The Walnut tree

The Walnut is a sacred tree to Juno, a Goddess to whom the month of June in dedicated.

According to the Roman tradition, walnuts were thrown and donated to the spouses after the ceremony of the wedding as symbolic link with Juno: furthermore, as the fruit is protected by a woody shell, this also represents the protection of Juno on the family.

Like all trees, even walnut is an "inhabited" living being: its nymph is Caria (Kar or Ker ) who gives the sacred name to this tree. From the name of the nymph Kar or Ker comes the Latin term Kerebellum (brain) also for the resemblance of the walnut fruit with the brain according to the Science of Correspondence. Walnut is used in fact for its beneficial properties especially for the brain. The kernel, because of its resemblance to the brain, is sacred to Minerva while the shell is sacred to Janus for resemblance to a boat.

Ker, Kar, Caria is also connected with Carmenta beacuse the walnut is an oracle tree: at a walnut  healers, shamans, and seers went to have inspiration, visions and prophecies. Moreover, walnut, thanks to this connection with Carmenta, is one of the fundamental trees at the base of the sacred alphabet and calendar.

 

This tree is linked also to the Great Mother: it represents life and death, light and darkness.

For all these reasons, especially because of its connection with these female Deities and Sacred Forces, Christianity has linked walnut to Satan, to sabers and witches.

Il Noce

Il Noce è un albero sacro a Giunone, una Dea cui è dedicato il mese di Giugno. 

Secondo la tradizione romana, agli sposi venivano lanciate e donate delle noci come legame simbolico con Giunone: inoltre poichè il frutto è protetto da un guscio legnoso, ciò rappresenta anche la protezione di Giunone sulla famiglia. 

Come tutti gli alberi, anche il noce è un essere vivente "abitato": la sua Ninfa è Caria (Kar o anche Ker) che dà il nome sacro a queto albero. Dal nome della ninfa Kar o Ker deriva il termine latino Kerebellum (cervello) anche per la somiglianza del frutto del noce con il cervello secondo la Scienza delle Corrispondenze. La noce viene usata infatti per le sue proprietà curative in particolare per il cervello. Il gheriglio, per la sua somiglianza con il cervello è sacro a Minerva mentre il guscio è sacro Giano per somiglianza con una barca.

Ker, Kar, Caria è anche connessa con Carmenta poichè il noce è un albero oracolare: presso un noce le curatrici, le sciamane e gli indovini si recavano per avere ispirazione, visioni e profezie. Inoltre il noce, anche grazie a questo nesso con Carmenta, è uno degli alberi fondamentali alla base dell'alfabeto e del calendario sacri.

 

Albero legato alla Grande Madre rappresenta la vita e la morte, la luce e la tenebra. 

Per tutti questi motivi, soprattutto per il suo collegamento con queste Divinità femminili, il cristianesimo ha collegato il noce a Satana, ai sabba e alle streghe.

Incense

Burning incense is probably the most "pagan" gesture  imaginable.

Incense is a resin derived from various plants mainly from the Boswellia. This plant, like other plants which produce incense, are located in the flowerbed of the Sun in the Arval Garden (Hortus) .

Burning incense is considered an offer to the Gods and Goddesses: formerly also represented an act of devotion towards the authority and sacredness of the figure of the Emperor.

Burning incense is an act with a high and complex symbolic sacred value for domestic cults. It is a typical example of "dissipation with fire": therefore, this act can be considered a real sacrifice.

The use of incense in the sacrificial household rites shows several implications. Burning incense in fact causes the generation of a dense visible smoke and pronounced perfume.

Without citing very complex details, I think it could be useful to reflect on the idea of the "smoke" and "perfume" (per-fume) related to the use of incense. Two senses in particular are involved in this act: the sight and olfaction

Incense smoke rising into the sky is primarily an elevation, an act of transcendence, a moment of connection between the human and the Celestial Deities' dimension: between Earth and Heaven. In essence, the act of burning incense with the production of a small column of perfumed smoke is materially depicts a form of "axis" along which it realizes an ascending movement. The spirals of smoke, also represented by the symbol of the spiral column, represent an expression of indirect ascension to heaven, similar to a spiral staircase or a snake: this smoke spiral thus draws symbolically a passage through the hierarchy of the various states of the Being or the representation of the degrees of Universal Existence.

The spirals of smoke from incense are released into the air and fly to the sky. This flight of smoking represents the re-union with the Divine Dimension (both for the living beings and in funeral rites) and the flight itself symbolizes the "freedom of movement", the liberation from the material sphere, the transcendence of the world or the spiritual condition.

As previously mentioned, burning incense produces a per-fume. All perfumes are econmpassed into the sphere sacred to Venus. In particular, the smell produced by incense materializes a feeling of "attractive" and seduction force intended to capture the benevolence of the divine energy: it requires an act of "divine courtesy" or the divine venia.

I will not say any more, but these brief remarks I hope can be considered as a small contribution to maintain, in a Cultor and a Cultrix, an attitude of consciousness and awakening  also in case of apparently simple and obviousl gestures as burning incense, but capable to hide complex values ​​and symbolic meanings.

Incenso

Bruciare incenso è probabilmente il gesto più "pagano" che si possa immaginare.

L'incenso è una resina che si ricava da varie piante in genere dalla Boswellia. Questa pianta, così come le altre piante da cui si ricava l'incenso, sono collocate nell'Aiuola del Sole all'interno del Giardino-Orto Arvale.

Bruciare incenso è considerato un'offerta agli Dei e alle Dee: anticamente rappresentava anche un atto di riconoscimento dell'autorità e sacralità della figura dell'Imperatore.

Bruciare incenso è un atto con un elevato e complesso valore simbolico e sacrale per i culti domestici. Si tratta di un tipico esempio di "dissipazione con il fuoco": pertanto questo atto può essere considerato un vero e proprio sacrificio.

L'uso dell'incenso nei riti sacrificali domestici presenta alcune implicazioni. La combustione dell'incenso provoca infatti la generazione di un fumo denso ben visibile e dal profumo molto pronunciato.

Senza entrare in dettagli molto complessi, penso sia utile riflettere sull'idea del "fumo" e del "pro-fumo" legati all'uso dell'incenso. Due sensi in particolare sono coinvolti in questo atto: la vista e l'odorato

Il fumo dell'incenso che sale verso il cielo rappresenta in primo luogo un'elevazione, un atto di trascendenza, un momento di collegamento fra la dimensione umana e quella delle Divinità Celesti: fra Terra e Cielo. In sostanza, nell'atto di bruciare l'incenso con la produzione di una piccola colonna di fumo profumato si raffigura materialmente una forma di "asse" lungo il quale si realizza un movimento ascendente. Le spirali del fumo, rappresentate anche dal simbolo della colonna tortile, rappresentano tuttavia un'espressione di ascensione verso il cielo indiretta, più simile ad una scala a chiocciola o ad un serpente: questo fumo a spirale disegna pertanto simbolicamente il passaggio attraverso la gerarchia dei vari stati dell'essere ovvero la rappresentazione dei gradi dell'Esistenza Universale.

Le spirali del fumo prodotte dall'incenso si liberano nell'aria e volano verso il cielo. Questo volo del fumo rappresenta il ricongiungimento con la Dimensione Divina (sia per i viventi che nei riti funerari) ed il volo stesso simboleggia la "libertà di movimento", la liberazione dalla materialità, la trascendenza del Mondo ovvero la condizione spirituale. 

Come menzionato precedentemente, bruciando incenso si produce un pro-fumo. Tutti i profumi rientrano nella dimensione sacralizzata dalla forza di Venere. In questo caso in particolare, il profumo prodotto dall'incenso materializza un sentimento "accattivante" destinato a catturare la benevolenza, l'avvicinamento propizio della forza divina: si richiede un atto di "cortesia divina" ovvero la venia divina.

Non voglio dilungarmi oltre: ma queste brevi considerazioni spero possano essere un piccolo contributo a mantenere nel Cultor e nella Cultrix un atteggiamento sempre consapevole, uno stato di veglia anche relativamente ad atti apparentemente semplici e banali, come bruciare l'incenso, ma che invece possono nascondere complessi valori e significati simbolici. 

 

The Flowerbed of Saturn

The Flowerbed of Saturn is another important component of the Sacred Garden and for the Hortus Arvalis.

Saturn is connected to a cold and dry energy. In the human body the energy of Saturn is located in the skeleton, nails, teeth, joints.

In the plant world the energy of Saturn is primarily placed in the roots of herbs, plants and trees.

In thw flowerbed of Saturn are placed many solanaceae poisonous plants such as mandrake, stramonium, hellebore, aconite, hemlock. There are also some sedative and analgesic plants such as the "devil's claw", hemp, amaranth.

The tree sacred to Saturn is by definition the willow.

L'aiuola di Saturno

L'Aiuola di Saturno è un'altra componente importante del Giardino Sacro e dell'Hortus Arvalis.

Saturno è connesso ad un'energia fredda e secca. Nel corpo umano questa energia saturnale si trova nello scheletro, nelle unghie, nei denti, nelle articolazioni. 

Nel mondo vegetale l'energia di Saturno si trova essenzialmente nelle radici di erbe, piante ed alberi.

Nell'aiuola di Saturno vengono collocate le piante velenose solinacee come la mandragola, lo stramonio, l'elleboro, l'aconito, la cicuta. Vi sono poi alcune piante sedative e antidolorifiche come l'artiglio del diavolo, la canapa, l'amaranto.

L'albero sacro a Saturno è per definizione il Salice. 

December - Saturn

December derives its name from the fact to be the 10th month of the king Numa's ancient calendar which begins on March. 

 

December represents the "depth", the origins, the Antique and Primordial Time: the beginning of Time. This is a very particular month focused essentially on the festivities and rites of Saturnalia and Divalia (dec. 21st). If Janus represents the beginning, Saturnus (to which December is dedicated) represents the "end".

During December Nature turns her energies back to Earth: a cycle ends as precondition for the opening of the next one. This is a period of Death, not in a profane sense, praparing a re-generation time. The Ianua Coeli open in December.

 

Main festivities are:

• 1 december - Bona Dea
• 5 december - Faunalia
• 10 december - Janus' Agonalia
• 15 december- Consualia
• 17 december- Opalia
• 18 - 22 december- Saturnalia
• 21 december- Divalia
• 25 december- Sol Invictus

As already mentioned, the entire month of December is completely inspired by Saturn, an extremely complex Divine Force. According to Macrobius, great mysteries were hidden in the Saturnalia rites.

 

Saturn is a titanic divine force deriving from the union between the Sky and the Earth in symbolic, hermetic and esoteric meanings.

In this meaning (and only in this not-profane meaning) Saturn is "the Ancient", he symbolizes a primordial state, the Saturnia Regna - the Golden Age/Satya-yuga - the beginning of the Sacred Time. With Saturn, the vital energy of the Earth ceases to be linked to Chaos.

Saturn is evirated (separation from power) and chased away by Jupiter. For this reason Saturn hid himeself in Latium and then he disappeared from the Earth. With Jupiter the Age of Silver begins followed by the Age of Bronze and Iron.

 

Saturn is at the base of the Roman Tradictional doctrine of the "Cycles": he represents the Cyclical Death presupposing the beginning of a new cycle. Being hidden in Latium, the Traditional Roman Religion directly derives from the primordial traditional wisdom and knowledge of the Golden Age.

Saturn is the guardian of the secrets of Agriculture (Sator - he cultivating) and navigation (in esoteric sense): he is a Divine Force connected to the "Depth", the Underworld.

All the altars are sacred to Saturn. The ara in the past was just an ara graminacea or a clod of grass and Saturn represents also the primordial fire. During the Saturnalia candles were lit dedicated to the Superior Saturnali to be placed upon the altars.

According to a hermetic perspective, Saturn is symbolized by Lead (Reverse Gold) as expression of the "Matter". Lead and Gold are both generated by the same Force of Saturn. He brings a sickle as symbol of Dissolution and a compasses as symbol of Coagulation.

From Saturn the spyral initiation process begins: for this reason it is considered the most important step because representing the "primordial matter" without any form of derivation.

 

This explains the sentence: "find the hidden Gold in Saturn". This may explain also the reason why the treasury of the Roman State was placed in the Temple of Saturn. 

Orphic Hymn to Kronos/Saturn (offering incense)

Etherial father, mighty Titan, hear,

Great fire of Gods and men, whom all revere:
Endu'd with various council, pure and strong,
To whom perfection and decrease belong.
Consum'd by thee all forms that hourly die,
By thee restor'd, their former place supply;
The world immense in everlasting chains,
Strong and ineffable thy pow'r contains
Father of vast eternity, divine,
O mighty Saturn, various speech is thine:
Blossom of earth and of the starry skies,
Husband of Rhea, and Prometheus wife.

Obstetric Nature, venerable root,
From which the various forms of being shoot;
No parts peculiar can thy pow'r enclose,
Diffus'd thro' all, from which the world arose,
O, best of beings, of a subtle mind,
Propitious hear to holy pray'rs inclin'd;
The sacred rites benevolent attend,
And grant a blameless life, a blessed end.

Porphiry, in Perì Agalmàton, writes that Saturn shows a lazy, slow and cold force: for this reason he is linked to the Force of Time. He is represented standing up and white haired to highlight that Time brings the Old Age.

Saturn is placed, in the circular disposition of the "Peripheral Stripe" by Nigidius Figulus, the 14th house in the last quarter of the Dii Dextri between West and North.

Jamblicus, in the "On the Egyptian Mysteries", describes Saturn as a condensation force linked to solidification and cold. Saturn is an emanation which can be both beneficial and harmful because it brings rigidity. According to the Tradition, Saturn may cause laziness, physical deformities and abnormalities, deviousness in thoughts, anger.

Arval Implications

Saturn, being a Divine Force at the base of Agriculture, is for this reason a God bringing Civilization. He is at the base of the Art of Agriculture, inspires the Relations with the Earth and how cultivating fields as principle of Civilization for a Society. 

This explains why in this period of the year dedicated to Saturn we find and feel the presence of important agricultural Forces such as Consus and Ops. In this period of the year we must be prepared for the future harvests sacralizing the "neverending nourishment" of Ops (Abundance).
