Ut porro firmissimum hoc adferri videtur cur deos esse credamus, quod nulla gens tam fera, nemo omnium tam sit inmanis, cuius mentem non imbuerit deorum opinio (...); omnes tamen esse vim et naturam divinam arbitrantur, nec vero id conlocutio hominum aut consessus effecit, non institutis opinio est confirmata, non legibus; omni autem in re consensio omnium gentium lex naturae putanda est (Cicero).

Certamente questo mi sembra l'argomento più sicuro per indurci a credere che gli dèi esistono, che non esiste gente tanto selvaggia, non esiste nessun uomo tanto crudele, nella cui mente non si sia infiltrata l'idea della divinità (...); tutti però credono che esista una potenza e una natura divina, e indubbiamente non sono i discorsi o le adunanze degli uomini a diffondere questa idea, né è una credenza convalidata da istituzioni e da leggi; d'altra parte, in ogni cosa il consenso di tutti i popoli deve essere ritenuto una legge di natura.

Furthermore, as this seems to be advanced as the surest basis for our belief in the existence of Gods, that there is no race so uncivilized, no one in the world, we are told, so barbarous that his mind has no inkling of a belief in gods: (...); nevertheless all men think that a divine power and divine nature exist, and that is not the result of human conference or convention, it is not belief established by regulation or by statute, but in every inquiry the unanimity of the races of the world must be regarded as a law of nature.
