Iuno: the Binding and Unbinding Goddess

In my previous post I have mentioned the difference between Juno and other Divine Forces as Vesta or Diana. One of the main characteristics of Juno is to be a force that binds: in this way, she firstly represents the sacralization of the bonds deriving from the marriage, which  is a link. Thus Juno differs from Vesta: the latter is a centripetal force, directing towards the center. Similarly, Juno is the opposite of Diana being a force without constraints - a virgo - without ties: Diana is the Quicksilver.

Being the binding/unbinding Goddess, Juno has complex implications related to the symbolism of knots, rings and necklaces that in Rome, as in all the  traditional societies and cultures, had an important symbolic value. It is important to remind that in the past the idea of "decoration" had a peculiar meaning and value: today "decoration" is just synonym of superficial appearance but in the past these decorations had actually a precise symbolic, functional and instrumental meaning and value to communicate and convey a sense anyhow. And this can be found in architecture as well as in clothing or food.

This is therefore a complex topic about which I will try here to briefly mention some aspects. 

In the Latin the verb iungere (note the link with the word Iuno) means:

• join, tie, tie tightly, join together, forming a union
• marry, join in marriage
•  join with ties of kinship, friendship or tighten an alliance

Marriage is the characteristic and most common bond of the symbology of Juno: it was symbolized as strings with knots. Also a string with knots was used as protection of Juno in the moment of birth.

The bond has a religious, initiation, magic, symbolic, sacred meaning and value. Juno, with the power of binding, detains in particular a magical-religious sovereignty. Sovereignty itself appears as a the result of certain kinds of link. All powers depends on form of bonds and in particular those of Juno are the law, justice, authority, prestige. In the male polarity (Jupiter) we find this same issue highlighted by the bond of the oath.

Juno is a not a simple generating or nurturing Mother Goddess (as Ceres): she is a Matron - in the most Roman meaning of the term - who binds or loosens the constraints in the broadest sense. Juno can lock or unlock, hold or release with positive or negative implications. In short - as tradition tells us - she can do everything. The Authority of Juno is therefore expressed by the fact to be the sacralization of a Divine presence over ambivalent control elements as ties, bonds or nodes which, without this presence, would be out of control, leading then the Universe, Nature, to Chaos. All the forces are unravelled through control points. This takes place in all the dimensions of the Being: in the micro as well as in the macro dimension. The human body - and likewise the spirit in the psychological dimension - is articulated through these points regulated by nodes  that can be opened or closed.

Knots, rings and necklaces are hence symbolic tools of control of these points to control the flowing of energy. I will discuss this topic, and its symbolism, in an another occasion.

Juno puts constraints and can remove these constraints. The links ​​sacred to Juno, as mentioned, may be ambivalent. According to tradition they may be:

a) positive, as in the case of the marriage, bonds of kinship, alliances. They may be constraints that symbolically can defend against disease and negativity, bringing healing

b) negative capable to block, impede the flowing of energy, carrying diseases and negativity

To the action of binding is then related a force that can have a positive, beneficial, protective direction or negative, evil, aggressive direction.

In these aspects in particular it emerges essentially the magical symbology of the ties of Juno. However it is important to remind the most spiritual and initiating (and most difficult to describe) power of binding and loosing of Juno: just think of the fact that life is symbolically represented as a string. The Cosmos itself is described as a large canvas, supported by a large plot woven knots. where all beings are con-nected (cum and nexus). Everything is included in this "fabric" and Juno controls the bonds existing between the wires of this cosmic web. Also bonds, links, knots refer to the idea of initiatory death and rebirth, another complex issue to be discussed in another occasion.

Giunone: la Dea che Lega e che Scioglie

In un mio post precedente ho sollevato la differenza fra Giunone ed altre Forze Divine come Vesta o Diana. Una delle caratteristiche principali di Giunone è di essere una Forza che lega: in questo senso si manifesta immediatamente come sacralizzazione del vincolo del matrimonio che di fatto è una forma di legame. In tal modo Giunone si differenzia da Vesta: quest'ultima è una Forza centripeta, che dirige verso il Centro. Giunone poi è all'opposto di Diana che è una Forza dirompente senza vincoli - una virgo - senza legami: Diana è l'Argento Vivo.

Il fatto di essere la Dea dei Legami pone Giunone in una posizione complessa poichè si connette alla simbologia dei nodi, degli anelli e delle collane che a Roma, come in tutte le società e culture tradizionali, avevano un valore simbolico rilevante. A tale proposito ricordo che anticamente non esisteva un'idea di decorazione fine a sè stessa: qualunque elemento, sia pur esso con un aspetto superficialmente decorativo, aveva in realtà una funzione simbolica strumentale ben precisa tale da comunicare e veicolare comunque un senso.  E ciò avveniva nell'architettura come nell'abbigliamento o nell'alimentazione.

Si tratta pertanto di un argomento complicato che proverò ad accennare in questa sede in modo superficiale. Ciascuno poi è libero di approfondire il tema come meglio crede.

In Latino il verbo iungere  (da cui si nota il nesso con la parola Iuno) significa:

• congiungere, vincolare, legare strettamente, unire insieme
  formare con un'unione
• sposare, congiungere in matrimonio, sposarsi, unirsi in matrimonio
  unire con vincoli di parentela, stringere un'amicizia o un patto di alleanza

Il matrimonio è la forma di legame più caratteristica della simbologia di Giunone: esso era simbolizzato da spaghi con dei nodi. Inoltre si ricorreva ad uno spago con dei nodi come protezione di Giunone nel momento del parto.

Il legame ha una valenza religiosa, iniziatica, magica, simbolica sacrale. Giunone, con il suo potere di legare, rappresenta in particolare una sovranità magica-religiosa. La sovranità stessa si manifesta come un legame. Tutti i poteri si collegano ad una forma di legame ed in particolare quelli di Giunone sono i legami della legge, giustizia, dell'autorità, del prestigio. Nella polarità maschile (Giove) troviamo questo stesso aspetto evidenziato dal legame del giuramento.

Giunone non è una Dea Madre che genera o che nutre, non è come Cerere: è una Matrona - nel senso più Romano del termine - che vincola o che scioglie i vincoli nel senso più ampio possible. Giunone può bloccare o sbloccare, trattenere o liberare in senso positivo o negativo. In breve - come ci tramanda la tradizione - può tutto. L'Autorità di Giunone si esprime quindi nel fatto di essere la sacralizzazione della presenza Divina su elementi di controllo ambivalenti come i legami, i vincoli o i nodi i quali, senza tale presenza, sarebbero fuori controllo, conducendo quindi l'Universo, la Natura, al Caos. Tutte le forze si "snodano" attraverso dei punti di controllo. Ciò avviene in tutte le dimensioni dell'Essere: nella dimensione micro così come nella dimensione macro. Lo stesso corpo umano - e similarmente il suo spirito nella dimensione psichica - si articola attraverso questi punti regolati da nodi, da vincoli, che possono essere aperti o chiusi.

Nodi, anelli e collane sono quindi strumenti simbolici di controllo di questi punti ove viene regolato il fluire dell'energia. Questo argomento, e la sua simbologia, lo tratterò in un altro momento

Giunone pone dei vincoli e può liberare dai vincoli.  I legami sacralizzati da Giunone sono, come detto, ambivalenti. Secondo la tradizione essi possono essere:

a) positivi, come nel caso del legame matrimoniale, delle parentele, delle alleanze. Possono essere vincoli che simbolicamente possono difendere dalle malattie e dalla negatività, portano guarigione

b) negativi che bloccano, impediscono il fluire dell'energia, portano malattie e negatività

All'azione del legare viene quindi attribuita una Forza che può avere tuttavia un verso positivo, benefico, protettivo oppure negativo, malefico, aggressivo.

In questi aspetti emerge in particolare l'aspetto più prettamente magico della simbologia dei legami di Giunone. Tuttavia non bisogna dimenticare aspetti più spirituali ed iniziatici del potere di legare e sciogliere di Giunone: basta pensare al fatto che simbolicamente la vita viene rappresentata come un filo. Lo stesso Cosmo viene descritto come una grande tela, una grande trama intessuta sostenuta da nodi. in cui tutti gli esseri sono col-legati. Tutto è inserito in questo "tessuto" e Giunone controlla i legami che si creano fra i fili di questa trama cosmica. Inoltre vincoli, legami, nodi rimandano all'idea iniziatica di morte e rinascita.

June - Juno

This month is entirely devoted to the sacralization of the universal feminine polarity manifesting  her force both in microcosm and in macrocosm. We call "female polarity" that centripetal, coagulating, generating, creating force permeating everything in opposition to that polarity we call "male polarity" being a centrifugal, dissolving, disgregating force.

 

Each individual has both polarities: the perfect being, the Androgyne Rebis, can show simoultaneously these two forces.

 

For this reason June is therefore a feminine month by definition during which this energy, pertaining both men and women, is celebrated. In a more profane sense, June is essentially dedicated to women. 

June receives his name from the feminine force named Juno in particular a great Goddess representing the sacralization of the feminine being, the Jupiter's feminine polarity with who she shares the simbology of authority, preminence, majesty, heights.

(It is interesting to note the relevant difference between Juno and other feminine forces such as Ceres, Diana or Vesta. I will discuss some more complex aspects related to Juno in a specific post)

Juno represents marriage, fertility, birth and motherhood. Her sacred ministress, the flaminica - the flamen Dialis' wife (Jupiter Minister) every first day of the month, sacrificed to Juno a white heifer to ask protection for women.
Sacred animals for Juno are: goose and crow.

The sacred tree of Juno is the oak.

• Juno Fluonia - sacralization of menstruation
• Juno Domiduca - sacralization of the movement of the young wife to her new house
• Juno Cinxia - sacralization of the opening of the young wife belt after the marriage
• Juno Juga e Iunxia - sacralization of wedding
• Juno Lucina - sacralization of birth

Juno is also the feminine polarization of the Genius. Every man has his own Genius or his spiritual and invisible essence keeping the material part alive. In the same way every woman has her own Juno.
Juno and Genius give to individuals suggestions and advices, force, energy and determine individual attitude. At every birthday men and women celebrate their respective Genius or Juno.

Giugno - Giunone

Questo mese è interamente dedicato alla sacralizzazione della polarità femminile dell'Universo che si manifesta nel macrocosmo e nel microcosmo. Chiamiamo "polarità femminile" quella forza centripeta, coagulante, generativa, creativa presente in tutte le cose in opposizione alla polarità che chiamiamo  "maschile" che è centrifuga, dissolvitrice, disgragatrice. Ogni individuo possiede dentro di sè queste due polarità che sono due espressioni del medesimo processo: l'essere perfetto, il Rebis androgino, è capace di evidenziare contemporaneamente queste due forze.

Per questo motivo Giugno è quindi un mese femminile in cui si celebra questa energia presente anche negli uomini e nelle donne. In senso maggiormente profano Giugno è principalmente dedicato alle donne.

 

Giugno trae il suo nome dalla Juno con riferimento in particolare alla Dea Giunone che rappresenta la sacralizzazione dell'essere femminile, polarità femminile di Giove con cui condivide la simbologia legata all'autorità, alla sommità.

(da notare quanto profondamente Giunone differisca da altre espressioni della forza femminile in particolare Cerere, Vesta e Diana: mi riservo di riflettere su aspetti più profondi della manifestazione Divina e Spirituale di Giunone in uno specifico post)

Giunone rappresenta il matrimonio, la fecondità, il parto e la maternità. La sua sacerdotessa, la flaminica moglie del flamen Dialis (di Giove) ogni primo giorno del mese sacrificava una giovenca bianca per invocare la protezione su tutte le donne.
Animali sacri a Giunone sono: l'oca e la cornacchia.

L'albero sacro di Giunone è la quercia

• Juno Lucina - sacralizzazione del parto

Giunone (Juno) è il femminile di Genius. Ogni uomo ha il suo Genius ovvero il suo doppio spirituale ed invisibile che tiene in vita la parte materiale. Allo stesso modo, ogni donna ha la sua Juno.
Juno e Genius consigliano, determinano il carattere, danno forza. Ad ogni compleanno gli uomini e le donne ricordano e festeggiano il rispettivo Genius o Juno.
