The Mirror

The mirror is a frequently represented, used and cited symbol in the Traditional Roman Sprituality, as well as in all the expressions of the Ancient Traditional Spirituality.

When observing the antique mirrors, one can see that they show often peculiar features making them hardly comparable to modern mirrors.

In the past the mirror was never a "profane" tool: it always involves complex implications. 

The act of looking him/herself in a mirror hence is never a "neutral" gesture, but it rather involves complex meanings. 

Today we have lost the memory about all this: not only we are unable to understand the  deep meaning of "the mirror and looking at the mirror", but we assimilate in a totally profane way, also the antique mirrors into an exclusively modern vision completely deprived of any symbolic meaning.

Being a so extremely complex symbol, I can just mention few approximate considerations here.

The mirror is always linked to Dionysus: it is therefore always involved, even as an allusion, in the mystery cults. The mirror is an esoteric symbol of "knowledge" but, at the same time, it is a symbol of illusion, because what one see in the mirror does not exist in reality, since it is only a reflection. The mirror in fact generates "spectres" (speculum-spectrum)

As already mentioned, the mirror is a symbol of knowledge (reflex-reflection) because looking through the mirror a person knows and re-knows. Knowledge thus means bringing the world "inside the mirror", reducing it to a reflex that can be observed. When one looks into the mirror, he/she looks at himself/herself therefore at the world.

Deception and knowledge are hence closely linked (reflex-reflection) in the symbol of the mirror and in the act of mirroring. Moreover through these reflections we also may however know the divine within the world; through the symbol of the mirror, we may know Gods and Goddesses in their appearance. Knowing, even the Divine dimension, means mirroring, observing, revealing. We look at ourselves, we look at the world, we see the Gods and Goddesses: all this means "knowledge." Looking at the image of our physical and material being in the mirror involves observing a reflected imagine of the Divine. This is the deepest meaning of the concept: "men and women are made ​​in the image and likeness of Gods and Goddesses" (a concept also considered in monotheism, but in completely confused, clumsy, misunderstood and profane terms).

The world we know is therefore a product symbolically reflected by a mirror: it is surely illusion and deception, but it is a form of knowledge, in particular, rational knowledge. What may defined it as "Scientific Knowledge."

In this image generated by the mirror, deception and reality, appearance and divinity, are linked together. Reflection illuminates; in the same time it deceives. Ourselves and the world we observe, and we believe to know, anything is an illusion. Reality is beyond the conventional and profane idea of knowledge whose understanding is linked to the the choice of the "correct Via": on the one hand there is the "Via of the Initiates", on the other hand there is the "Via of the vulgar mankind".

Lo Specchio

Lo specchio è un simbolo frequentemente rappresentato ed impiegato (e citato) nella Spiritualità Tradizionale Romana, così come in tutte le forme ed espressioni di Spiritualità Tradizionale Antica. 

Se si osservano inoltre gli specchi che sono stati ritrovati, possiamo notare che presentano sempre delle caratteristiche particolari tali da renderli difficilmente assimilabili agli specchi moderni. 

In effetti lo specchio non è mai uno strumento "profano", ma presenta sempre delle implicazioni complesse: lo stesso atto dello specchiarsi non è mai un gesto "neutrale", ma coinvolge sempre degli aspetti ricchi di senso e di significato. Di tutto questo oggi si è quasi completamente persa la memoria e non solo non riusciamo più a comprendere il "Senso dello specchio e dello specchiarsi", ma in modo totalmente profano, assimiliamo questo "strumento" ad una visione esclusivamente moderna quindi priva di senso simbolico. 

Lo specchio è un simbolo estremamente complesso ed in questa sede posso citare solo alcuni aspetti più evidenti.

Lo specchio è sempre legato a Dioniso ed è quindi sempre presente, anche come allusione, nei culti misterici. Lo specchio è un simbolo esoterico "sapienziale" ma, allo stesso tempo è simbolo dell'illusione perchè ciò che si vede nello specchio non esiste nella realtà, dato che è solo un riflesso. Lo specchio genera infatti "spettri".

Come già detto però lo specchio è simbolo di conoscenza (riflesso-riflessione) perchè guardando attraverso lo specchio la persona si conosce e si ri-conosce. La conoscenza pertanto significa portare il mondo "dentro lo specchio", ridurlo ad un riflesso che può essere osservato. Quando si guarda dentro lo specchio, si guarda sè stessi e si guarda il mondo. 

Inganno e conoscenza sono quindi intimamente legati (riflesso-riflessione) nel simbolo dello specchio e nell'atto di specchiarsi. Poichè inoltre attraverso questi riflessi conosciamo anche il contenuto divino del mondo, per mezzo del simbolo dello specchio conosciamo gli Dei e le Dee che si esprimono nell'apparenza. Conoscere, anche il Divino, significa specchiarsi, osservarsi, manifestarsi. Osserviamo noi stessi, osserviamo il mondo, osserviamo gli Dei e le Dee: e questo significa "conoscere". Osservare nello specchio l'immagine della nostra fisicità e materialità vuol dire approcciarsi al riflesso del Divino. Questo è il senso più profondo del concetto secondo cui "gli uomini e le donne sono fatti ad immagine e somiglianza degli Dei e delle Dee" (un concetto presente anche nel monoteismo, ma completamente confuso, maldestro, frainteso e profano). 

Il mondo che conosciamo è quindi un riflesso prodotto simbolicamente da uno specchio: è sicuramente illusione ed inganno, ma è in qualche modo comunque una forma di conoscenza, in particolare, di conoscenza razionale. Quella che oggi potrebbe essere definita come la "Conoscenza Scientifica". 

In questa immagine generata dallo specchio si confondono inganno e realtà, apparenza e divinità. La riflessione illumina, ma allo stesso tempo inganna. Noi stessi ed il mondo che osserviamo e crediamo di conoscere, siamo sono illusione creata da un gioco di specchi. La realtà sta oltre la conoscenza la cui comprensione si lega alla scelta della "via corretta": da un lato la "Via degli iniziati", dall'altra la "Via dell'umanità volgare".
