This day is enterely devoted to the "underground fire" represented by the Great Goddess Maia.
In the past, 24 wicker puppets were made which, in presence of Pontifices, Vestals and the Roman People, were, after and complex ceremony, thrown in the river Tiber.
Today it is important to dedicate this day to our purification and to our family and home purification.

Questo giorno è dedicato al "fuoco sotterraneo" rappresentato dalla grande Dea Maia.
Anticamente venivano realizzati ventiquattro fantocci di vimini dalle fattezze umane che, in presenza dei Pontefici, delle Vestali e di tutto il popolo, venivano gettati, dopo una complessa cerimonia solenne, nel Tevere.
Oggi rimane importante dedicare questa giornata alla purificazione nostra, della nostra famiglia e della nostra casa.

May 9th - 13th: Lemuria
According to the Roman Tradition, defuncts are divided into two main categories: Lares, whose lives were inspired to Virtus and Pietas and whose example ispire present and future generations. They are Ancestors protecting the family and the house: Lares have a small domestic altar (Lararium) usually close to the home-fire. Lares thus remain in their home.
Those not following Virtus and Pieats become shadows (Larvae o Lamures) and they cannot go back home after their death. While Lares are evoked as protectors, Lemures must be kept away. They are imprisoned in the Pluto's Inferi and only in rare occasions (as in this period) they can come back on the surface and come near their homes they look in the night with homesickness and regret (this condition make them very aggressive...)
In the past, villages in the Roman Empire had a well used to allow Lamures escape for these nights of "freedom".
Even if undeserving ancestors, Lemures are however part of the family and during this night the landlord must offer some food to Lemures. Lemures and living people cannot meet each other: so the landlord, at the doorstep and barefoot, purifyng three times his hands with pure water and turning his head, must throw nine times behind his back some black beans, Lemures' food, reciting this formula:
"With this food, I redeem myself and my family"
After that, he must wash his hands again and hit a bronze bell or a shield saying:
"Shadows, go away!"
Now he can see ahead again to verify that Lemures are gone away.
During Lemuria, marriages cannot be celebrated and temples are closed.

Poichè i viventi ed i Lemuri non si possono incontrare, il padrone di casa si reca sulla soglia della casa a piedi nudi, si purifica le mani tre volte con acqua, e voltata la testa lancia dietro le spalle per nove volte dei fagioli neri, di cui si cibano i Lemuri, recitando questa formula:
"Per questo cibo, riscatto me ed i miei".
Dopo aver fatto questo rito, si deve lavare di nuovo le mani e percuotere uno scudo o una campana di bronzo e dire:
"Ombre andatevene"
A questo punto può guardare nuovamente davanti a sè e verificare che le ombre se ne siano andate.
Durante i Lemuria non si devono celebrare i matrimoni e i templi sono chiusi.

According to Roman Tradition, Gods/Goddesses are neither positive nor negative. There are very few cases of absolutely negative or positive divine energies.
One of these few Gods/Goddesses only negative is Robigo: the Rust. This is a kind of rust having not only physical (deseases slowing degerating human, animal and plant body), but also spiritual features (inertia, sloth, venom, envy).
During this day, in a sacred wood, rites are organized to keep Robigo away from our body, our mind, our family and friends, our lives.

Dies Natalis Romae.
Rome has been founded on 21st april 753 b.c. over the Palatine by Romolus with a rite based on the delimitation of the templum with a lituum, auspices' reading and interpretation, offering to Gods and to the Earth, delimitation of the sacred space with a lituum, construction of the pomerium (sacred border) traced on the ground with a plough's furrow, delimitation of the Via Sacra around the pomerium.
Through this rite Rome became not only a physical space, but also a metaphysical space where great energies and forces are concentrated. Rome is thus not only a "place" but also a "meta-place". Thanks to this consecration, or a translation into the Gods' dimension, Rome may be the center of other religions but it will remain the site of the Ancient Gods forever.
Costantinopolis is the only city in the world founded with the same rite.

These days are dedicated to Ceres: The Nourishing Earth, Flavia (Clear, Blonde), Frugifera (She-Giving Fruits)).
During these days it should be eaten only an evening frugal meal (dinner) based on bread, flatbread and simple soups of barley, spelt or other cereals. Do not eat meat or drink wine or other alcoholic drinks.
These dinners should be shared together with other families or friends to celebrate a collective rite of fertility and prosperity.

Queste cene dovrebbero essere consumate insieme ad altre famiglie o con gli amici per celebrare un rito collettivo di prosperità e fertilità.
