This day is dedicated to Vesta, a Great Goddess representing the sacralization of Fire preserving and maintaining life: Vesta represents also the sacralization of the Family.
Temples dedicated to Vesta have a circular shape (thus they are not oriented sites) and men are excluded there: Vesta has no human imagine but she is represented by a sacred fire which must remain always lit. This fire is extinguished and lit again on march the 1st.
In the past the priestesses Vestals were devoted to this fire's conservation: they were virgins dressed in white and they preside over the main religious rites and they had the power to pardon those sentenced to death. They were lead by the Vestal Maxima, one of the most important religious figure in the Roman Traditional Religion.
This day is thus dedicated to the family and to the sacralization of food cooking.
