Hortus Arvalis: the Jupiter's Flowerbed

The Jutiper's Flowerbed (September is dedicated to this God) is a relevant component of the Hortus Arvalis. This flowerbed includes many corroborating, detoxifying and sedative herbs and plants such as:

• sage
• white henbane (different from the black henbane sacred to Apollo)
• juniper
• balm
• lavender
• chicory
• potentilla
• hyssop
• dandelion
• oleander

It is important to note that the Linden (sacred name Philyra) is a sacred tree to Jupiter.

Hortus Arvalis: l'Aiuola di Giove

L'aiuola di Giove (cui è dedicato il mese di Settembre) è una componente rilevante dell'Hortus Arvalis. Al suo interno sono comprese piante corroboranti, disintossicanti e sedative come ad esempio:

• salvia
• giusquiniano (da distinguersi dal Giusquiniano nero sacro ad Apollo)
• ginepro
• melissa
• lavanda
• cicoria
• cinquefogliepotentilla
• issopo
• tarassaco
• oleandro

Tra gli alberi va segnalata la sacralità a Giove del Tiglio (nome sacro Filira).

September - Jupiter

Similarly it is possible to find some brief reflections about meaning, role and value of Jupiter (together with an invocation) in another post here.

Here I would like to make just a brief additional reflection. Unlike the Traditional Ellenist tradition (which shows a sort of hierarchy among the divine forces), in the Traditional Roman Spirituality this hierarchy is rather attenuated. In practice, no divine forces prevail over other divine forces: there is no Olympus with a monarchist organization and structure. 

In the Traditional Roman Spirituality these divine forces and energies are specific expressions with specific meanings, values, roles: they are like tiles in a huge and complex Sacred Mosaic where each tile has his/her own importance, role, function, value.

The Jupiter's/Juno's Supremacy does not result by the fact to be at the top of a hierarchy of divine forces, but by representing the idea of Supremacy in sacred terms. They have a Supremacy because they are Supremacy. They have Authority because they are Authority.

This is the reason why another crucial symbol of Jupiter/Juno is the mountain, in particular the top of the mountain.

I think it is important to have these principles in mind also to overcome the profane idea of "God/Goddess of..."

Settembre - Giove

Per quanto riguarda delle informazioni in sintesi sul mese di settembre è possibile fare riferimento a questo mio precendente post.

Allo stesso modo alcune brevi riflessioni sul significato di Giove possono essere reperite (insieme ad  un'invocazione) in questo altro mio precedente post.

In questa sede verrei fare solo una riflessione aggiuntiva. A differenza di quanto accade nella religione Tradizionale Ellenista (che presenta una marcata gerarchia fra forze ed energie divine), nella Spiritualità Tradizionale Romana questa gerachia piramidale è decisiamente più sfumata. Non c'è di fatto una forza divina (maschile o femminile che sia) che prevale sulle altre: non c'è un Olimpo con una struttura direi quasi monarchica. Tutte queste forze sono declinazioni specifiche con loro significati, valori, ruoli: sono come dei tasselli di un complesso mosaico in cui ogni singolo tassello presenta un eguale valore ed importanza.

La supremazia di Giove e di Gionone deriva non tanto dal fatto di essere a capo di una piramide di forze divine, ma per il fatto di rappresentare e sacralizzare lo stesso concetto di "supremazia". Insomma hanno questa supremazia perchè sono la Supremazia in termini sacri. Hanno Autorità, perchè sono Autorità. 

Anche per questo un altro importante simbolo di Giove/Gionone è la montagna.

E' bene non dimenticare questa precisazione anche per superare l'idea profana del "Dio/Dea del..."
