When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

Pillole di Saggezza Antica 17 - Tips of Ancient Wisdom 17

Furthermore, as this seems to be advanced as the surest basis for our belief in the existence of Gods, that there is no race so uncivilized, no one in the world, we are told, so barbarous that his mind has no inkling of a belief in gods: (...); nevertheless all men think that a divine power and divine nature exist, and that is not the result of human conference or convention, it is not belief established by regulation or by statute, but in every inquiry the unanimity of the races of the world must be regarded as a law of nature.

November

November, whose name derives from the fact to be the 9th month in the ancient calendar beginning in March, represents a period of "Interiority".

November is focused on the flowing of the natural energy returning back underground during winter. This period is dedicated to Infernal underworld Gods and Goddesses (Inferi) from who derives the energy for the creatures on the surface.

November is thus dedicated to Pluto (Underworld Jupiter) whose name means "extremely rich", and to Proserpina (the Girl walking like snakes). Pluto represents the deep, Proserpina the vital force nourishing life in spring.

Black animals, cypress and narcissus are sacred to Pluto. He may be invoked beating the hands on the ground.

Pomegranate tree and poppy are sacred to Proserpina who protects also funerals.

Novembre

Grapevine and Wine

The month of October, dedicated to Pomona, is a period full of farming and harvesting activities. This is the reason why Pomona and Vertumnus are the reference of this sacred moment during which the gifts that nature offers us can be harvested. Life itself is a gift that given to us by Nature, destined to return to Nature.

Among the various agricultural harvesting activities in this period, it must highlighted the grapevine harvestof. I would like therefore to spend few considerations on grapevine and wine, not in botanical or technical terms, but in the symbolic and agricultural meaning (in the most sacred of this term).

The grapevine is a plant "full" of the Dionysius-Bacchos energy: a crown of intertwined vines  is a symbol of Dionysus. Its sister plant is the 'ivy. The Grape symbolizes Abundance - in the broadest sense possible: immortality for the Gods and Goddesses, health for mortals.

The grapevine, however, is primarily the "plant of Rhea", the Great Mother, whose statues are made with grapevine wood. The presence of columns made of grapevine wood or spiral columns are symbols of the Great Mother Rhea, generating and feeding Goddess (Alma Mater). To the Great Mother Rhea are sacred those plants with leaves with five peaks, thus including the grapevine: these leaves symbolize the "green hand": on each toe, finger or the leaf, there is a letter, the initial the name of the five Deae Matronae, declinations of the attributes of Rhea.

The vine therefore symbolizes generation, nurturing, the immortality of the cycles of nature, the feminine energy and force of Nature. Anyone who knows this plant knows how much strength and energy may be contained in the vine. The vine ("Curved Queen") symbolizes the feminine serpentine force, unraveling like a snake around an axis. This relationship is described by the dependence of the vine from the elm (tutor).

Wine triggers the "orgiastic power," the release of the irrational and the unconscious, temporary madness, liberation from the bonds of "normality": these are elements connected to the Dionysian sphere. All the myths related to Dionysus see the symbolic presence of the vine, grapes and wine and the whole cycle of the vine and wine in turn represent the same myth of this God. The cultivation of grapes and wine production is a divine gift: the wine is not just a drink, but it is a "living creature", bubbling, fermenting, that "lives even in winter", symbolizing the blood of Dionysus, in a continuos transformation. Wine is also the blood, the lymph of the Earth's depths: this condition links wine to the underworld of the Dead.

Wine rouses the erotic sphere (Venus): in the botanical geography of the hand, the vine is located at the base of the thumb.

Wine can become a mean of communication with the Gods and Goddesses both in oracular - through the delirium caused by drunkenness - and in symbolic terms because it represents the blood, conveying the generating energy: a gift given to us we must that we must return. For this wine is a central element of libatio as fundamental form of sacrifice.

In the Hortus Arvalis, the vine, plant rich of energy, is located in the flowerbed of Mars.

Pomona

During summer we have received and enjoyed a large number and variety of fruits and vegetables from our gardens. Also Autumn, and particulalry October, is a period of harvesting. Just think about the grape harvest or the olive harvest which donate us wine and oil: these products are extremely important also for the Traditional Roman Religion being "Divine Gifts" of the Nature and linked to well defined Goddesses.

This period of harvest must be hence devoted to the sacralization of this fundamental force of the Nature which gives us so many fruits, essential for our life and health. The sacralization of this force is Pomona.

Pomona in the past had a specific Flamen (Flamen Pomonalis) but she has not a fixed festivity but rather a mobile festivity because it depends on the harvest maturation. It is represented, also according to the Ancient Tradition, through a wickler basket of fruits and vegetables.

Pomona is defined as "The Beneficial": she gives protection in particular to the fruit trees. Fruits are thus "Pomona's Gifts". She is linked to Vertumnus representing the sacralization of the seasons' changing and passing.

It's important to remind that the Latin term fructus doesn't mean "fruit", but "reward", "payoff", "benefit".

Fructus is the benefit deriving from the Earth and Nature goods. Fructuosus is what is fertile and fruitful: Pomona gives benefits and consequently fruits.

"Fruit" in Latin is translated with pomum: the fruit tree is translated into pomus.

I have created, with some fragments of a Homeric Hymn and a Orphic Hymn, this hymn to be used while offering fruits to Pomona in order to receive her benefits. Pomona reminds us also the semplicity and the richness of the Nature and her continuos flowing. Pomona helps us in acquiring this awareness.

Invocation to Pomona

Through You, women and men are blessed in their children

and blessed in their harvests,

To you it belongs to give means of life to mortal women and men

and to take it away

Happy are the woman and the man you delight to honour!
You have all things abundantly
and the  vital land is laden with fruits
and our house is filled with good things
bestow upon me for this my song
with beneficial prosperity

For You
With rapid whirl, eternal and divine
the perfect Nature
moves with powerful rhythm

You Blessed, matures sweet fruits
and with your beneficial spirit
supports fruitful seasons.

Pomona

Invocazione a Pomona

Hai in abbondanza ogni cosa
La Terra vitale si carica di frutti
Premia benigna il mio canto
con benefica prosperità

Per Te
il mondo ben costruito
per legge eterna
si muove con ritmo possente

Matura, o Dea beata, i dolcissimi frutti

October

October represents the last month in the active sacred year: it symbolizes a period of intense spirituality. During this period Nature tends to a phase of cyclical death.

I dedicate this month to the Goddess Pomona, the sacralization of Fruits and Harvests, because this is a period of harvests (grapes, olives, etc.) and because we give thanks to Nature for what it has been harvested during summer.

October in the past was characterized by many important festivities: first of all the Ludi Augustales (7 - 13) and the Ludi Capitolini (15). The former were related to the Emperor Augustus who become "Divus" (in a next post I will analyze the concept of "Divus" distinct from the concept of "Deus").

Ludi Capitolini were related to the chasing away of the Gauls from the Capitol. It's important to note that these festivities were celebrated with Ludi or rituals linked to the Goddess Vittoria.

The complex ritual of the celebration of the October Equus cannot be described here.

On October 10th Meditrinalia were celebrated: Meditrinalia were "curative" rituals during which new wine was used during a libatio expressing the following formula: "novum vinum libo, novo veteri morbo medeor" (I make this libatio with new wine to cure old diseases with the "new")

On October 12th the ancient festivity of Fontinalia is celebrated - the festivity of "underground and invisible springs". This festivity is dedicated to Fons/Fontus (son/
daughter of Janus) and it is linked to springs and wells where invisible waters become visible. Springs, fountains and wells are decorated with wreaths and flowers are put in the rivers.

October 15th: October Equus.

On October 19th Armilustrium was celebrated: swords, shields and spears were purified and closed in the Temple of Mars after the end of the military year (which begins on march the 9th).

Ottobre

15 ottobre: complessa festa e rituale dell' "October Equus".

Incense

Burning incense is probably the most "pagan" gesture  imaginable.
Incense is a resin derived from various plants mainly from the Boswellia. This plant, like other plants which produce incense, are located in the flowerbed of the Sun in the Arval Garden (Hortus) .

Burning incense is considered an offer to the Gods and Goddesses: formerly also represented an act of devotion towards the authority and sacredness of the figure of the Emperor.

Burning incense is an act with a high and complex symbolic sacred value for domestic cults. It is a typical example of "dissipation with fire": therefore, this act can be considered a real sacrifice.

The use of incense in the sacrificial household rites shows several implications. Burning incense in fact causes the generation of a dense visible smoke and pronounced perfume.

Without citing very complex details, I think it could be useful to reflect on the idea of the "smoke" and "perfume" (per-fume) related to the use of incense. Two senses in particular are involved in this act: the sight and olfaction

Incense smoke rising into the sky is primarily an elevation, an act of transcendence, a moment of connection between the human and the Celestial Deities' dimension: between Earth and Heaven. In essence, the act of burning incense with the production of a small column of perfumed smoke is materially depicts a form of "axis" along which it realizes an ascending movement. The spirals of smoke, also represented by the symbol of the spiral column, represent an expression of indirect ascension to heaven, similar to a spiral staircase or a snake: this smoke spiral thus draws symbolically a passage through the hierarchy of the various states of the Being or the representation of the degrees of Universal Existence.

The spirals of smoke from incense are released into the air and fly to the sky. This flight of smoking represents the re-union with the Divine Dimension (both for the living beings and in funeral rites) and the flight itself symbolizes the "freedom of movement", the liberation from the material sphere, the transcendence of the world or the spiritual condition.

As previously mentioned, burning incense produces a per-fume. All perfumes are econmpassed into the sphere sacred to Venus. In particular, the smell produced by incense materializes a feeling of "attractive" and seduction force intended to capture the benevolence of the divine energy: it requires an act of "divine courtesy" or the divine venia.

I will not say any more, but these brief remarks I hope can be considered as a small contribution to maintain, in a Cultor and a Cultrix, an attitude of consciousness and awakening  also in case of apparently simple and obviousl gestures as burning incense, but capable to hide complex values and symbolic meanings.

Incenso

Prometheus and the problem of the "myth"

A reader of this blog and blogger (she is also a Cultrix with a good knowledge of the Sacred Science), asked me to write some thoughts on the myth of Prometheus. It is a very important issue as that of Prometheus is one of the myths of the Greek tradition at the base of the ancient traditional religiosity, among which we find the Traditional Roman Spirituality .

It is a very complex and difficult myth: therefore I needed a long time before writing this post.

The main difficulty comes from the fact that this myth, like all myths in their more authentic meaning, value and role, are stories, narratives, groups of words related to the Gods and Goddesses with a strong religious foundation, destined to a small group of initiated persons. A myth is aimed to transmit a secret knowledge not accessbile to ordinary people. In the myth, everything is alien to the profane.

The object of the mythical story consists of deep and hidden truths of the existence - a secret theology - whose narration is not aimed to captivate a potential audience, but to provoke and dissuade if composed of not-initiated.

Sometimes the mythical story is expressed in riddles, enigmas, that add additional sacred value : I stress the term "story" (Vox), since the transfer of the myth in writing is already a first form of desecration, profanation. This is why the myth is never a dogma: it appears fluid with a range of versions because filtered by the spirituality of those who, once understood in its deepest essence, can articulate it the level of logos.

For this reason, the formal reading of a mythical tale for the profane and/or for modern looks like a fairy tale "nonsense" for the most foolish, contradictory and incomprehensible.

The mythical story is never clear and it can not be as such: it is contradictory, the true and the false are confused, symbols, paradoxes, meanings, allegories, riddles, levels of understanding are difficult to discern. The more the myth speaks of the immediate, natural, elementary and basic truth, the harder it will grasp its meaning. Its most authentic message is then accessbile only after a long process of inner preparation. The myth is therefore the land on which it grows the traditional spirituality of a Cultor and a Cultrix.

If this applies to all myths, this is particularly true for the myth of Prometheus which is a "foundation" myth.

Based on these premises, it becomes really difficult for me to "write" something about the myth of Prometheus, to explain this or that. What can I write? I have a so limited knowledge of these topics in this deep perspective. Some things were told to me, and others I have always been advised to not talk about it. Let alone write about it on a blog: it could give rise to many misconceptions and misunderstandings. Just think that the epithet is given to Pandora - the Woman - as "Beautiful Evil", the poisoned  gift ("Gift of all the Gods") that the Divine gave to the humanity as a punishment.

The only thing I can do is to invite Cultores and Cultrices to read between the lines of the myth, to think about its deeper meanings. I can only emphasize that this myth at the end describes the human condition in an intermediate level between the Divine and the animals, the characteristic of humanity to fluctuate between cunning and stupidity (Prometheus and Epimetheus), the definition of the basic rites, the birth of civil institutions (eg. the marriage), the role of the agricultural practices, the fact that everything related to humanity is precarious and requires support (human fire and Divine Fire), etc ...

But the thing that maybe is more useful to highlight is how this myth is focused on the idea of "hiding", to "conceal", the deception of appearances. We live in a world where good and evil are intimately linked and hidden inside each other. As the yin and yang the benefits are hidden and intersected in evil and vice versa. Nature appears in this way to humanity: there is a veil of deception, of illusion that makes us unable to see what is behind the reality.

Wisdom (in the deepest and authentic sense of the term) is the only way to dispel appearances and being able to distinguish the "real" reality without falling into deception.
We have to remain along the Via.

September - Jupiter

It is possible to find some brief information about some religious aspect of September in a previous post here
Similarly it is possible to find some brief reflections about meaning, role and value of Jupiter (together with an invocation) in another post here.

Here I would like to make just a brief additional reflection. Unlike the Traditional Ellenist tradition (which shows a sort of hierarchy among the divine forces), in the Traditional Roman Spirituality this hierarchy is rather attenuated. In practice, no divine forces prevail over other divine forces: there is no Olympus with a monarchist organization and structure.

In the Traditional Roman Spirituality these divine forces and energies are specific expressions with specific meanings, values, roles: they are like tiles in a huge and complex Sacred Mosaic where each tile has his/her own importance, role, function, value.

The Jupiter's/Juno's Supremacy does not result by the fact to be at the top of a hierarchy of divine forces, but by representing the idea of Supremacy in sacred terms. They have a Supremacy because they are Supremacy. They have Authority because they are Authority.

This is the reason why another crucial symbol of Jupiter/Juno is the mountain, in particular the top of the mountain.

I think it is important to have these principles in mind also to overcome the profane idea of "God/Goddess of..."

Settembre - Giove

About Divination

Divination is a practice that has played a focal and relevant role in the Roman culture, society and spirituality. It is important not to forget that Rome, both as a city and as a sacred entity, was founded according to precise divination rites and practices.

Divination is now considered something charlatan: the desecration of this discipline has led this practice to a merely profane sphere: in its modern and profane form is actually charlatan.

The Ancient Divination actually consisted of a complex discipline and Science that accompanied the Roman civilization, in all its aspects.

I think it may be helpful to understand, even if just briefly, the sense of the Ancient Divination as practical and precise discipline. This may also help to understand his role of support for many rituals and many activities that characterize the Traditional Roman spirituality also in the present.

The first thing to have in mind is that the Divination is connected directly to the idea of Sacred Time. The object of the Divination therefore is not to guess the future of a person. The purpose of divination, according to the traditional perspective, is to understand whether a specific action can be accomplished at a particular time (and with what result), considered a time suitable for the conduction of that action.

Hence the importance of Divination as oracular power in its public dimension, but also in the private, firstly because it was a critical  component in the decision-making process related to Sacred Time defined as time frame "full" of the Divine Energy.

Divinatio derives from the word Divinare: it does not mean simply "predict", but "finding out what is pertaining to a God or a Goddess "

Gods and Goddesses are in fact inside the reality, inside the nature: they are not elsewhere, in a place separate from the world. Among the Divine World and Nature there is a link. All Nature, of which mankind is an integral part, is permeated by this spirituality. For this reason, everything that happens in the macro (Universe, Nature, World) and micro (men and women, society) dimension communicate using a single universal language of signs and symbols through which the Divine dimension is in relation to the World. Any phenomenon is not just a manifestation of mere physical events: any phnomenon is also a spiritual mode of being of the Nature, the expression of acting of the Divine in the Nature (for example in the contraction and expansion phases, expiration and inspiration).
For this reason a real augur, having this knwoledge and being an intermediary between these dimensions of the Being, has the ability to properly disclose these presences also to reconcile humanity with the divine forces to achieve Pax Deorum/Dearum.
The augur therefore must know the rhythms of life, the divine characteristics of nature, in order to correctly divining on the basis of this peculiar form of (pre-scientific) knowledge both in the reality and in the oneiric sphere (drams considered as  "ritual spaces ").
Divination is expressed in various dimensions: in the field of decisions, in the identification of concordia ordinum, in the creation of carmina, in astrology, in the sacred geometry, etc ...

Divination and Science of Decisions
Divination (in its application to the "Science of Decisions") consists of two main elements. One apparently linked to random events (eg drawing of lots). The other is the inability of the individual will  to affect the response. Adding the two elements follows that the decision to be taken is completely included to the Divine dimension - in its most symbolic and deep meaning - evidencing the imponderable feature of the  practice of divination.

In the knowledge system implied by Divination no events are isolated and disconnected to the Sacred Time: in addition the macro and micro dimensions are closely linked. One single divination sign can describe complex events or processes within interconnected harmonic systems. The response offered by Divination is  not based on a principle of cause/effect, but of analogy. The symbols representing the Present may describe some "potentials"  linked to well defined time moments.

Divination tool becomes the representation of the Universe, in his sacred space and time, whose dynamics can be predicted in the practice of divination. Understanding the fate means having the ability to perceive in depth an "in progress event", that already exists with its potential consequences.

An expert in divination, an augur or haruspex,  is not a magician, he/she does not predict the future: he/she has the ability to correctly read and perceive the reality, the Nature. He/she has the ability to observe and recognize the signs, to perceive the connections, to understand what forces are in action at any given time and in a given place. He/she understands the interconnections of the flowing of the Being. Every decision, every action should be done carefully, with awareness, in a state of wakefulness according to the harmony of the forces involved. If you act in harmony, your action will be successful:  if lacking this harmony you will fail. Knowing the mechanisms of the interaction of these forces, it is possible to comply with these divine energies and live in harmony in the Pax Deorum/Dearum. Much of our unhappiness and our diseases in body and spirit, are due to the fact that we do not live  in a state of consciousness and waking, and for this inability to follow the flow of life.
