speech,
Nor cry, nor noise, nor ominous voice escapes
The ear of Zeus, great Kronos' mightier son:
Such his immortal head, and such his thought.
His radiant body, boundless, undisturbed
In strength of mighty limbs was formed thus:
The god's broad-spreading shoulders, breast and back
Air's wide expanse displays; on either side
Grow wings, wherewith throughout all space he flies.
Earth the all-mother, with her lofty hills,
His sacred belly forms; the swelling flood
Of hoarse resounding Ocean girds his waist.
His feet the deeply rooted ground upholds,
And dismal Tartarus, and earth's utmost bounds.
All things he hides, then from his heart again
In godlike action brings to gladsome light.

Zeus, therefore, is the whole world, animal of animals, and god of gods; but Zeus, that is, inasmuch as he is the mind from which he brings forth all things, and by his thoughts creates them. When the theologians had explained the nature of god in this manner, to make an image such as their description indicated was neither possible, nor, if any one thought of it, could he show the look of life, and intelligence, and forethought by the figure of a sphere.

But they have made the representation of Zeus in human form, because mind was that according to which he wrought, and by generative laws brought all things to completion; and he is seated, as indicating the steadfastness of his power: and his upper parts are bare, because he is manifested in the intellectual and the heavenly parts of the world; but his feet are clothed, because he is invisible in the things that lie hidden below. And he holds his sceptre in his left hand, because most close to that side of the body dwells the heart, the most commanding and intelligent organ: for the creative mind is the sovereign of the world. And in his right hand he holds forth either an eagle, because he is master of the gods who traverse the air, as the eagle is master of the birds that fly aloft - or a victory, because he is himself victorious over all things.'

Giove

Zeus nato maschio, Zeus vergine incontaminata;
Zeus la base fissa della terra e del cielo stellato;
Fuoco, acqua, terra, ed etere, notte e giorno;

Rivela e attorno a lui galleggiano nelle brillanti onde

I suoi occhi il Sole, la luce di riflesso della Luna;
La sua mente etere immortale, verità suprema
Sente e considera tutto; né alcun discorso,
L'ampia distesa dell'aria mostra; su entrambi i lati

September

The name of this month derives from the fact to be the 7th month in the ancient calendar, beginning on March, of King Numa.

September is dedicated to Jupiter (Iuppiter means "God Father") representing the sacralization of Authority in particular social and public authority, like his female polarity Juno.

Jupiter thus represents the State and the Family as social institutions. He represents, as cosmic energy, the sky, the rain, the snow, the lightning and the dew.

Sacred animals to Jupiter are the eagle and the vulture.
Sacred tree to Jupiter is the Oak: Jupiter may manifest himself through the whoosh of the oak's leaves

Jupiter has a long list of appellations (Indigitamenta) among which Lucetius (Light's Origin), Pluvius (raining), Fulgurator (Day Lightning) Summanus (Night Lightning), Pantocrator (Lord of anything), Trioculos (with three eyes), Prodigalis (prodigies Liberator), Penninus (Lord of peaks).

The main Jupiter's symbol is the Lightning.

The calendar for September mainly involves  great public festivals and rites such as the Ludi Magni the most important aristocracy's ludi.

As private rites we can however cite:

  • 10 september - Epulum Iovis: festivity celebrated to remind the fundation of the Temple of Iupiter in the Capitolium. It can be offered a rich meal citing also the Deities of the first triad (Mars and Quirinus) and the second triad (Minerua and Juno)
  • 20 september - Romolus' Dies Natalis:  this day can be celebrated with a domestic rite offering figs.
  • 26 september - Venus Genitrix: this day is dedicated to Venus as mother of the entire roman people and defender of the Cultores worldwide
  • 27 september - Fortuna Redux: "she bringing home" is celebrated for those friends and relatives living far away and to favor a safe journey back home.

Settembre

Come festività private possiamo ricordare tuttavia:

The Moon - Diana

  Lunae, Tymiana aromata

Audi dea regina, lucifera, diva Luna
Tauricornis Mene, noctu currens, aerivaga,
nocturna, facitenens, puella, bene stellata, Luna,
quae crecis et decrecis, foeminaque et mas,
fulgens, equorum amatrix, temporis mater, fructifera,
electris, iracunda, splendoris causa nocturna,
omnispica, vigilarum amatrix, pulchris syderibus abundans,
quiete gaudens et delectatione beatifica,
lucida, laetitiae datrix, perfectrix nocis oblectamentum,
astritenens, latipeple, vagi cursus, sapietissima puella:
venias beata, benevola, pulchristella, lumine tuo
micans, conservans tuos supplices, proba puella

Through these words, Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) donated us this beautiful Orphic Hymn. Ficino, a man of the Renaissance and great expert of Ars Regia, of course doesn't describe the Moon as Earth's satellite or astronomical object but rather as metaphysical entity having great symbolic and religious importance and value.

As I have already superficially mentioned with regards to the Sun, the same it can be said about the Moon for which exists an antique theology and theurgy. While July is entirely biased on the Sun (Apollo), August is totally focused on the Moon (Diana) and on her extremely complex and deep symbology and meaning. It's very difficult to provide here adequate explanations about this Lunar theology and theurgy (and after all I have a rather limited knowledge about it), but in my opinion some brief indications (even if very superficial) can be useful to better understand on the one hand the role of the Moon in the Traditional Roman Religion and on the other hand some implications, meaning and value of the Cult of Diana, focus of this important month in the sacred calendar. I believe that a Cultor/Cultrix should have even a minimal knowledge about this complex issue as well as that related to the Sun: any further detail can be obtained contacting an Augur (who by definition has a sound expertize about these topics - surely better than mine).

The Moon is part of the Foundamental Duality (Sun - Moon) deriving from the Original Matter (Chaos, the Unity, Uroboros). The Moon Force embraces and embodies the Female Energy, the Water, the Dragon. This is a Transformation Energy, the Change, the Continuing Mutation, a Wild and Savage Force. While the Solar Dimension is the Dimension of "Being", the sub-lunar one is the Dimension of "Becoming".
At this level, the Sun expresses the Red, the Fire (but as flamma non urens).
The Moon, at the same level, expresses the White, the Light, the Knowledge.

The symbolic planets' structure (which has nothing in common with the modern astronomical order) is as follows (please note the role of the number 7 - the spiral of the sacred snake):

Saturn: lead
Jupiter: bronze
Mars: iron
Sun: gold
Venus: copper
Mercury: mercury
Moon: silver

The triad of the Male Deities is placed above (Uranian) and symmetrically in opposition to the Female Triad (below, ctonia, infera) having at the centre the Sun. The result is a spiral path (upward-downward) moving from Saturn and arriving in the Sun and viceversa. Thus the Moon is the first step in the infernal stage of the cosmic cycle as wild dissolving force (solve) freeing energy. In the Commentarium in Somnium Scipionis Macrobius describes how Saturn (ratiocinatio) is dissolved in the Moon or how the logic conscience sinks in the vital energy.

Being the Moon "Magical Light" ("Shining Light in the middle of the Night" according to Apuleius), she is a Light "giving Life": she is White, blossom, Life (just note the importance of the Moon in agriculture...). For these features, the Moon is symbolized by a Virgin being in the same time "Mother" because she gives and turns to Life. She is also a "tide", a "Stream" but, above all, "The Flowing Flow"

The Moon is represented by a White Stone (resurrection) named Diana becoming Silver - the Living Silver (The White Rose).

As the Sun corresponds to the Solar Tree (The Tree of Knowledge), similarly the Moon corresponds to the Lunar Tree (The Tree of Life)

This symbology (extremely briefly and superficially described above) is completely translated into the Divine Dimension of Diana (in particular Diana Nemorensis and the ritual of the Rex Nemorensis). Diana is a virgo ("force not blocked by constrains"); she is a wild energy in fast and continuos movement (she is "always distant"). She gives life and death. Diana is symbolized by a white hind and by a deer whose antlers with 7 branches represent the Lunar Tree/The Tree of Life. Diana is also symbolized by the Bow representing the Crescent Moon.

The fact that Diana can embrace a so complex symbology (as all the Deities) should help us in understanding how in the past these issues were well known and shared. A greater part of this knowledge (as co-shared community heritage) has been lost and today it is likely to be preserved by just few individuals. At the same time, it shows how complex the Traditional Roman Religion can be, going beyond some simpler rites, and how articulated (in ritual and symbolic terms) the traditional Pantheon can be. It means that a deep and continuing study represents an essential step in the religious practice. Being a cultor/cultrix is not just burning some incense sticks or wearing historical clothes.

There's something more and maybe something more difficult. The Traditional Roman Religion is a Via and thanks to an adequate study, the ritual practicing, the Virtus and personal discipline, martial arts and meditation can be possible to master the Via following the Ancestors' example.

Luna - Diana

Lunae, Tymiana aromata

Audi dea regina, lucifera, diva Luna
Tauricornis Mene, noctu currens, aerivaga,
nocturna, facitenens, puella, bene stellata, Luna,
quae crecis et decrecis, foeminaque et mas,
fulgens, equorum amatrix, temporis mater, fructifera,
electris, iracunda, splendoris causa nocturna,
omnispica, vigilarum amatrix, pulchris syderibus abundans,

astritenens, latipeple, vagi cursus, sapietissima puella:
venias beata, benevola, pulchristella, lumine tuo
micans, conservans tuos supplices, proba puella

August

The original name of this month is Sextilis because it was the 6th month in the Ancient Calendar. Then it was named Augustus in honor of the Emperor Augustus.

The name "Augustus" is avery complex term: just thinking to the fact that the prefix "aug" connotates also names like "augur" or "augurium". In any case it evidences a polarization of energy.
This month is dedicated to harvest, storage and conservation (in a broader sense).

In particular August is dedicated to the Goddess Diana or the female polarity of Apollo.

Diana is defined as "Always Distant": she is a non-urban Goddess because she represents the sacralization of woods, forrests and wild places.

Her frantic dance, reserved only to women, is named "Ridda".

During the day Diana protects wild animals preserving their lives; during the night she hunts them giving them Death. In this way Diana embodies both Life and Death as deriving from an unique source.

Sacred animals to Diana are: lion, bear, deer, quail and hunting dog.

As Apollo is represented by the Sun, Diana is represented by the Moon. Her main symbol is the Bow representing the crescent moon and the "wild weapon".

Agosto

Olympic Games

Some days ago, it has been asked to me an opinion, as Cultor of the Traditional Roman Religion, about the Olympic Games (which has recently started in London).

I have to say that I like sports, but when someone asks me an opnion about the Olympic Games as Cultor I have to remind, even if very briefly and superficially, the meaning and sense that these Games have within a traditional perspective.

Olympic Games, in their original meaning, have a sacred value and, for this reason, must be included in the dimension of the Res Divinae like the Roman Ludi. Olympic Games recall the fight of the Olympic Forces, the Ancient Heroes and the Solar Forces against the most brutal forces of Nature: these Games symbolize the victory of the Celestial Deities against the Titanic Forces. Not surprisingly, according to the myth, the Olympic Games were created by Heracles and symbolized by a crown made of olive leaves.

Thus, Olympic Games are a sacred rite, a great Liturgy, which, in the past, was held according to precise rules and formulas totally dedicated to Nike, as sacralization of the Triumphant Force capable to renovate Action and Life.
The winner became the personification of Zeus.
The winner acquires a trascendant immortality, a trascendant rebirth with an absolute victory of the spiritual energy over the material body.

The capability to evoke and celebrate such Divine Forces and Energies is the reason why, in 393, the emperor Theodosius, under the pressures of the christian bishop ambrosius, decided to ban Olympic Games after more than a millennium because considered "the biggest and the most dangerous pagan rite": these Games were (correctly...) absolutely incompatible for the "monotheist" ethics.

From this brief and superficial description it is clear enough the difference with the modern olympic games. In the present games, transcendence, sacralization, the evocation of Divine Forces are totally absent. In the modern olympic games the physical, impulsive and instinctive features completely prevail. The present games begin in the human dimension and collapse in the human dimension. That's all. They are therefore the extreme expression of physical potentials: consequently they are degraded and profane manifestations of action considered as sacred and Divine expression.

I repeat: I like sports. Nonetheless, considering what I mentioned above, I think that it could be better at least to change the name of these games...

Giochi Olimpici

The Hymns of Orpheus: Apollo

In July, a month dedicated to Apollo, we can use this hymn (from the Orphic Hymns) as invocation to Apollo.

Blest Pæan, come, propitious to my pray'r,
Illustrious pow'r, whom Memphian tribes revere,
Slayer of Tityus, and the God of health,
Lycorian Phœbus, fruitful source of wealth .
Spermatic, golden-lyr'd, the field from thee

Receives it's constant, rich fertility.
Titanic, Grunian, Smynthian, thee I sing,

Python-destroying, hallow'd, Delphian king:
Rural, light-bearer, and the Muse's head,
Noble and lovely, arm'd with arrows dread:

Far-darting, Bacchian, two-fold, and divine,
Pow'r far diffused, and course oblique is thine.
O, Delian king, whose light-producing eye
Views all within, and all beneath the sky:

Whose locks are gold, whose oracles are sure,
Who, omens good reveal'st, and precepts pure:
Hear me entreating for the human kind,
Hear, and be present with benignant mind;
For thou survey'st this boundless æther all,
And ev'ry part of this terrestrial ball
Abundant, blessed; and thy piercing sight,
Extends beneath the gloomy, silent night;
Beyond the darkness, starry-ey'd, profound,
The stable roots, deep fix'd by thee are found.
The world's wide bounds, all-flourishing are thine,

Thyself all the source and end divine:
'Tis thine all Nature's music to inspire,
With various-sounding, harmonising lyre;
Now the last string thou tun'ft to sweet accord,
Divinely warbling now the highest chord;

Th' immortal golden lyre, now touch'd by thee,
Responsive yields a Dorian melody.

All Nature's tribes to thee their diff'rence owe,
And changing seasons from thy music flow
Hence, mix'd by thee in equal parts, advance

Summer and Winter in alternate dance;
This claims the highest, that the lowest string,
The Dorian measure tunes the lovely spring .
Hence by mankind, Pan-royal, two-horn'd nam'd,
Emitting whistling winds thro' Syrinx fam'd;
Since to thy care, the figur'd seal's consign'd,
Which stamps the world with forms of ev'ry kind.

Hear me, blest pow'r, and in these rites rejoice,
And save thy mystics with a suppliant voice.
